Hail Mary

Australia will have it's first saint on October 17th. Sister Mary MacKillop was 29 years old when she was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1871 after exposing a paedophile Irish priest to her superiors. Who were men, by the way. Later she preformed what many thought to be miracles of healing. True or not, she tried to stop the child abuse. She has been absolved and soon we will call her Saint Mary Mackillop. Well, done, Sister, well done.

So they're gonna make a saint out of a woman who got kicked out for exposing pedophiles. Doesn't sound at all like a PR move.

Yeah.. That's about right. The Catholic Church has always been around 150 years behind the times. And that's because it takes at least 2 generations of OLD men to change their minds about anything.

My parents loved the Church more than they loved their kids. What does that tell ya?

She was and is a saint! I saw an hour special on CNN the other day about a new legal suit that actually names the Pope as Bishop Ratzinger with full documentation from The Vatican that he knew about the sexual abuse of over 200 deaf boys by a priest and that he signed off in covering it up by not stripping him of the honor of being a priest, not turning over their internal documents to the legal authorities and just moving him on to another and even more prestigious position in another school & parrish. Makes me sick to think how he looks himself in the mirror.

Holy shit! How long have priests been molesting little boys? I thought it was a recent development (I'm not Catholic so I don't pay much attention). Fuck! If we heard about Boy Scout leaders molesting little boys regularly over the past 150 years while their superiors covered up for them there wouldn't be a Boy Scout left on this continent so WHY do people trust their sons with priests? I know not every priest is a pedophile but I also know that Michael Jackson didn't molest every single kid he met...... but that wouldn't convince me to let him babysit.
Kudos to this woman for exposing pedophiles and doing it as a lowly nun against priests as well as a lowly woman against men (as it would have been 150 years ago).

Bless her heart. She was a true beacon of light and had balls of steel under that habit. Can you imagine going up against the Catholic heirarchy in that time? She is a saint, whether they decide she is one or not.
Pope Ratzinger gives me the heebie-jeebies. I am a Catholic and so I am supposed to look to the Pope for guidance. I can not look up to him. I have tried, and I think there is just something evil about him. I saw Pope John Paul at the Vatican many times, years ago. He was the real deal. This guy is an example of why I love the Catholic church as it was originally intended, but loathe things about the way it is interpreted over generations, here on earth. This is not the way it was intended to be, and there will be a price exacted from those who have done such terrible things in the name of God.
As for the issue of boy scouts and pedophiles, there have been a number of instances in my home town and the Portland area. The Mormon church in Portland just quietly paid the plaintiff in a recent lawsuit. I am telling you, any organization where the heirarchy is made up of men who control women and children is bound to be corrupt.

Just as many pedophiles in Hollywood. Jeffrey Jones for one and Polansky are just the ones that come to mind right now.

In 2005 United Nations peace-keepers and Officials molested African children in Congo. Rape, prostitution and pedophilia. In 2002 they were found guilty of abusing West African refugees.

The issue is one of too much bureaucracy and corruption in public office everywhere.

Child molesters should be hung or shot as a deterrent.

I agree with Christina regarding the Pope. John Paul II was a great example of a Catholic Pope, but already in poor health when the scandal broke. I'm sure the Vatican machine ran it's course and shuffled/protected this cancer in the church. How can the Medici have four Popes in one family?-good to be a Medici and own a bank!.

Glad that St Mary McKillop is getting recognition.

Christina, I agree about John Paul II!!! When he died I felt like I lost my grandfather. Ratzinger is not my Pope, that's for sure. I look at him and I don't trust the guy. I don't feel the peace and joy I felt when I looked at or heard John Paul speak. I cried so much when he died. I remember him and still get a tear in my eyes. Even my husband and his family who are all atheists, were bummed when he left.

My mom is still hanging in there though, still encouraging me to go to church, but I can't. I hate what the Catholic Church has become over the past years. Especially what evil there is within the headquarters. I don't need them to dictate my faith when their own is questionable.

This woman should be an example for everyone. Never be quiet, always stand for what's right.
