Michigan foster kids don't deserve new clothes

Under a new budget proposal from State Sen. Bruce Casswell, children in the state’s foster care system would be allowed to purchase clothing only in used clothing stores.

Casswell, a Republican representing Branch, Hillsdale, Lenawee and St. Joseph counties, made the proposal this week, reports Michigan Public Radio.

His explanation?

“I never had anything new,” Caswell says. “I got all the hand-me-downs. And my dad, he did a lot of shopping at the Salvation Army, and his comment was — and quite frankly it’s true — once you’re out of the store and you walk down the street, nobody knows where you bought your clothes.”

Under his plan, foster children would receive gift cards that could only be used at places like the Salvation Army, Goodwill and other second hand clothing stores.

The plan was knocked by the Michigan League for Human Services. Gilda Jacobs, executive director of the group, had this to say:

“Honestly, I was flabbergasted,” Jacobs says. “I really couldn’t believe this. Because I think, gosh, is this where we’ve gone in this state? I think that there’s the whole issue of dignity. You’re saying to somebody, you don’t deserve to go in and buy a new pair of gym shoes. You know, for a lot of foster kids, they already have so much stacked against them.”

Casswell says the plan will save the state money, though it isn’t clear how much the state spends on clothing for foster children or how much could be saved this way.

Really, Senator? Maybe YOU and all the rest of the useless fucking politicians should wear stinky shoes someone else wore that don't fit, or, you could give up the fat paychecks you collect for sitting on your pompous ass's doing nothing but coming up with shit like this. Fuck you. In the ass. In used underwear.

WTF?!?!?!??!?!?! that's just horrible....

i'm just thinking of some poor kid who's been put in foster care due to neglect and then they have to get used clothes....now there is nothing wrong with used clothes, but seriously, the discretion for clothing should be left to the foster parent and is he really advocating USED UNDERWEAR AND SHOES?!?!?!

FUCK HIM!!!

This pisses me off so much. Like it's not hard enough being a foster child, now we'll dress you from Goodwill? There's nothing wrong with buying some pieces there, but an entire wardrobe that's pre-owned is just fucking sad. Why don't we keep these kids under the fucking staircase while we're at it? I hate this fucker. Is there NOTHING else in the budget that could be cut? Maybe this fucker's salary? I'm so tired of politicians villianizing the poor and helpless. So. Fucking. Tired.

Oh, and you're not even supposed to buy children used shoes for everyday wear. It can fuck their feet up to wear shoes that are broke in by someone else. Once again, I have nothing against Goodwill or the Salvation Army, but I would never shop there exclusively for my child.

Pomegranatetears, I was going to say what you said word for word.

Nice that the gov. has enough money to bail out big-time companies like GM, but not enough to let foster children buy a new pair of shoes.

This story makes me want to open my home to a foster child and protect them from assholes like him and then I remember, I hate children.

Moron. First thing wrong with this fucktards statement is that his Dad did that for him. I cannot stand that excuse "I was raised that way"
THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT! asshat

An item or two it makes sense. For instance my oldest boy is growing so fast his jeans are barely used. His shoes on the other hand aren't fit for a damn thing they're trash and he's flying through those too. I wish I could find suitable shoes second hand cause he needs them about every 4 months. I'm sure there is a foster boy out there somewhere doing the same thing. The last thing that poor child needs to worry about is getting dressed for the day.

"Will I have a family tomorrow? will I have pants to worry about that in? "
Stupid asshat.

We were dressed in hand me downs growing up. I remember one day in fourth or fifth grade going to school dressed in a pair of pants from the garage sale of one of the "rich kids". I remember seeing a shocked look of recognition on her face when she saw me wearing them. But she never said anything. Bless her heart.
