Lissa painting a gourd

I found an old gourd I forgot I was drying from last Halloween. (You never know what you'll find in here.) We cleaned it up and this morning Lissa painted grandma a work of art. One of a kind. I will varnish it and proudly hang it in my tree. Oh, she says it's an all season gourd because she used all the colors. So, I don't have to worry about that. Whew.

I love the colors she used together. That aqua and red are really nice together. It is going to look great in your garden! And I love the sassy expression on her face in the first pic. She is too cute.

Love Lissa's gourd, it will look great hanging in the garden! Tell her some people pay a lot of money for painted gourds.

Very nice!

I didn't know they were so easy to cut. I just used a steak knife to make the hole and perch.

Over 20 years ago I bought a gourd painted to look like Santa. It was about that size & I remember paying at least $15 for it. Lissa better get working on those gourds! Tell her to get busy.

She's the busiest person I know.

OMG, we would paint Eddie a grinch gourd, but, I have none left. If you find the gourd I will gladly do it. Or I will set one aside for him in October.

CJ, I have a "santa" gourd! Matt's grandmother made one and passed it on to us. It's with us every winter and we love it.

I loved the way Lissa picked the colors and made them work so beautifully. And, busy for a kid, is good ;-).

if you'll have one to set aside in october that would work, if not, let me know and i can pick one up!! no timeline at all!!! i dunno how long they gotta dry out before you paint them either....it is grinch time all year round at eddie's place!!! well....let's just say as he's rebuilding his grinch collection, it's getting grinchier in there....

I have a gourd and a grinch story.
When my son was about 4, we were at a little store up in the appalachians and my son backed into a table and knocked a gourd off. It of course broke and the grinch charged me $10 for it. It didn't have a price on it and I'm sure he upped the price when he knew he had me. This was about 25 yrs. ago and I still have that plain gourd. I glued it back together. I ought to paint a spider's web on the cracks for Halloween.

Tia,
Did you ever go to the local or online fabric store for grinch fabric? You could make him a fleece blanket or pjs. I think his obsession is odd, especially for a grown man, but whatever.

Miss Tia said...

our local craft stores don't carry the grinch fabric, but i have gotten some online and i have grinch pillow patterned fabric to make him 2 pillows---i am glad i got that 2 years ago and procrastinated with that project and i also a couple years ago found a grinch apron patterned fabric to make, again i'm glad i procrastinated or those would be gone.....i've seen grinch fabric on ebay but it's like those fat quarters and sort of expensive and i'm unsure what i could do with it....if i could get some cheap i'd make something, probably a blanket (i have no sewing machine but i can hand sew basic stuff).....if i found grinch fleece i'd make a blanket....i've never seen grinch fleece....

eddie has collected grinches ever since i've known him....some people collect owls, or other types of figurines or collectibles but he collects grinches....he identifies he says with the grinch and his heart being 3 sizes too small....though anyone who knows eddie knows his heart is NOT 3 sizes too small....

i know michaels had grinch items last year: sun catcher kit, plaster ornament kit, stickers, etc and i got them all for eddie for xmas and his birthday but they were lost in the fire....walmart has had grinch stuff too the past few years....i hope they have it again this year....

I don't think it's odd. I collect the weirdest stuff. I like egg beaters. I like old pottery, the cheap USA stuff. Plastic dolls. Hair receivers. Old pencils with ads on them. I'm a weirdo too.

i collect old books....cookbooks, books on the royal family (british), etiquette books....i also love old xmas decorations....i think we all have things we enjoy and like....collecting grinches is what he enjoys and what he chooses to spend his money on, after his furbabies, they come first with him....

i remember old pencils with ads on them!!! i remember when every store use to hand out pencils with their business name on 'em!!!

I have an unofficial collection of antique rulers and yard sticks. One has a big ad for '65 Chevy's on it, it's 48 inches long and my favorite. I like a long yardstick, LOL!!! But I have many, and its all by accident. But how can you display them? I use them! I love them all because they have old ads on them.

You've found your spot here. LOL.

I like yardsticks too. I only have one. An old wood lumber yard thing. I'll bet there are all kinds of yardstick crafty displays.

Tia, I work in cook book land. What are you looking for? Glena just donated a pile 8 feet high because they were all over the shop. Not even joking.

Miss Tia said...

i like cookbooks from the 70s back....70s for the kitsch factor...same with the 60s....50s for all the 'ladies who lunch' 'luncheon' type recipes, those fascinate me.....20s-40s are usually basic down home cooking type cook books, practical, simple good eats....i love the spry cook books--you seen them? cook books based on products are good and ones with helpful household tips are good reads (yeah i'll read cook books too! great social documents of their eras i think).....

20s and prior are awesome.....i don't have many of them....my FAVORITE and oldest cookbook is from, shit, i'd have to reach to the end of the bed.....i think it's in the 1890s (i'm lazy, in bed & tired)....it's thick and filled with recipes and household tips....has how to make makeup, home remedies---including how to make EMBALMING FLUID...also how to help someone after they've been struck by lightening---put them under water for 2 hours....then i think you add salt for an hour if that doesn't work.....recipes for liquors, fruitcake---that has to set for 6+ months....definitely that's a favorite....

and i LOVE those cookbooks that i think came out in the 60s 100 ways with eggs, 200 ways with leftovers, etc....you know the ones i'm talking about? softcover ones? i STILL kick myself for not getting a complete set of them at a flea market in youngstown for $30 (over 100 cookbooks) like 6 years ago....

I will start sending you pics of any interesting ones that we get in to see if you want any. Glena collects them too, but, she can't keep all we get. The old ones are a hoot. How to kill a hog to make pork chops. Medical advice. OMG. The old church ladies know how to cook. Those seem the most useful.

Miss Tia said...

oh those church ones are good too, they definitely know how to cook! the ones with medical advice are good too.....thanks!!!! i hope to catch up with my email maybe today! :) so if i get some pictures i should be 'on top' of my email by then!!

Tia,
Fat quarters are great for a quilt. A four patch or nine patch could be done easily with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, batting and a contrasting fabric or large sheet. Lots of tips on you tube. I have seen grinch currently in fleece.
I like collecting primitive items, old scisscors, crockery, fabric...but grinch for an adult man seems odd. Is he developmentally delayed. If so, I get it and nothing wrong with that.

Miss Tia said...

uh no, eddie is not developmentally delayed....collecting grinches as an adult man makes you developmentally delayed? i'll pass that on to eddie, he will be bemused i am sure....he also is a big fan of bruce springsteen....now that one i would argue might be a sign of delayed development, same as for being a fan of the cleveland browns and indians....(uh, i'm joking.....)

thank you though for tip about grinch fleece....i will start looking for it as fleece blankets are very easy to make....i'm unsure if i could make a simple quilt with the fat quarters but i could try.....i'd be more confident with a fleece blanket.....
