Wild things

The wild things are back! I was so glad to see they recovered from the idiot mowing them last year. On the right is Chinese Lantern and on the left, wild Ginseng. These were both bird planted (I assume) and neither are native here. I've never seen either in the wild here or in domestic gardens. How they got this far North is a mystery. You can buy the Lantern seed, but, I can't get it to grow. It's very picky.  How in the world do you find wild Ginseng seed?? I have no clue. It's not sold here. So, this stuff is pretty and precious. I couldn't believe it when that idiot cunt my mom hired mowed and destroyed it all last year. You can see it's been weeded, so why would you mow it? I've been hauling rocks and cement pieces to protect it from the mower. It's hot though and the rocks are out back and this spot is clear out front by the street, so I do a little every night.

The umbrella shaped Ginseng is making berries. They will turn bright orange soon and it will be quite showy. You can click the pics to see better. It really is unusual. There's a lot of it this year and I read that it hates the sun. So, I'm going to risk moving one plant next time it rains. I'll put it in dappled shade and see if I can get it going in a closer spot. The Lanterns seem to like the sun. They turn bright orange in the Fall and it looks like they're lit from within. These plants are so incredible and I'm so lucky to have them. I need to pile those rocks three deep. Fucking idiots with lawn mowers and chain saws. I think that bitch did it on purpose. She's in cahoots with the old lady to make me miserable.

This isn't exactly wild Garlic, but, I didn't plant it. The Garlic I plant never does well, so I gave up on it. But, these seeds blew in from a neighbor's garden and I now have two patches of them the lawn mower could never get. It's a pretty plant, some ancient variety. I love the Garlic whistles and the way it smells faintly when you walk by. The bulbs won't mature until fall, but, there's a lot of it, so I go ahead and dig some to cook with now. They taste fine, just small. I should add some herbs out here. It seems like a good spot for them. I have some I can transplant. Oh, there's big bush of Lemon Balm out here too. It smells heavenly, but, I have no idea how to use it. Do you?

There were Chinese Lanterns growing in my yard when we bought this house years ago. So, they do grow in the cold north. Was reading up on the Wild Ginseng ... it's endangered. Get more rocks around those plants so the idiot lawn person doesn't kill them this summer.

You have the coolest stuff growing in your yard :)

From what I've read it grows in places like Kentucky, Tenn, S. Carolina..in the woods. The hillbillies harvest it for money and some go to jail for poaching it in national parks. It's expensive and a 'money crop' like marijauana, but, not generally illegal, of course. I tell people it's a flower. I don't want it dug up by idiots. It floored me when I finally figured out what it was. Thanks for what you said. I think I have a lot of cool wild stuff because I'm not a mower or weed wacker. I'm more interested in finding out what stuff is before I go chopping it. Some people are just nuts for a bare mowed treeless yard. They can't comprehend that I like most plants. I don't care if they're 'weeds' as long as they're Purdy. It's MY yard. I wish they'd fuck off.

Lemon balm can be put into ice tea. Just crush up the leaves. Or you can make ice cubes with the lemon balm in them for iced tea. Dry some and make hot tea. Sample the leaf and think of what you'd like to have it in!

Ohhhhhh, great tips. Thank you! I also have wild onion/garlic, but, I don't try it. Something tells me it might be poisionous. I know that Lemon Balm is safe though.

Speaking of wild things, I just caught 3 young raccoon siblings eating cat food on mom's porch. I was talking to them in coon speak and they are nearly tame. I watched as they went under her house through a hole in the foundation. The kids pulled the cover off there looking for treasure. Now, I have to remove them. I have to get a plan here.

I'm like you, it's looks good, smells good, tastes good, or does good, I'm leaving it there.

Pat,

I just want you to sincerely know how much I adore your posts! I am always learning something new. After I open my diet coke every morning, your blog is the first one I hit. I am always hoping for a new post, or more. (greedy) But I want you to know how much I appreciate you. When there isn't stupid fighting on here it is so pleasant and when you need to share I feel your frustrations.

Have a great day knowing you make my mornings.
