Miss Tia's cherry bushes

Holy Makeral!! Look at all the beautiful perfect cherries! I'm impressed. And what is a Cherry bush? I want one! Cherries are so expensive, you'd think they were made of gold from what the store is charging.

I would be your bestest neighbor Tia if I were allowed to pick some of those cherries. I would make jam!

thus far i've harvested about 14 cups of cherries and i probably have about 6 cups to go....

these are smaller than regular cherries....when you go to slice them, they sort of fall a part....so they are good to eat as is, which i've done and then i've made cherry juice with the rest....i mashed 'em with a wooden potato masher, strained them into a sieve, then with some i mixed it into lemonade (YUM!!!) and the rest i froze in ice cube trays....i can then use a cherry juice cube when i wanna give a pick up to lemonade, other juices, or even mix it into brownies or cakes!!!

Nanking bush cherries. I think that's what she has there, although I planted just one in my previous home garden...thinking it would cross polinate with my bing cherry tree...never did. The bings did fine. Yum!

Looking at yours, I want to try it again!

Do they taste like the tree cherries?

Kathi

i love cherries. summertime is my favorite season partly because of all the lovely fruit we can eat. cherries are on sale this week at our grocery store for $1.57 a pound. I will be buying a few pounds this week for sure.

The color reminds me of one of the kinds of cherries we had growing up. They were a tree cherry, and we referred to them as pie cherries because that is what they were good for at our place. They were tart, and had a yellow interior with an almost fluorescent skin. I loved those, and am going to be looking for places to pick them this year.
Those pictures bring back so many memories. Thanks for posting them.

When did you plant those bushes?
(How old are they?)
I don't know why we don't have those down here? I'm going to have to look those up. I'm sure I can find them on the internet.

i planted these 4 years ago.....last year i had a crop of TWO WHOLE CHERRIES! HAH! this year has more than made up for it!!!

but kathi is right....nanking bush cherries....you have to plant AT LEAST TWO for them to pollinate.....

i have 3.....they get about 6 hours of sun a day....they grow about 10 feet tall and really don't bush out....mostly a tall main branch (trunk if you will) that's about 2 inches around and then 1-2' branches off the trunk, as you can see in the one pix.....one of them is leaning right now as it's weighed down with cherries that i gotta go pick today!!!

the bushes flower in the spring---very pretty!!! then you get the wee little white cherries and they turn green....then they turn red!!! :)

just keep in mind they are smaller than store cherries....you can eat 'em as they are or make juice....if you try to pit them they fall apart....they are VERY juicy also!!

Tia!!! Cherry juice is the elixer of the gods! Supposed to be one of the best things you can drink! Those cherries are amazing. I would love them except once when we had a cherry tree I wanted to die after we picked them and i stood at the sink for 24 hrs pitting them. HATED that part. I finally started bagging them up in freezer bags for freidns, they can pit them right? I was so over it. I didnt have a pitter and gawd, how I needed one. I love cherries too. Yours are fab.
Hope you are feeling less dizzy today and much better . xo
OK, we are returning our boxes to Comacst cable today. We are not waiting until July 7th for service! Thats exactly 15 days from the time it went out. Good-bye Comcast shitty service. We are getting Direct TV, have heard all sorts of great things about them. We have to keep internet with Comcast, they have you by the kohonas with that. But cable will be dish now. DishTV sucks, Direct TV is the best. Thats the word. We checked into it. Comcast sucks. You should see the emails I have exchanged with the head customer service guy out of Philly! It's insane. I said some pretty silly, crazy sh** to him. I told him to call Kevin Costner & james Cameron after they get the mess in the gulf cleaned up maybe they can give Comcast a hand? It went back & forth like this for an entire day. Its all lies & BS they say to you. OFF with their heads! Out with their boxes!! A**holes! DD, I totally sympathize(sp) with you about the damn cable/internet company! They suck, and they can because you HAVE to use them! Its communism! x0x0
