Homemade butter...maybe

I just gave Lissa a jar of cream to shake into butter. I'll replace that pic with a pic of whatever we get. Which may or may not be butter. LOL..so far, it's pretty funny.************* Okay, there's my little butter maker, shaking the jar (she doesn't look too sure of this project) and there's our homemade butter. OMG, it's delish and only took a few minutes! I added some salt and it tastes like...the best butter ever! I saved the buttermilk from it and we're going to try making cheese! Ummm, cheese.

I love making butter. Ivemade fresh mozzarella a few times this summer too. It's pretty delicious. Awesome with the homegrown tomatoes for a Caprese salad.

You did? Cool! I've never made cheese in my life. We're going for farmer's cheese. It seems easy enough. It may not be and I'll have a mess. No harm in trying though.

Oh, I thought it might be good with fresh basil in it. Maybe I shouldn't try gettin' fancy?

I looked at your cheese. It looks amazing.

It was easy too and yes, that's what I thought too. No harm in trying. I have in my freezer the culture required to make cheddar. I just need to get unpasteurized milk and I have to get that in the city.

With the fresh mozza you can use regular whole milk.

Oh yes, me and my kid have made the homemade butter! Yum, way better than store bought. We put a little salt & a little honey in it too. Alton Brown made cottage cheese on Good Eats with skim & vinegar- it's cooked on the stove. I'm not so sure about that, but the butter is awesome! Liss sure is getting big Pat. She's starting to look like a teenager.

I've been wanting to try to make butter. The thing is (and I find this weird), I seem to have developed this mentality that certain things won't be as good if they're made at home. I know this is silly, because every homemade food item I've made is way better than anything store bought, but it's still there. I even feel this way about homegrown veggies! I think it's too many years living in the city.

Anyhow, what a fun thing to do with kids and you have inspired me to try and do more home projects with mine.

A friend of mine did this in 3rd grade and we all got to taste it with bread after lunch. It took her a while to shake it into butter. So good. Pat, Michael Clark Duncan passed. 54. He was ill tho. & had been hospitalized previously. He was not really on my radar except I knew he had been very ill. I don't think we haave seen the last, this week. Dammit. He was a great guy.

I just read about Michael Clark Duncan, too. I will really miss him. He had a beautiful smile, and a very gentle demeanor, and I'll bet he was great to work with.
Someone once said that when he smiles, angels sing, or something like that. He was too young to die. I knew it wasn't good, when he had to have CPR (by Omarosa), and then it took forever for him to even make it out of critical care. I mean weeks, at least. Terrible that there couldn't have been a transplant, or something that would have given us more of him. I know. I'm selfish.

Interesting that you made butter. I remembered doing that in second grade, and bought some cream and shook it until I had butter about two weeks ago. It's wonderful, and so cool that you had Lissa do this. She will remember it, and someday she will probably teach her own child while thinking of you.

Pom, waste some cream. Try it. It's delish and fun. I told Lis she was like Laura Ingles. :)

ps..I'd been warned it could take 20-30 minutes. It took 4.

Do you just put heavy whipping cream in a jar and shake shake shake? Or are there more steps? I want to try this!! :)

Gimme some more details!

And I don't mean "just" as in it's simple...I imagine it's a right good arm workout!

Jane, here is a link to a video that I used to make the fresh mozza.

You will need a gallon of whole milk, rennet tabs or powder, citric acid and salt. Citric acid and rennet is available at most health food stores but I had to go into the city because I live in a one horse hick town.

Trust me when I say it is EASY. I've had one batch fail so far. It didn't form into curds and I think I could have saved it if I was willing to work with it a little longer.

We used to do this in our Kindergarten class, back when the dinosaurs roamed and schools had the budget to do these fun 'science projects' in class. It was the best tasting ever, especially on Saltines! How fun! Let us know how your cheese turns out. : )

LOL dinos. We painted on cave walls with char from the dinner fire.

Thanks Frimmy, I'll have to wait until I find a health food store. I too live in a small town. Can't wait to try it!
