Sometimes I'm really glad to have my own blog and this is one of those times. See that dude? His name is Jack DeCoster and he runs the Wright Egg Company. There's something wrong with Wright. Please don't ever call him an Iowa farmer. He's not a farmer and he doesn't speak of any of the values of the people of Iowa. And I'm tickled that his stinking rotten egg industry has been caught red handed passing out Salmonella to people. And he knew about it and he sold those eggs anyway, because that's how he is. Good old Jack was also aware of the animal abuse, illegal workers, sexual harassment charges and unsafe work conditions because that's just some of the shit Jack's company has been charged with. Now this.He has no farm..he has a bunch of ugly bleak industrial buildings where animals and people are treated like crap. Most of us hate those places and we feel sorry for our friends who live downwind of the shit. They smell like hell for miles. And these guys, like Jack, build them and run everyone off their own property. And just how do you sell a place that smells like death and hell? How do you advertise that property? And we feel even worse for the people who either have to go to work for this asshole or drive 80 miles one way to work somewhere decent.
He can go square to...just don't ever call him an Iowa farmer.

Interesting to see the face of a factory "farmer". Anyone who cares to be informed knows how cruel the factory egg-laying business is. It is absolutely cruel, and sad, and dirty, and disgusting.
Someday, maybe, running an operation like that one will be illegal. I mean, even to try to set up.
It's a shame that people can't be trusted to use common sense, and to treat animals in a humane manner.
And this is only one egg-farming operation. Tip of the iceberg.
My girls are treated well. They have clean bedding, roomy nest boxes, plenty of floor space, the big girls have a nice run, the younger set will have a nice run, as soon as we get construction done. They are fed well with good layer feed, treats, greens, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, mealworms, table scraps, etc. And most of them lay daily. That is the best that you can hope for out of a chicken, is to lay daily. No need to leave birds in tiny cages where they can't truly stand and stretch, and never see sunlight or feel grass or dirt on their feet. No need for that approach at all. It sickens and saddens me to think about it.
On a side note. . . Petunia (Tuney) is sitting on four eggs. We candled them last night, and saw moving embryos and good veining. Sadly one of the eggs was very badly cracked, but we got a candle out and sealed it as best we could with candle wax. It may die of bacterial infection, but we will give it every chance. It's exciting that we are on our way to having babies again!!!
That just makes me sick. That's one of the reasons why I'm slowly transitioning to certified organic products, grown statewide, even if they cost a little more.
I am a city mouse now but grew up on a fake farm in Michigan. I say fake because it was just our parents encouraged us to have pets so we had a horse, chickens, dogs and at one time we had a cow or two come through (those were never pets and we knew the difference between food and pets). I remember the chickens best. We would go to the feed mill and get a couple dozen chicks that we would raise in a make shift brooder with a lighbulb, feed and water. Some of them died as chicks becuase they got too close to the bulb or forgot to pull thier head out of the water but it was fun to watch the chicks grow and mature. Most of them had names and all the hens laid beautiful brown eggs.
Not sure why I am compelled to post this memory but as Christina said they were trying to save an egg with candle wax it just brought back a fond memory of my childhood and those chickens that to me were pets.
It makes me sick today to see them caged up and not able to move. Following this Iowa crap I am now getting my eggs from the local farmers market each week in the hopes that they treat thier chickens like we did all those years ago.
Have a great day guys.
When this story broke a while back, I was wondering if that was any where near you but then I forgot and it died down. he just looks like he has the 1st dime he ever made, ya know? "Filthy" Rich old so & so. Is he being prosecuted for anything??? I can't remember if you said that in your post, I read it earlier today.

After the news broke about this, I threw away our eggs. Then I went to the local garden store and bought local eggs. I will do that from now on. My parents did my whole time growing up. Next town over hand a small chicken farm. I like how the yolks are a darker orangey yellow.
It's not just about the chickens though. I love animals too, but, these egg industries do such bad things to the people who live here. Seriously..it's so fucking bad. It took thousand of people getting seriously ill to make anyone notice these bastards nationally.
I don't want to speak for Miss Tia, but FUCK CORPORATE FARMS.
Vicki
It's true, DD. They are soulless entities. If they can get away with it, they consider it okay, no matter how bad things get. If salmonella had not been rampant on that farm, none of this would have come to light.
What's better for the animals is better for us, too. I try to support Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm concept. I can't always manage to buy that way, but I try to whenever I can get to my local farmer's market. I buy from similar farms who care for their animals' lives and quality of life.
Speaking of which, I guess I have to go----Wednesday downtown there is a small farmer's market. I like to buy the beef we eat from Full of Life Farm---a clean, humane business. It does actually taste better, too.
On another side note, something dug into Petunia's tractor pen and stole one of her eggs. Not the cracked one, either. I feel terrible. She was really upset, so we risked breaking her broodiness and transferred her to a darkened nest box in the new coop. Wish us luck.
Well, I guess that's a big no on being a gentleman farmer!!!
We had a bit of excitement today. Someone put a threat on facebook about our high school. There were some racial slurs and stupid stuff.
You know, some people are too stupid to even own a cell phone.
Do they actually think they can get away with this? I've said it before, we are raising a generation (or 2) of kids that can't even think for themselves. I guess my generation has messed this country up big time, but I really dread thinking about the future. I hope the rest of the country is doing better than we are. Sometimes I'm just so embarrassed! And we do have a few intelligent people, but they are so out numbered!!!! We live in a very rural area and we just don't have this kind of shit going on!!
i agree Jane....i'm really scared for the next couple generations....
and this dude is NOT a farmer! i'm from iowa and i know farmers!!!
FUCK CORPORATE FARMS!!!!!
How can anyone (Tia) look at someone and say they are not a farmer because your from a state in the Midwest? He just looks like an old man in a shit load of trouble headed in his direction.
well anontard i can read too and i read about the guy, that's not a farmer....can you read? or is your head really far up your ass???
it puts the laptop in the basket....
...it does this when it's told.
Tia - why do you let people bait you? All the anger can't feel good...or maybe it does.
More importantly why isn't someone asking the kroll why they seek Miss Tia's response as a validation.
what anger? oh that's right you are an expert in everything.....
it puts the laptop in the basket...
Tia...the visual of your fat ass down in a well getting the hose is just perfect today. Thanks for making me smile. Someone could make an entire wardrobe off the skin on your thighs alone.
You're the Silence of the Lambs freak.
Project much? Miss Tia is hardly fat. You are the one that is the freak!
wow, now i'm fat?!?! awesome!! Cuz the dr. told me i'm underweight and have very little fat and i need to GAIN about 20# but no, the anontard says i'm fat, so IT MUST BE TRUE!!!
no ass, YOU live in the well.....YOU put the laptop in the basket....
So well said Christina. Why isn't he in jail?? He has consistently had serious violation levels and mutiple violations each survey. His ass belongs in jail
