It's a missed opportunity for all the other women in his life who'd gladly slap the shit out of him for free. I know the show is called Mad Men, but, I hate the way they seem to have written all the women out of this show. The writers had better have kid hating Betty Draper shit or get off the pot or I'm not watching it any more. Don Draper is too pathetic to be the whole story line. And I am pissed off enough at the world, I could slap the shit out of the entire planet. The only thing I like about Don is that he'd always have cigarettes.

Would you slap Don Draper ?
you bet I would
I would but not with my hand.
I really don't see how they maintain Betty as a central character. She was always there to sort of help us see Don in a different light than at the office and now, what are they going to do, keep contriving phony reasons for the two of them to be in the same room? The show this season will be about peeling him like an onion and then Sally developing into this tortured little creature. I bet Sally becomes a much bigger character than Betty before it's over.
the actress who plays Sally is excellent. I believe Bobby has been played by diffrent child actors and no one picked up on that. Betty is complex woman and typical for the women of that era. As far for her being a Cold uncaring mother looking out for her Own best interest. there were many women like her in the early 1960's . Thats just how they were.
that was fast how she married Henry and who doenst like the mother in law when she told her son how can he stand being in another mans dirt ? this scene came after he called off sex with betty could it be cause its in the Same House in the Same Bed that Betty and Don had sex in ? but jumped on her in the car in the garage.
Don is Don people do a whole lot more freaky things then being slapped in the face in bed. that was tame
Yes but would he share those cigarettes?
I was born in the late seventies and was wondering if mad men is an accurate depiction of the early sixties? what do you guys think?
I'm fascinated with this show. Just can't get enough of it.

Frimmy, he would if I slapped him and I'd have no problem with that.
Tammy, yes, I think it is. Everything was a show, nothing was real. Perfection was everything.
wow interesting DD... and i can't get over how the kids are basically ignored.
Tammy
Accurate description of the 1960's ?

I was born in 1960 and grew up in what you would call upper middle class and it was like that. People smoked all the time and drank cocktails too everyone I knew back then had a corner bar in their homes. I never mixed cocktails for the grown ups like Sally did but I did take them their drinks , The men were in their suits and hair slicked back and short the women were just as made up they had a weekly appointment at the beauty salon I remember seeing my mom get dressed up and it was an ordeal you have no idea how much underclothes they wore and how the woman stuffed themselves into it. i am sure there was much sex going on but it was more seduction and work to get to the "act" itsef since un dresseing and dressing was hard work, The scene where the hooker does not take off her brassiere when shes on top of Don was a inside joke about that. Children were more to be tolerated , seen but not heard. So Betty being cold towards her children was just how it was. why do you think all the kids rebelled in the late 60's and 1970's.
So for me its fun to take a look at that time period. The creators of the show have got time period right.
OMG yes, the post-WW2 post-Kennedy era. It was all about that Jackie kennedy thing. In fact all the Kennedy's were the model for this time & attitudes about looks etc. I watched PT109 on Saturday. Its excellent. It was released just a few months before JFK was shot. He hand picked Cliff Robertson and all proceeds from the rpofits of the film were to go to the family's of the PT109 crew. Thats the deal JFK wanted & he got it. I don't think he was bad guy. I liked him very much and remember the day he was shot. He had just made some enemies in Washington and they had to erase him. It was all about big money. JFK didn't need any of it and so he went after the bums. It cost him his life. This show, in all it's shiny perfect plastic glory is all about that shiny perfect plastic time. The 1960's.

In Betty Draper's defense, children were not important like they are now. Nothing centered around kids and they were supposed to not be heard or seen. This kid oriented society we have now is all new.
It was messed up, but, things are messed up now too. Children control everything.
6:18:00 PM, interesting. I remember that if women didn't look good then, or if they dared to gain weight, they were nothing. They were scorned and ridiculed and men could leave them and not even pay child support. Women were terrified of not looking perfect.
Thanks for the insight guys, really interesting. DD I agree that things weren't perfect then and they sure as hell aren't now.

6:18 here in response to the women having to look perfect. otherwise the men would leave them. its because they were dependent on the man and his income. it was not that long ago women were'nt in the work force as they are now and makeing the money to support themselves and their kids. if I had a upper middle class lifestyle in the 1960's by 1970's my mother was a single mom and we lived for a couple of years in a converted garage apt and various low income places that were falling apart and had rats. And in the early 70's if you said your mom was a single parent you were looked down at and felt pity'ed and then your friends dads would hit on your mom. My mom would laugh in their faces, She worked 16 hour shifts at the hospital and saved enough money to put a down payment on a New house in a brand new houseing developement we were the only family at that time there with a single Mom head of household. not bad she paid off the 30 year mortage and is living happyly with no man to impress or serve. Yes today is very kid centered Maybe it was just me and my siblings but we didnt need a whole lot looking after we sortve raised ourselves as latch key kids and on sesame street and we turned out fine didnt fall into drugs or running around thou we certainly could have if we wanted too. It did teach me to be dependent on my own and not be dependent on someone else that can change from one day to the next.
