Yoga aint Christian enough

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Southern Baptist leader who is calling for Christians to avoid yoga and its spiritual attachments is getting plenty of pushback from enthusiasts who defend the ancient practice.

Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler says the stretching and meditative discipline derived from Eastern religions is not a Christian pathway to God.

Mohler said he objects to "the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine."

"That's just not Christianity," Mohler told The Associated Press.

"I'm really surprised by the depth of the commitment to yoga found on the part of many who identify as Christians," Mohler said.

Cripes. This is where the leaders of organized religion totally lose me. I mean, usually I admire the racket they have going, but, christ on a crutch, yoga? What the fuck does he care about yoga and how people find god as long as they line his coffers? Is he worried about someone spending intended tithes on yoga matts? Preacher needs a grip. Fucking Babtists are nuttier than fruitcakes.

I was raised in Kentucky..as a Southern Baptist..and shit like this is one of the many reason I now consider myself atheist. Seriously, when I was about 15 I had gotten my belly button pierced and I went to show it off to my grandma and she told me I was going to hell for it. "Your body is God's creation and you should not deface it" and all that BS. Baptist religion is completely ridiculous. I also love how Christians like to judge and bash people of other religions when by their own beliefs "only God can judge".

I agree with Miss Tia. Yoga is my mental and physical holiday for 20 minutes daily. I have never considered it to be attached to any religious practice or significance. Baptists are full of baloney and sound like the Chinese Communist Govt who banned Falun Gong. Geez

I don't understand the Baptists. I mean, to each their own, but as the old joke goes. . .

Q: Why don't Baptists have sex standing up?
A: They don't want anyone to think they're dancing.

On a more serious note. . .Did you hear about the Baptists who picketed a Marine's funeral? They were horrendous to the family. They accosted the family and were telling them in graphic detail how their son died, (incendiary device) and that they were glad to explain it to family, as he was a sinner by being over there, etc. Truly horrible to do that to a grieving family. It is things like this that erode away at our freedoms, as now the supreme court is looking at the case and trying to determine if freedom of speech is an issue or not.
I don't see the harm in yoga. I practiced it many years ago (as a teen) and it has not changed my belief in God one bit. I think they should just leave it alone.

I am sooo glad I am not the only person to think this to be a nutty. My husband's whole family is Southern Baptist and they drive me up the wall. The women don't wear pants but pile on the make up. They drag out every piece of jewelry they own on Sunday...they like to take pot shots at me for how I raise my kids. I believe in God and my outlook is do unto others as you would have them do unto you. My grandmother in law had the nerve to turn off MTV (Years ago) in MY house when they were over. They were all in the dining room and I was entertaining my side in the living room. I flipped it back on and said, "All do respect, but didn't it say in the bible that they danced and sang in praise of the lord??"

Christina, sounds like something the Westboro Baptist Church does. Maybe DD has posted about this before, if so I forget. WBC pickets the funerals of soldiers with signs saying the solder was going to hell for fighting for the USA. A country they believe is condemned by god for tolerating homosexuality and a score of other things they consider heinous crimes against god. There's a group called the Patriot Guard Riders and one of the things they do is "Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protester or group of protesters" (from their website)

http://www.patriotguard.org/

Westboro Baptist also pickets the funerals of gay people or gay rights supporters saying the same things. Matthew Shepard's funeral, for example, was a heart breaking display of the Phelps family's contempt for everyone but themselves.

This is Fred Phelps, the monster behind the church holding one of the signs with which they picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral.

I am so bored with these fanatic christians. They hate everyone and everything and always run around banning more shit. It's getting old. They should ban themselves from breathing.

Yes, Frimmy. I think that's the one that I am talking about, though I didn't get the details right. They are terrible examples of Christians. It makes me sad just to think about those poor families who have sacrificed so much.

I think I may have heard about the Patriot Guard on this blog...I can't remember. I know I donated to the cause the minute I learned about them because of their efforts to cancel out the efforts of this group of hate mongers.
