Jail or church..your choice

Authorities say non-violent offenders in Bay Minette now have a new choice: Go to jail, or go to church every Sunday for a year.

Operation Restore Our Community begins next week.

The city judge will let misdemeanor offenders choose to work off their sentences in jail and pay a fine; or go to church every Sunday for a year.

If offenders select church, they will be allowed to pick the place of worship but must check in weekly with the pastor and the police department.

If the one-year church attendance program is completed successfully, the offender's case will be dismissed.

Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland says the program could change the lives of people heading down the wrong path. So far, 56 churches are participating.

Here we go. People who think their way is the only way and they can save someone. There is no way this is legal, ethical or effective. It's Alabama. I'm sure the good citizens of the bay would like to put anyone who doesn't go to church in jail and that's where this is heading. It makes all the citizens of Alabama look like morons. This is so ignorant I have no more words except..give me jail.

Now hold on! I could find me some nice married mens every Sunday while listen to the message of the lawd. I's arrested for solicitation.

How's my accent? (lazy talk) couldn't resist being it's Alabama.

There can be no WAY this is legal.

Around here most of the criminal elements spend all day at church on Sundays. It's their CONTACT time. I would imagine some of the best deals are made then. Then they spend the rest of the week shooting at each other!

Just being pragmatic here, but I would choose church. Church is a couple of hours on Sunday. Jail is every minute of every hour of every day of every week....

Is there a church of old tyme smokey blues? I'd go there. Otherwise jail because i don't see much difference emotionally and in jail someone does your laundry.

yeah just think of all the radical, challenging and confronting things you could get up to once a week at church... could be fun ;-)
