Ok, so I work at a plumbing company. I know for a fact, and anybody that has ever doen any plumbing knows too...that there are many, many shut-offs in place in a home for the water, just so there is not a catastrophe and the water can be shut off at many different places, depending on where it's needed. So, this big ass oil rig & oil line had but ONE shut off? And that failed? One? You kiddin' me??? ONE??? One fucking shut-off (sorry) but I am so pissed off about this. They are just stupid and dont have any odea about what to do. Stuff it with mud & old golf balls, thats very scientific and will work! NOT!!! They should have had some engineers in place when this was built that would have made sure to include enough emergency shut-offs that this would not have happened. Dumbasses. Did Obama let this happen to increase the employment in the US? Cuz anybody that needs a job right now with any qualifications could prob get a job down there right now. I heard he didnt go to the tomb of the unknown & lay a wreath this Memoerial Day holiday in remembrance of the lost soldiers. So, pi** on him. Is he the only president to NOT do that? Instead he chose to go off on vaca. Really? Effer. I say lets all throw in for his airfare outta this country. He doesnt seem to care about it here or the people. I am very conspiracy theory minded and I dont put anything past the gov't anymore. And YES, when all this is cleaned up they will just pass the bill onto all of us and gas will be $6 a gallon again. The way I understood it, was, they had safety features but, skipped them to save money. They gambled and we lost.
They don't want to shut it off!! The greedy bastards want to find a way to capture it!! This is an outrage....plain and damn simple.
9000 days (24 yrs) for the poisoning effects of this disaster to reslove itself IF they capped it today. This number doesn't take in to consideration how far the currents will take it or the upcoming hurricane season that is predicted to be the worst in 10 yrs. Unfortunately, as the worlds $$$$$ resouces dry up so goes any hope of ever resolving this mess.

Hold up there...This is not President Obama's fault. I agree he is not perfect, but look at the stinking messes his predecessors left him to deal with. One of them being the MMS -Mineral Management Service- which was put in place in the 1980's to oversee offshore drilling among other thing.Cheney saw to it that the oil industry basically ran the place..and still did until this disaster. Now heads are rolling, shit is hitting the fan, and the whole agency is being reorganized and reformed.
Bp decided a remote shut off valve was too expensive and not needed.. and MMS let them get away with it.
This is a coporate greedhead and corrupt fucker problem..not a White House screw up ....
BTW..President Obama delivered a Memorial Day adress at the Abraham Lincoln Cemetary in Illionois, and honored our veterans there. The Vp was at Arlington.
I know the battery for the emergency system was dead too and the guy that had that as his job just didnt do it, it again, saved them money. Just didnt do the job for some reason. A dead damn battery. gawd...if my battery goes dead in my TV remote go dead I change it asap and thats just a TV remote. This is just a bunch of idiots that dont have a clue! Holy hell!!! August???? Not till August they are saying. Wow!!! & a hurricane will certainly blow it all over & into the shore & water supply inland. Disaster.

Too right Rox!! I am a native Texan, and they are already forecasting that a hurricane could spread the spill here, and all over the rest of the Gulf coast and possibly up the Atlantic as well. I am super angry, freaked out, and hope those BP fuckers have to pay trillions for the cleanup and in recompennse for the lives they have ruined. Then I hope they get life terms in prison. A prison in Louisiana.......see how they like being fucked over like they did to us.
I drove for three hours (6 hrs. roundtrip) Sat. to get my son to the most southern tip of La. to go offshore to live on one of the flotels for a month (1 month off-1 week in)and work on the cleanup. The last I heard is the intention to START drilling 2 relief wells in AUGUST!!!! It is now leaking a hell of a lot more than they ever thought. One crew already came back in because of illness. They are using chemicals that they have no idea what the future affects will be. The REALLY bad part (other than the obvious leak) is that this is the only work in that area. When I brought Micah in, there men, women, very young, very old---and everything in between. It was really sad. Everyone trying to make a living the best way they can. I hope they can do what they are there for. At any rate, it will be a long time before they can make even a dent in the spill.
Something I found very interesting, there are (at least) 2 underwater plumes of oil floating around. Oil is supposed to float to the survice, but these things are not. I don't understand why. They found 2 but there may be more. Everything is getting real confusing.
All the clean up companies are footing the bill right now and are supposed to be paid by BP and the rig owners. I haven't heard that BP has covered any of this (other than the people they directly hired) yet. I think the lawyers around here will be making a fortune in the future. There will be so many law suits because of this, they will be lined up in the courthouse halls.
I'm actually finding out a lot about this situation from reading these comments. We get so many bits of info that it is hard to figure who is telling the RIGHT info. A lot of it is conflicting! GO figure!
This is such a tradegy. It is a shameful exploitation of greed to the fullest extent. I am living on the Gulf Coast of Florida (Destin)right now and I am waiting until it comes here. All those wildlife and domestic animals that will die and become sick because of it, is horrible.
The goverment needs to get their asses moving and clean this up and then the companies responsible for this need to be held accountable.

i think those chemicals are keeping the oil under water....they don't want all that oil floating up to be counted by the gub'ment, EPA, etc because the amount of their fine is based on the amount of the leak...
apparently they have started drilling those 2 side wells but it will take several months before they get to where they need to be....

I just got a call from my son. They will be staying out 45 days instead of 30. He said the set up isn't bad. After working 12 hours, you just want to sleep. It will take him a little time to get used to not walking on dry land though!
He left out of Venice--La. not Italy. The only thing they have in comman is water!

Whomever said Obama didn't do this is right, the climate in which BP was allowed to run amok started long before he ran for president. Obama still has to prove himself as far as I am concerned, but he has been left with one hell of an apocalyptic mess.
I didn't make it thru everyone's comments so hopefully someone hasn't said this - but I had heard from a friend that not only did BP deny workers request for face masks / proper safety attire but they also turned down these items as a donation. Many of the workers have been hospitalized already and BP says they have unrelated illnesses - my ass. They don't want pictures in the press demonstrating just how severe this really is. They only just admitted a few days ago that this is a catastrophy.
The whole situation is so upsetting and out of control and it COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED!
What really gets me is that Louisiana has been thru so much already, and now this. God forbid hurricane season is bad in a couple months - I can't even imagine how much worse this could get.

BJ, thanks for that info on what's 'really' going on...there's so much we probably won't ever know, but one thing's for sure, this will be life changing for at least the US, and possibly overseas too. It is, as some said, corporate greed, and it's heartbreaking. Who 'gambles' with something which if it fails (the well), has the potential (now realized) to destroy our country for years and years to come? How much money did they save not having a 'backup' plan? Hmmm...I also read, the powers that be, wanted to burn it off very shortly after the rupture, but the environmentalists said it would be harmful (the fumes) to the environment, you can't make this sh*t up. Saw President Obama at the Abraham Licoln Cemetary on CNN with my own eyeballs. A torrential rain swept the crowd and he told the crowd to seek safety...then Hopefully more vists are on the agenda...the White house needs to start kicking as and pulling pass and get this spill cleaned up!! Bp are liars and corporate criminals, and the government needsto stop trusting them to do the right thing.
