Oh, thank the..wait, what?

In an article from USA Today, we are assured, the great pumpkin shortage is over!!! Praise to the gods!! WTF? Did anyone ever hear that we were short of canned pumpkin? Oh, because none of us ever look at this vile, but, rather tasty stuff until the leaves turn red and orange? Uhh huu. They have "testimony" too, in this genius article.."I was a little panicked," Jamie Lothridge, an avid baker..(AVID, I tell you!). They say cans of the orange goodness were going on eBay for 6$ to $7 dollars. Damn, I have an antiqued dusty fortune in my pantry. Too late now. My only hope is to get a job writing articles about strange seasonal veggie famines for USA Today. Please, please, where do I apply? Acorn squash may be next! It makes you shake in your Autumnal boots, doesn't it?

I'll try to cope without the pumpkin supplies we've taken for granted.

I have to say I love it though. Just last week I used one can to make a pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin soup. I'm not really seeing the emergency.

I kept hearing about this so-called shortage last year but every time I walked into my neighborhood market there were cases of the stuff in aisle displays. And what I mean by displays - when they put stacked boxes to the side of the aisle so carts can't pass one another. SO frigging irritating.

I noticed to but I just thought that the store had nit stocked any. I needed to make cheesecake also.

I keep hearing that bananas are going to go extinct in a few years. I also heard that chocolate is endangered. It's all because of crops being destroyed. I wouldn't really miss bananas or pumpkins, but it would be terrible to have no more chocolate.

I always steam, peel, mash and freeze the cute carved jack-o-lanterns the day after halloween every year. Seems like free pumpkin!

I saw on discovery a few years ago that a large percentage of our bee populations in the last few years are down significantly. If that trend continues not only honey, but anything requiring pollination to bear fruit is threatened.

LOL, you're getting your groove back, DD.
My mom still cooks down all the good pumpkins she can find to make pumpkin puree to freeze for use throughout the year. I swear, all the stuff she does makes me too tired to do anything, myself.
I have heard of the honeybee problem, though. It is some kind of a breakdown in the community of the hive (community collapse?), and is a serious problem. Between that, and the Africanized colonies moving steadily Northward, we are in for trouble.
Not only that, but huge colonies of bats are dying off from a fungus that grows on their muzzles causing a white-snouted appearance. It disrupts their life-rhythm and causes them to use up their energy stores much too quickly, and starve. With all the insects they consume, it could get real ugly trying to go outside if we lose too many.
On a more positive note, we had a little fuzzy-butted baby today, and the other one is showing some desire to hatch, as well. Mama is very protective, and is very quietly and sweetly clucking to her baby, who is cheep-cheeping back to her. Bliss.

Do like the new Blue background.

Don't like pumpkin. Give me an apple pie any day.

Frimmy that sounds delicious. I tear through pastries and chocolate without reservation.

No doubt that the life expectancy of any dessert is directly proportional to my hand's positive carry over volume. Pumpkin or fresh pecan pie with ice cream and Nutella (of course). Done.

Frimmy, I have to read more on the bee thing. I noticed every spring when my citrus trees bloom I have more and more dead bees on the ground. WTF is going on?

The pumpkins here in Indiana did not flourish this year and are small and not as plentiful. A pumpkin shortage maybe could have happened. Maybe the dry here was balanced out by more rian elsewhere? We got all our rain by June & none since. So, thats peak pumpkin growing time. The pumpkin farm by me has hardly any this year so I am guessing the prices will be very high.

Is there a pinenut shortage this year? I like to make and freeze pesto in the fall and have been making it with walnuts cause pinenuts around here are $7 a package--3 oz or so. By the way, it's pretty good with walnuts!
