The news says a crippling blizzard is headed for the Midwest. I dunno about that, but, it's snowing and blowing out there, it's hard to see. The wind sounds mean. Pretty dang cold too. I weighed my options. I have enough supplies to be comfy for three days. That should do it. Surely we'll be plowed out by then. I went and told my mom I could take her to the store today, if she wanted. She said, no, she had milk. What is it with old people and milk anyway? She has to have two gallons on hand or she panics. There is no way she sits around and drinks all that milk. She must feed it to the cats. So, I said, suit yerself, but, I can drive out of this. I'm not too sure about tomorrow.*
So, I have my throw plugged in, I have leftover soup to warm and I'm pretty cozy. I have batteries in case the lights go out. They're flickering, so they probably will. The gas will stay on. All things considered, it's not a bad way to spend a Tuesday. I'm just so happy that January is over. Finally. Mother Nature is giving us one last slap, but, nothing can equal the evil of January. I think I'll make a Valentine header. Lissa asked me when is the next holiday where she gets presents. Her year is marked in days she gets presents. I told her Valentines Day and she wanted to know what you get? I said, crap with hearts on it and candy. No toys? Yeah, probably some little toy, I dunno. She said that sounded alright, but, thought Easter was the biggie. I said, Ostera and she said, whatever, just give me my basket of stuff. We all want our 'basket of stuff'. But, not until the snow stops and the plow comes through.

we got a couple inches of snow over night and i guess some areas around here got some ice and all the schools were canceled today, even the universities in the area.....it's doing nothing today....we are suppose to get sleet/freezing rain starting tonight and then more snow....
i'd take 2 feet of snow over any amount of ice!!!
i think i'm gonna shovel the snow we got overnight, put down preemptive ice melt, take a bath and work on february's side door decoration! an angry heart that'll say "BEAT IT" :D
stay warm and safe pat!!!
We got a couple inches, but, it's still snowing. The snow shovel broke from the cold and Niki has to hike in it to pee.
Storm missed us. Couple inches of the dreaded lake-effect plus one night of sub-zero and then we're going up to 30. So melty slush freezing back into sheets of ice. Why couldn't my ancestors have settled in Hawaii?
Lake effect sounds awful. Do you have to leave the water running?
We're gonna get hammered by the system storm and then pummeled by lake effect after the storm leaves. I'm with you, DD.. I'm just gonna hunker down with the dogs and wait it out.
I am in northwest Indiana so we get pounded by lake effect from Lake Michigan all winter every winter. Stay warm, everyone!
I hear that lake effect works in your favor in the Summer though.
My pipes have never frozen. The lake actually keeps it warmer if you're right next to it but it makes weird ungodly pockets of snow. It just snows and snows like mad in one spot and then a few miles away there's nothing.
I'm probably beating everyone on amount of snow and it's still snowing. 10-12 inches so far no end till this evening. Everything is closed the city, school, Library. I heard Walmart closed but I don't trust the source. They have called school for tomorrow. My guess is they will be lucky to back before Friday.
let me add some drama.
Paralyzing storm!
My family all live in Michigan...I got out as fast as I could and landed in Southern California. Best move I ever made. Usually great weather and unlike my entire family in Michigan, I still have a job.
The company I work for is based in St. Louis. Just got an email telling the staff there to go home...guess they are in for a big weather problem.
sugar-booger
I'm 50 miles north of Denver and todays high is -13. Friday it was 68. The state is pretty much closed down due to ice.
just got done shoveling the couple inches of snow we got....it was the heavy stuff they call 'heart attack snow' because of how heavy it is....
put down preemptive icy heat on the driveway and it started RAINING....now it's just like drizzling out.....ugh....
anything but ice/sleet!!!!!
we usually get lake effect snow but they haven't given us any such warnings about that yet....
The lights are still on. I'm watching reruns.
We are getting ice here in Old CT. The weather people kept waffling back and forth..1-3 inches..NO 5-9 inches..NO! Icy slushy shit! NO!
It snowed just a tiny bit and I cannot tell what it is doing out right now. So it is probably freezing rain. It is 22 deg F right now at 3pm.
I would rather have the mountains of snow instead of the ice. Yuck!
Hubs shoveled the snow off the porch roof yesterday so at least I do not have to worry about that.
now THEY are calling for up to 1/2" of ice for my area tonight! NOT GOOD!!!! not good at all!!!
The snow is just now beginning to fall here, but it is really windy and the snow is falling horizontally. There will be massive drifting & roads will be blown shut in a matter of hours.
Brrrrrr!
like the new header!!! now i want some of that candy!
Pat - with the knack you have for finding really cool stuff at the dollar store, I bet you could put together one kick-ass Easter basket.
But with the weather you are having in the middle of the country getting to the dollar store may require a sled and some well trained dogs.
Stay warm and safe.
We can only hope Tita. We can only hope.
In chicago here..got my snuggie on and gonna stay in the room with the ratties tonight!
Hey all! Stay Warm and Toasty!!! and safe. bima
Got 6" of new snow overnight ...normal for around here. Must have been bad in south county b/c most of the schools were on a 2 hour delay. The county directly below me ... all the schools were cancelled. Cold and Windy all day. Calling for mix of rain & snow overnight and tomorrow. I can live without the rain. I live in the land of lake effect snow storms, but this isn't one. It's coming straight out of the west and just crappy weather.
Bad here in central Indiana tonight. Still have power. the sleet is really piling up out there and the wind is blowing HARD and strong. My dogs hurry up & pee fast! LOL...I have to say. I loved this post. It was just precious and so sweet. We love you girl!!
this is ME Rox
xoxoxo
BUT sugar-booger(?) you could go back to Michigan and buy a pretty nice house , a big one, newish, and pay about $1.50 for it!!!
Indiana hates me! Winter GO AWAY, thx!
No shit on houses in Michigan. For fun I was looking at real estate and you can get some really cheap places in Flint. But you might find that the copper pipes have been stolen and then there is the issue of living in Flint.
also the weather...the extremes kill you. Hot humid summer, butt cold winters. Constant road construction and mosquitos. Not for me thanks.
sugar-booger
Well we got about 7 inches of snow here in Southern Minnesota on Monday and now we are in a Wind Chill Warning for tonight and Wednesday. It is going to be only 2F tommorrow. I have really had enough of this snow already. We have had like 65 inches of the crap this winter....normally it is close to 50 inches!
Deb
Good luck to all of you. From what I have seen on TV, it is going to be bad. They are saying the ice part was the worse. I know I complain about it being hot one day and ice cold the next, but I guess I'm pretty happy where I am.
I do feel sorry for the dogs that are trained to only do their "business" outside. What does the poor animal do? The cats have it easy.
Miss Tia...you sound so much better since you found out about your carbon monoxide problem. I'm glad it worked out well.
yeah Bayou Jane, i am feeling MUCH better!!!! thanks!!! the dr. said it would take a few weeks for the CM to get all out of system and she was right!!! all the critters are way more active too!!
i can't recommend everyone with a furnace getting a CM detector enough!!
how are YOU doing??? i know you had some upheavals coming up....
and it's been sleeting the past 2 hours!!! UGH!
Sugar Booger- this will be short because Step Brothers just started and I love it...but if you got to cali and managed to sty even in that economy out there and the high expense of living there, then stay! By all means. My friend in OC loves it. She pays almost $3G rent for a small house with just a standing shower!!! Not even a entire tub. But she was from NJ and went to cali, got on illegal drugs and got arrested and involved in tons of bad sh**, then turned her life around, met a great guy, they both make shit tons of money and she loves cali so much. She even got back to getting her college degree now. Shes inspiring. & I think NJ would just depress her now. Michign is ran by the Arabs now anyways. I wouldnt live there either. Whats the deal with all the Arabs in Detroit? Maybe its all the cheap real estate? I mean seriously. maybe it is!!
This Is me Rox.
It is BAD here in Chicago right now. I've never seen it like this and I was around for the big one in 67. The wind is about 60mph and visibility is nil. We're suppose to have thunder and lightning later tonight with 4 inches an hour falling. Time to just hunker down.
rox just texted me and she's in indiana and she said the wind is like a hurricane it's so strong....
we still have sleet here in akron ohio but the temp is starting to drop and the wind is picking up.....i am hoping it switches to snow soon because i do NOT like all these sleet!!!! sleet and ice are bad......
We have had a very mild winter here and I, who always complains that I want more snow, am now thinking of all of you hoping that you are staying safe and warm.
Was hearing strange sounds outside. Fool that I am, I opened my front door... Crunchy sounding moisture falling from the sky. Don't know if it's sleet or freezing rain, but snow doesn't make noise. It's going to be an interesting drive to work in the morning. Hope the electricty doesn't go out.
Rox
Not sure what the draw of certain places are to specific cultures. I remember that Dearborn had a high population of middle eastern people but I never understood why? I mean if you're going to migrate to America why would you settle in Dearborn/Detroit with an entire country at your disposal? Maybe if you have friends/family it makes sense.
OC is nice. I actually live in San Diego so I rarely have anything to complain about weather wise. Oh, I did have to shut all the windows tonight because it finally got chilly enough to do that...but I won't be digging out of a snow drift in the morning or worrying about my pipes freezing.
I love California. Its a high cost of living here compared to say Michigan but the salaries are also higher so it really balances out.
sugar-booger
Thunder snow? I mean, really!! Like Mother Nature had to come up with a whole new climatic torture for this storm?
The dogs tried to get out the doggie door and ran smack into a wall of snow. Dizzy had to sort of screw her little self backwards to get her head out of it.
No clue how much snow we have so far, the wind has it drifted sky high in spots. Furnace punked out, due to snow clogging the air intake pipe outside. Had to shovel it out and then try and lift the damn basement door with a foot of snow on it, so we could get downstairs and reset it. No ice, so I feel we're the lucky ones. Stay warm and safe everyone!
Why are all these people saying, well at least I got gas heat if the electricity goes off.
What do you think makes your furnace kick on and off?
Anon, my furnace has an electric ignition, as long as it's lit the gas heat stays on. I can kick it up and down with no electricity. There's no blower on it, so I'm good.

,,,,,SERIOUSLY? You ever hear of a thermostat and a pilot light? jEBUS, this country is FUCKED....
My circa 1929 home is heated with water anon. RADIATORS. Do some research before you spout your ignornance.
HA HA . spout! (funny word to any one who has ever had to bleed a radiator)
radiator (rā'dē-ā'tər)
A body that emits radiation.
Radiators are commonly designed to transfer heat energy from one place to another, as in an automobile, in which the radiator cools the engine by transferring heat energy from the engine to the air, or in buildings, where radiators transfer heat energy from a furnace to the air and objects in the surrounding room.
The American Heritage® Science Dictionary
such as.... and maps... and such as...anon you are an idiot.

THermostats run with ELECTRICITY, OMG who is the idiot now? The blower is ran by electricity. Unless you have a furnace heated by wood in your basement or perhaps an old old OLD has heater you will not have heat with a gas furnace.
If you have the kind DD says she has, or a radiator then yes, gas is all you need.
I was questioning how many people I had seen on FB talking about this. People with regular old modern central heat gas heaters. Until people started asking them they didn't realize they wouldn't have heat with those kind.

-----god bless you sweetheart, and trust me, you're gonna need it.
love,
sally.
I have a free standing heater, like the old Warm Morning things. Bet no one else has to deal with that shit. But, it does work with no electric.
