You can go HERE and read about Brad Pitt's new obsession. It used to be architecture, then art..now it's wine. It's easy to say it's pretty simple to be a wine expert when you can just go buy a spectacular vineyard, but, Brad and Angie worked for their money and they can spend it as they want. So, they bought a vineyard and he's learning how it all works. In one way I think it's really cool. But, another part of me just yawns and glazes over. All wine tastes like mouldy dust to me. Even the smell of it makes me want to vomit. Wine people are nuts, the way they carry on about wine and the differences and the vintages and bla, bla. Cork sniffers, I call them. At least Brad won't turn all Goopy about it. I hope Angie likes wine too, because he's going to be talking about this for years. Of course, she does have some influence. They don't live in Waterfall House, do they? Heh heh. No. They live in castles now. Who's idea was that? Umm hmm.
What's your take on wine and wine experts? Can you even stand it and the cork sniffers? You know what else I hate? The wine captains in restaurants. Wine 'captain' with your stupid corkscrew necklace, I'll have a Pepsi on ice. No, you won't get a wine tip here. Sorry. I'll give you a buck if you can get the harp player to do some Nirvana though. I'm classy like that.

I like wine, but I'm not heavily into it. There are lots (LOTS) of vineyards in Northwest Oregon. We pass a lot as we go to the coast. I've never been to a wine-tasting, though, and have only sniffed a couple of corks out of curiosity.
I like white zinfandel, and a few whites and an occasional red, but not on any regular basis.
I have several whine LOL!! typo and it stays! I have several wine racks that I bought at garage sales, and I mostly just like the way they look sitting around.
Oregon Blossom is a great white zin if anyone is interested. The Safeway wine expert recommended it to me, and she was right. That's where I go for my best wine advice, right after I check out the bakery, deli and prescriptions.
Right now I am buying cheap champagne (or sparkling wine, whatever) and making mimosas. My favorite.

Oh. And I guess if you can afford to buy your own vineyard, and don't have to work, learning to use the vineyard to make wine is a reasonable thing to do. I won't buy any of their wine, because it will probably be more expensive just because they own it, but I think learning how to do it properly is a nice rich man's occupation.

I couldn't stand making wine out of my pretty grapes. Grapes are so delicious, just being grapes or jam.
I love wine, but the elitism built into the culture can be irritating. But I do love a good bottle of wine.
There are some good non-snooty wineries in the Midwest. Some of my favorites are near Traverse City, MI.
I also believe in making wine out of what you're able to grow in your region, rather than aping Europeans. Many Euro grapes will not grow here b/c of the harsh winters.
When we lived in NE there was a winery near Lincoln that made a very good apple wine. Not sweet, kind of like a Chardonnay.
Here in WI our friends and we experiment making our own wine. The elderly parents of one of our friends have a pear orchard and more pears than they know what to do with. Our friend has learned to make an excellent pear wine, crisp and fruity, not sweet.
One piece of "elitist" info I'll pass along: Sniffing corks is for rubes. Real oenophiles don't do it. :)
Still enjoying your blog...

I'm a rube. I liken it to sniffing underpants. Don't wanna do that either.
I'll have a Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill on ice, please! Yes, I am a connissour. (sp?) I can't spell it but I am one! Yes, I am!
LOL Boon's Farm brings back memories of my friend Shirley and her damn wine. She always put on a floor length fancy dress and hot platforms and drank Boon's Farm or Blue Nun out of a fancy glass. Shit faced. Falling over. Snoring. LMAO! I never could stand the smell of wine even when I had to serve it.
Lol Jane! I have had that in years! Brings back fun memories!
I love wine - all kinds. I don't like the pretentiousness about it either. I think it's a preference thing - if you like it, it's good for you. I do love going to Napa and Sonoma though. That is a happy place for me. I've gotten to go a few times now. I could go multiple times a year and be happy. It's so peaceful there.
I have fond memories of going to work on days after a night out. I was processing books in an unair-conditioned room. (summer high school job) What did I get on my break but an ice cold red pop. It was so good going down. Five minutes later, I saw it again in vivid color. Good thing I made it to the bathroom.
Oh! I think Shirley and I would have gotten along well together. A woman after my own heart. Boy, I miss those days. My body just couldn't handle the abuse. Falling off your shoes can hurt!
Wine is good! I've just had a glass! Life is good. It only cost $10. Goodness knows how much a bottle they are spending. But if a $10 bottle can make me feel this chirpy well then I don't know how great they must be feeling! I have to say I read an interview with Angelina in our local Saturday Magazine today and some of the things she said made me kinda teary. She's really high minded in her views on everything. Good wine, 6 gorgeous kids, a seriously hot man, as well as all the rest should bring out the best in a human, and it seems to have done so in her.
