Valentimes

We're sitting here doing Valentines, which Lis calls "Valentimes." I knew I'd get stuck with this since it comes on Monday. No one brought me a list of the class names. Of course. I had an idea to use a photo of the class out of the newspaper that's stuck on the fridge. So, I pointed at each kid and asked their name. Lissa tells me and I made her a list. Jesus. There's Marshalla, Maddison..Xandria. WTF? Xandria? Finally, there's one kid named Max and I say, that's a great name. It has three letters. That's a good name for a kid. Everyone should name their kid Max.
*
She surprises me by sitting down and copying all their names in the "to" spot, putting hers in the "from" spot. Her printing is very good and she's fast. When did she get so big? She's doing a really good job. My job is to cut a slit in the Valentime and put a stick of gum in each one. I bought gum with sugar. I wonder if that's against the rules? I have no idea. We're almost done, but, I'm told we forgot Emily H. Emily H. was getting her tonsils taked out when that picture was taked. She can't hear too good. I don't know if it's because of her tonsils or what, but, I am not asking.
*
She just told me thank you for buying her Hannah and Wizard Valentimes. Aww, that's nice. I'm feeling pretty good and we're almost done. I have done my duty. Except she just informed me that she volunteered me to make Valentimes cookies for the entire class. I asked her if we can just buy the cookies, but, she says no. We have to bake them. This is going to be a long weekend.

HAHA! That's a sweet story. She knew you'd bake them. It's nice that her school still lets baked goods come in. So many don't because of allergies and what-not.

I'm not really the baking type of Grandma. I'm going to get the ones that you just shove in the oven and let her ice them. I am tired of this holiday now.

yeah, i'm surprised about the baked goods too....but good for them that they still allow that!!

break apart and ice cookies sound just fine.....

The schools here don't allow any type of homemade food anymore. I guess they're afraid of what some sick fuck might put in it. I'm glad she didn't exclude anyone from her Valentime list. I could never understand parents allowing kids to do that.

You are all now making me wonder if she made this up. I have no one to call. I think I shall make the cookies, put them in a container and let other responsible adults sort it out. I am over it.

Man, she totally scammed me, didn't she?

Well, at least she didn't tell you Sunday night. That was my son's trick.

He has a four letter name but two of the letters are the same (and it's not Todd) does that count as a good name?

Wow, she sure looks grown up in that pic!

Todd is an excellent name. I'm still trying to get an answer about these cookies. All I get is, "Well, people like cookies." I am so fucked.

I think Lissa is adorable, and we still send homemade cookies to school here. I had no idea other schools weren't doing that any more. We still have bake sales and cake walks, too. These things aren't done anywhere else? How sad.

I hope Max isn't Maks...

ARG! Who knew this was so complicated?

I think if you bake the "ready-made" kind, it should be pretty safe. Most schools do not allow home made anymore but ours does.

I know that did not help, DD...

But I had a good laugh from your post.

Bake 'em - you know that someone will eat them... ;-)

And as soon as we get back from the library, I have to help my kids make theirs and buy a book a the store because my eldest kid's teacher wants a book exchange for Valentine and we need to address their buddies and teachers and teacher's aides and assistants and, AAARGHHHH.

What the hell happened to a simple Valentine and a piece of candy?!?!?

Two kids in my grandson's pre school class have peanut allergies. What's up with that shit? In all my years growing up, in both Catholic and public schools, I don't remember even 1 kid ever having a peanut allergy. I think it's this sterile world parents try to build around their kids. I just read a report a lot of it is coming from parents not exposing their kids to different food early enough in life. Parents not feeding kids food until their 8 months to a year old.

Our schools still allow baked goods as well. Her teacher sent a sign up email out and wanted non iced cupcakes (so the kids can do it) cookies, pigs in a blanket, etc.. I volunteered to bring the napkins...lol

Peg,
A acquaintance and I had the same conversation about peanut allergies. I never ever remember anyone having it. We had a girl in class with epilepsy but other than that all were healthy. I remember bringing in a shoebox and we got to decorate it with red and doilies. Then classmates put the valentines in the hole cut in the top.
My oldest has her birthday on the 15th so I would bring in Valentine themed cupcakes or cookies for the class. Sometimes apple juice too. The girls middle school had a cake raffle one year. I made a cranberry coffee cake and a three layer carrot cake with marzipan carrots on top. This was all before I got sick of course. I am glad I was able to do that back then.
I think the roll of cookies are perfect, DD.

We can't have home made stuff at my child care centre. You don't know what the condition of the home that the treats were made in. Yeah you try and tell that to a parent. We are also a nut free building, (we have 4 very allergic children, none in my class this year) so any treats brought in have to have the nut free sticker on them. We generally recomend chips or cheesies just to be safe.

We also tell the parents to just write "to my friend, love ________" It makes the teachers life a whole lot simpler. The children still hand them out to each child, but it goes faster since they don't have to look for each friend by name, just go around the circle.

From the time my daughter could speak, she named everything Max. It was her great-grandfather's name. (Short for Maximilian) He died while I was pregnant with her. She even found his WWII dog-tags and carried them around with her everywhere.
Max is a nice name.
Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Pat,

Thanks for posting about your grandmother adventures with Lis. It often makes me think of my own grandmother that died of cancer in 1983 when I was in high school. She was amazing and I was the first grandkid so somehow that forged a very special bond between us. All these years later I still miss her and think of the fun things she did for and most of all WITH me - some things sound gross now like butter and white sugar on wonder bread but you get the idea. She would also go to my grammer school for stuff and once made homemade ice cream for the entire class - with the freezer you had to hand crank. I see a lot of those little things in you and what you do with Lis...brings back very fond memories and smiles.

Happy Valentines Day to you...you're really the best.

No baked goods here! For exact reasons mentioned: quality of kitchen and or baker, allergies.

Heck I am the same way at work with potlucks, if I haven't seen your kitchen, I won't eat it. EWWW.

Not that your kitchen is bad Pat.

Her hair is shiny and pretty.

Yes one kindergarten, one 3rd grade boys. Doing Valentines this Sunday Morning. yay! (yuck) I thought I was being clever and bought Toy Story fruit snacks. Assuming there would be a envelope along with the packages snacks. Noooooo just a tiny To; and From; on the package. So I got out a box of envelopes and they are to decorate and write the to and from. I really believe the only motivation is that they get to have all the left over fruit snacks when they're done.
they are giving thought to each student which i guess is the point.
The restaurant was full of lovers last night and will continue tonight and Monday. I really hate it when the stupid holiday drags on all week-end.

One on one time is so special for grandparents and grandchildren. When I have my grandson I treasure every minute and try to do something special with him. Time moves so quickly, I don't want to have any regrets when I look back at our time together, like I have about my children.
