Hero or normal person?..both

source
That's a photo of Isabel Williams, in the cold, NYC street. She came upon that woman who recently delivered a baby in the street and gave her a coat and her flannel shirt to wrap the newborn in. When she saw the woman giving birth on the cold street, before the paramedics had arrived, she said, there was already a crowd of people, but, they were busy filming the birth. She asked if anyone had called 911 and was told no, so she did.

The whole story just freaked me out. WTF kind of world do we live in when people film something as terrifying as a birth on a street instead of thinking to help?? I mean, jesus. I can only imagine the terror and pain that mother was in when she realized she wasn't going to make it to the hospital and dropped to the pavement. And a shit ton of people thought they'd pull out their phones and put it on Facebook or some shit?? And not one offered her their coat?? Or held a coat up to give her some privacy?? WTF is wrong with people? No one even called 911? Holy fuck.

The baby's middle name is now Isabel. Ms. Williams said, you just do what you have to do, and she's offered to babysit in the future. The story freaked me out and then made me depressed. I don't expect everyone to have the hero mentality, but, this is just...so lame and awful. What is wrong with people?

nothing is wrong. All that was needed was one person who helped. One person did help. Everything is fine.

I think what's wrong Ima - is that before this particular person arrived on scene - the people already there had a first instinct to grab their phones and film and not the instinct or action to do anything to help. That makes me very sad and Im glad Im not hardened enough to believe that taking video to post wherever is okey dokey.

I know. It's just depressing how people think now.

Taking a video of someone's troubles is sadistic. Instead of trying to help, they are actually being "entertained". How cruel is that! And we call ourselves a civilized society.

People suck. Some days you just want to cry with the lack of humanity, then you run in to someone who makes your day/week/month. I just live for those moments when I have a human connection with another stranger.

I work in a hospital, so I get to see good people all the time, and am so proud to call these folks my colleagues.

It's truly sad when I'm walking out to my car sometimes, and I see a lost, frantic family, so I offer help and show them the way to where they need to find a relative. The gratitude is out of proportion for the small act. I was on my way home the other night, it was 17 degrees and this woman was wandering the parking garage--couldn't find her car after her brother had a stroke. I put her in my car (easier than calling security) and drove her around until we found it...if only those asshole types who film people knew what it felt like to do the right thing, or had been taught to do the right thing.

Sorry for my long post.

While the internet is an amazing tool, I truly believe it is contributing greatly to the downfall of our society.

oh come on. It was just a woman popping another baby out of her human making machine.

Nothing serious. Duggars do it all the time.

So stop the drama.

It's really dehumanizing for people to pull out their phones/cameras, when someone is clearly in distress. In my mind, it just says that we are becoming very detached from each other. It really is a sad commentary on our times.
Lovely that the one woman helped out. I am sure the new mom did not intend to give birth in full view of all those people. Just wish a few of those knuckleheads with cameras could have allowed her a little dignity. Who knows where all those digital recordings have gone and who has seen them.
