No fond memories OPEN POST

I can't believe some kids don't know what an outhouse is...am I that ancient? Guess so. Don't they still have them at parks and places like that? Oh, I hate them. I have memories of them, but, they aren't good. Did you ever use one?

My great-aunt had one. She lived with her neice in the country. It was a strange arrangement. The neice had modernized part of their old home but had left part for my great aunt. There was an old fashioned kitchen with a wood burning stove. She made the best home-made bread in that oven. I loved that kitchen and my great-aunt, but I hated that outhouse!

My grandparents had two, if you can believe that. One was a one seater and one was a two...LOL They eventually turned a small bedroom into a bathroom, but kept the outhouses and made us kids use them in the summertime so we didn't drag the dirt in :)

I use to go to a summer camp that had outhouses. I remember one time someone put a flashlight down beside them and when they stood up, the flash light rolled into the hole. Opps. No he did not try to retreave it. There was a very nice glow to the house til the batteries wore out.

I took a bunch of children to a pumpkin patch a few years ago and they had port-a-potties there. I got off lucky and only one child (about 3.5 years)needed to use the facilities. I took her in, she looked in the hole and asked if that was blue jello down there. Then when I put her on she was so happy to be peeing on the blue jello.

I was at a festival last weekend and the port-a-potties were cleaner than the brick washrooms. The park and rec department only cleaned the washrooms at night, (they were gross, especially since one of them overflowed) but the potty company came every few hours to clean them.

I used to spend lots weekends and holidays in the country with family friends. We only had an outhouse and a pee bucket for night time. Outhouses aren't pleasant so I'd use the fields whenever I could for a pee. Never for a poo, though I would now.
Loved every second in the country.

Since I read about composting humanure, I can't understand why we still do it the old way. In China they put fresh human poo on their crops and have terrible illnesses from it. They seem to find the worst ways of doing things, then cling to them despite terrible results.

My sisters house was built in the late 1800's and the outhouse was attached to the house...it went house...woodshed...outhouse. It was deluxe - it had 3 seats. And even though it was out of commission when she bought the house in the 70's the party line still worked.

When my family moved to my grandparents' old farm next door, there was no indoor plumbing. My dad put in a bathroom, but in the meantime, we used the outhouse.I think it was a two-seater, aways out in back. I remember running out there with a flashlight, in my flannel nightie. I think my mom accompanied us at night.

Oh yes many times and they are still at state and national parks. When I was a kid (3rd grade) I went to girl scout camp and I was so freaked out, I'd never seen one before. Camp was only 2 weeks and I did not poop the whole 1st week till I was almost sick (stupid, yes) Still don't like them but of course if they are only thing available, just don't breath in. Last summer when I hiked Mt Whitney at base camp they had them plus a solar toilet and the out house didnt smell bad but the solar toilet was pitiful.
