Papa says it won't hurt us!

This ad appeared in Harpers in 1904. Those Victorians..always worried about the kiddies. ~shakes head~

Has anybody been watching HBO's Boardwalk Empire? It's set in Atlantic City in 1920. There was this one scene where a character stopped to look through the window of a store selling baby incubators - literally, there were premature babies being tended by nurses right in the shop window. The first question one asks is, who the fuck would be strolling down the boardwalk in Atlantic City and suddenly decide to buy an incubator? The second question is, how much more fucked up were people's minds in 1920 than they are now? They were all outraged about liquor but using premature babies as advertising come-ons...perfectly fine. The show is very detailed so I'm assuming this stuff is based on fact.

right now we're having a contest with vintage ads with medical claims in 'em so you'll see 'contest entry' in the subject title, that's what that is for....

Okay I watched another episode and apparently the point of the incubator place is to make people feel bad for the little preemies so they'll cough up donations. Still creepy.

I like the olden-day ads that brag about using cocaine in their products. I think there was a toothpaste company that did that. Yum, cocaine toothpaste! (Put it on your teeth AND up your nose!)
