Perennials
Last night I broke two fingernails putting in plants. I put in Speedwell (top) and Perennial Salvia (bottom). I had to take my mom to Alco and they had nice big gallon containers of these on sale for a buck. (originally marked $12.99 each!) I bought several of both. I need more blue and dark purple in my garden. I have never heard of Speedwell, so let's see how that does here. No one grows perennial Salvia here much either, but, I don't know why.
I looked all over the beds for weeds I could dig out and replace with plants, but, I couldn't find any. It's pretty much established now. So, I made a plant nursery in a new spot within hose reach and I'll move them next Spring to start new beds out back. That's the plan anyway. We'll see if they make it. Now is a good time to put in or plant seeds for perennials (or bi-annuals), since they take a season to develop. It's hard work though. I have 12 containers of home grown Hollyhocks to go in too. They've set near the hose all Summer looking like ugly weed in a pot. Next year they should look beautiful, but, I didn't want them in the garden all year taking up space in their ugly duckling form. They look like burr weed. I think they've been nearly eradicated here because people mistake them for burr. Burr is the most annoying weed on Earth.

i love hollyhocks! i had double flowering hollyhocks once at a place i lived at!!
once i get dressed (still in bathrobe, like that would stop me?) and outside, i'll take a pix of where my pampas grass is--and half buried in the mock orange, gotta dig that up and move it to eddie's this fall but you can see where it is and the weather it faces and the poor man's bamboo for ya!
aside from weeding this year and getting trash bags on the burdock root stumps i am only really planning on next year...i am SO looking forward to enjoying my yard like i haven't in YEARS next year! :)
Oh yes! I was real excited about the poor man's bamboo. I just know I'll love that. What plant are you moving to Eddie's and why?
gonna move the pampas grass to eddie's because the mock orange is taking over it...it's half covering the pampas grass! i tried to dig it up in may to take over to his new place but the ground was too hard....his son is gonna help me dig it up in october to transplant....i took over my rhododendron from up front---the honeysuckle was over taking it; i also took over my bee balm from my side yard as the butterfly bushes were covering it and a couple mums and a miniature japanese maple tree.....oh some yarrow too....
i want to plant roses of sharon along the side of his house (it gets full afternoon sun) but the ground has been too hard for me to dig them up!!!) then when it's been soft enough it gets too hot afterwards and i transplant some and they can't take the heat over there.....his son is gonna help with that in the fall---we're gonna transplant them and then he's gonna get a truckload of mulch to mulch them with....i'm also gonna take over some golden raspberries as they are spreading all over the yard and he had had red raspberries in the backyard of cherry street....
most of the stuff i'm moving is because i have things overtaking it, though the rose of sharon is for a practical reason (and it also spreads like hell....)...hey, you might want to consider planting them along your fence line! they grow quick and get really tall!! that's why i'm planting them along eddie's side of the house facing west since he has as an open exposure to that now.....
Man, you have some nice stuff. I am jealous. I have looked for Rose of Sharon but haven't found it yet. I will eventually. My favortite author is John Steinbeck. In Grapes Of Wrath that girl was named RoseOsharn. I think that's how they said it. Anyway, it stuck with me.
I wish I had it in me to do all this stuff, can barely maintain the little I have. When I was younger I loved it, now I'd just as soon cover everything with cement and just paint it to reflect the seasons!
Cindy
how did you send the hollies to CJ? i could send you a rose of sharon, or 3 or 5!!! just wrap the roots in a wet paper towel and baggy??? i can send you some small ones! they grow really quick! the ones i planted next to my small living room windows at about 3 feet high are now over 12 feet high and it's only been 3 years.....
The viburnum & holly were sent in the middle size priorty mail box. Each still had some dirt on the roots, well watered and put in a plastic bag. The viburnum was young enough (about 2' tall) that there wasn't any 'hard wood' on the stem yet, so I just kinda bent it in half. The holly was a volunteer runner, so it was curled up!
i still want some viburnum from you cj.....we gotta meet up somewhere sometime!!! i think some day i'll steal eddie's car!!! :D
All the volunteers I have now are good size... too big to mail. Noticed yesterday the deer had eaten most of the baby ones.
Middlefield or Geneva?
isn't middlefield amish country? that might be good---good eats!!!! either would be fine by me!!
Cindy, we paint everything eventually..lol. Painted cement is an art!
CJ and Tia, those plants CJ sent me did real well. A day or two in an envelope or box didn't hurt them a bit. How did the silver Clematis I sent back do?
if we meet half way, i wouldn't have to steal eddie's car---i can just hear him bitching about driving my van...haha....he bitched about it when he went to pick up his new dryer for his new place...."no plug in for my mp3 player" "check engine light on" [cuz of the gas cap not being fully tight] "gotta know how to work the locks".....HAH!
i could bring CHEESE selected by Dylan too!!!
is a silver clematis the one with the white flowers???
Yep. It's wild. I got it from a ditch and it's gorgeous in late Summer/Fall.
