Free plants

Now is the time to get free or sale priced perennials for the garden. If your store is nice, like mine, they'll put a free sign on what they haven't sold. If not, check their dumpsters..I get a lot of plants in the dumpsters in July. I found about a $100 dollars worth of free perennials that look like crap, but, they'll be fine next year. And I found a bunch of these hanging pots called "Bridal Veil" that looked completely dead. I knew they'd perk up with water and they did. I hung a long row them in a weird spot in back of mom's house that's in front of part of my porch. It forms this goofy alleyway where I store Lissa's pool and Summer toys. Son of a gun! They look really nice there.
It's raining today, that will give them a nice rest and I'll bet they take off. I like the wild Morning Glorys that came up on all the pipes back there too.

I watched the fireworks with my dog last night and he liked them. I thought he'd be scared since the fair ground is only two blocks away, but, he enjoyed the whole thing. ~Shakes head~

My husband and I almost went along with the rest of the family to Goldendale for the Demolition Derby, but I didn't feel right about leaving our dogs alone. I know that Mia is scared spitless of the fireworks, and I was worried about how she would react if someone started shooting things off before we could get home. Honestly, last night I went out in the early evening to put the big girls to bed, and she was trying to hide between my legs. There were a few firecrackers, none close by, going off, and she was absolutely freaked. I gave her some benadryl, and she still had to lie down right next to me when I went inside, and moved room-to-room with me when I was up. Poor little girl!
This is such an uncomfortable and sad year, with everyone doing their own thing, and my husband is on his own tangent, and will probably just work on cars or visit his mother. He is oblivious.
Your plants look nice. I don't think anyone here is giving anything away for free, but Bi-Mart does sell bulbs, etc. that are at the end of season, for dirt cheap. If I remember right, they sell them for around 25 cents a package, or so. You kind-of have to check every day, and be there at the right time, because they are usually bought up by people in the store at the right time (like me!) who just happen into it.

You're not lazy. The header is nice, but I always look forward to what you will have next.

I know, most dogs hate them. The neighborhood dogs sounded tortured last night..and there's Niki grinning like it was a party. I guess it was.

I drove in demolition derbys when I was younger. Oh, man. Fun.

Happy 4th of July All!!! This is a good time to thank all the military people and their families for everything they have done for this country to give us this freedom that we sometimes take for granted. Where else can you bitch and complain as much as you want about anything you want and still walk about freely? And thank you Pat for letting us do it on your site!

I hit the jackpot today. I went with youngest (Natalie) with me to water the community garden plots. We ended up there longer then usual because it was hot and all the educational beds needed to be watered badly.

Anyway, someone dropped off a ton of pots, drip pans, garden tools, and decorations..free for the taking!

I picked up a few unusual pots that I do not have, a bird feeder for the winter, and a fish wind sock for the garden plots.
The motherlode was two metal frogs playing instruments. They are a bit rusted but they look really good where I put them. I will take a pic later.
I wait until August/Sept and I can get things for free from alot of the plant places.
That is how I got all my perennial sweet peas.

My old dog(13)was never afraid of fireworks. Last night when the test ones were set off, she became extremely terrified. She bolted up the steps, steps she hasn't been able to climb in 2 yrs., and "hid" in the bathroom, shaking uncontrolably. I was so afraid that when the real show started she would have a heart attack and die.
When the show started, she was a mess, as was I. Believe it or not, I cupped her ears and held them shut really tight against her head and it worked!! The noise was subdued enough to make her calm down, stop shaking and breathe normally! Thank God!! I am not ready to lose this important part of my life yet. The bad news is I will have to do this every Fri. night until Labor Day. Also, I don't know if she can make it down the steps, today. She weighs 90 lbs. and I certainly can't carry her!!

maureen, you might want to get a tranquilizer type pill from the vet for your dog to give about an hour or so before fireworks.....you can get something that'll relax 'em before they start.....

Good idea, I never thought of that, Tia. Niki is terrified of the fly swatter and the microwave ding..lol. So weird.

I give my puppies benadryl, and it makes them settle down and get sleepy, but not even that was enough last night. Lots of loud fireworks on the street behind us. Our son was away until this morning, and they usually sleep with him. We medicated them, and let them sleep with us. I was very worried about little Mia. I have never heard her breathe so rapidly---it shook the whole bed. We will need to talk to the vet about a more effective means of calming for new years's and next 4th.

benadryl isn't something that can help alleviate anxiety....there are prescriptions doggies can get....

Christina said...

Hmmm. . . our vet suggested benadryl, and it does make them sleepy, so calms them somewhat. I have tried a prescription item, but even half a dose made Harley so wobbly on his feet that he couldn't stay upright.
I know dog chemistry is different, but most of the years I've been a nurse, benadryl has been used as a sleeper.

just like peoples though sometimes benadryl doesn't make dogs sleepy.....pan gets 2 benadryl twice a day during bee season and it doesn't make her sleepy at all....i have a friend who benadryl makes all jittery and wired.....

maybe the vet could give harley something that wasn't as strong as whatever that was before....

but my comment was a suggestion for maureen to get something from the vet, especially with her dog's age the vet should prescribe something instead of her just trying benadryl.....i know all vets are different but i know my vet wouldn't suggest benadryl as a calming agent....

miss tia said...

fuck...my comment got eaten!!!

i said that pan gets 2 benadryl a day twice a day for bee season and it doesn't make her sleepy at all....also i have a friend who benadryl makes jumpy and wired....

maybe the vet could prescribe something else than the one thing that made harley woobly?

my comment re: going to the vet though was more directed to maureen because i don't think someone should give a 13 year old dog bendaryl unless the dr. says too.....taking age and health problems into consideration might lead them to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for her doggy....

Miss Tia said...

JFC!!! 3rd comment that got eaten by blogger!! i'll log into my blogger account and see if that helps....

benadryl doesn't make pan tired...she gets 2 twice a day during bee season....for a friend of mine it makes her wired and jumpy....

my comment re: going to the vet for a prescription was more geared to maureen....with a 13 year old dog she shouldn't just be giving them benadryl unless the dr. says too plus there is probably something way better that is more for anxiety and as a calming agent than benadryl....

have you asked your vet for something other than what made harley woobly?

Miss Tia said...

OMG!!! i tried to comment 4 times and it got eaten each fucking time!!! WTF IS GOING ON?????

i aint' rewriting all that, but maureen please take your dog to the vet before just giving 'em benadryl....

Miss Tia said...

WTF??! blogger ate my comment AGAIN! that is 5 fucking times!!!

maureen, don't give your dog benadryl w/o taking 'em to the vet first....i had a way longer comment that but i'll be goddamned if i retype it AGAIN....

Miss Tia said...

i guess i'm a sadist i'll try again...

benadryl doesn't make pan sleepy and she gets 2 twice a day...a friend of mine takes benadryl and gets wired and wide awake...

have you taken harley back to the vet to try another anti-anxiety med??

taking drugs like benadryl for off label purposes, like a sleep aid, i feel, is one of the problems with medicine these days...if you take it for the wrong reason if/when you need it for the right reason---anti-histamine, it might not work on you as your body has developed a tolerance for it....

My dtrs. dog was scared to death of fireworks and thunder. She had the pills, but of course, the thunderstorms would come and go before the meds would work, and she didn't shake...she ran back and forth, back and forth the whole time from the front door to the back, barking her head off. OMG, we used to dread Indp. Day, Memorial day, and heat related storms in the summer w/that thunder (and lightening). My dog started out being afraid of the fireworks, as in if we were outside 'playing' he'd run to the door every time. I just 'ignored' it and kept throwing the tennis ball for him, and he seems to have gotten over it. He can't seem to get over the vacuum cleaner though. He keeps lunging at it and biting, I know he's going to put a hole in the hose, just a matter of time.

Heidi - all your 'goodies' sound neat. I think the rusted frogs would be very 'cool' and I love the idea of them being rusted. Do send DD pics, of all your goodies, I'm dying to see those frogs. I love 'cool' yard ornaments. Have to 'restrain' myself, no flamingos though, LOL.
