There's no such thing

There is no such breed as "Little Yappie Dog." All dogs descended from wolves, they are dogs. People who are dumb enough to use the term 'little yappie dog' to a dog owner and dog lover are no different, in my book, than people who use racist terms. And they say it with such disdain, like they would never be wimpy enough to give a home to a small dog. Nope. They would get a big huge REAL dog, because apparently, their intelligence is measured in the bones and flesh of an animal.

And what's worse is, they say the hateful term in front of children who take it as gospel, repeat it and start treating my small dog in ways that he never deserved. Then I have to explain that though Niki only weighs six pounds, and yes, he's a tiny dog, he would give his six pound life for that child. He wakes her up every morning for school before the alarm goes off, he sits and waits patiently for every crumb to fall and he worships the ground she walks on. And if an intruder broke in? He would never hide and say to himself, wait, I only weigh six pounds. He would throw himself in harms way, growling and snarling, to protect his people.

So maybe, the people who only like big dogs could think about that next time they want to prove how superior they are by calling my dog 'a little yappie dog'. You just make yourself look ignorant and hurt a good dog's feelings for no reason.

(I could have added, your nice BIG dog lives with someone else now, because no one took care of her, but, I'm not that mean. I did say, we are not going to the homecoming parade today because you need to think about the way you've been treating MY dog.)

There are too many ignorant uninformed people in the world. I'm not a fan of small dogs, but there are lots of really cool little dogs out there. Thought you might like this video. Are you familiar with Schutzhund training? Normally it's done with large breed dogs... but not always.

My little 5 pound pom bella would do the same for us. Shs snugles, begs for scraps, gives tons of kisses, barks furiously when anyone comes near us or on our property, and even does funny things to impress us when our day isnt the best. And the best thing about her is that she can sleep in my bed with the cat, who is bigger then she is, without crowding the husband and i out..lol i love my baby girl and she is a valued member of our family

Anyway..If my dog was yappy, I wouldn't have him. Yappie is not a breed.

I volunteer at a no kill shelter, where I primarily rehabilitate and re-socialize Pit Bulls. However, I treat each and every dog there, no matter their breed or personality, with equal respect, love and care. Your post made me love you more. Thanks for that, because today has been sucking big time for me.

Dog trainers have a name for yappy little dogs: "Small dog syndrome." And the problem begins when people train and socialize small dogs differently than they do large ones. Basically, small dog syndrome is a result of how owners treat their dogs and the dogs respond by thinking they're the leader of the pack. I'm sorry someone would insult your dog that way. I have no doubt that Nikki knows you're his pack leader. I have a small-ish dog (a Cavalier) and she thinks she's 100% wolf. I hope Lissa gets it together and realizes that someone is giving her some bad information.

I prefer big dogs myself, but at the end of the day the dog that needs taken care of or wins my heart is the one coming with me.

Anon, poms are excellent alarm dogs.
Tonya I HATE people who don't let the dog be a dog. Put the damn animal on the ground and out of that stupid purse, you do the dog no favors by carrying it around like that.

I think people who don't take care of their own dogs don't have any right to badmouth anyone's pet... yapper or not. And I don't blame you for not going to their event.

I had a chihuahua when I was growing up. Her name was Mickey. She lived for 15 years and I still miss her. She was a person to me. She would chew the ankles off of anyone who got near the family. She liked to ride on my neck when we were in the car and would let us know the minute someone was on the sidewalk to our house. She had a will and a personality all her own, and in the case of dogs, "size does not matter". They are all full of love and, like people, you have to take them for who they are.
