This makes me so happy it's ridic!!!!

All the rows of greens and herbs we planted in the garden are up and adorable!! Nothing failed to germinate this year. Wooo hoo! Yes, I know my excitement over this is annoying. I even annoy myself.

Ditto all the flower seeds!!! Even the weird ones!! Here, Zinnia's poke through everywhere! Such a joy. Is that a shingle? Wtf?

The second planting of Kentucky Burl Tobacco is up with hardly a missed space in the bunch! Yay!!! The rain tried to drown them, but, I caught it in time.

The various melon and pumpkin seedlings are the most exciting things out there. Grow, my little babies, grow!!!!! You shall be Jack O Lanterns and yummy juices from my juicer!!

That's a 'dead' Tomato. Yeah. I didn't have the heart to rip the poor dead ones out when I replaced them, so I just planted between. I figured one or two of them might try to live. No, not one or two..ALL of them made it. They grew back from the bottom, see? You saw them. They were deader than dead. Only, they weren't.  Plus, all the stray seeds I planted that were decades old all came up. Holy shit. No one needs that many Tomatos. WTF? Well, it's a good thing I like them, I guess. I sure hope my friends needs some this year though.

I have about 5 days left to plant any leftover or desirous seeds and that's it. After that, it will be way too hot here. So, I'm just strolling around with a shovel and basket, planting the fuck out of anything that will hold still long enough for me to dig it. Planty, plant, plant! It makes me happy and I can always move the seedlings if I get around to it. If you don't plant them, then you know nothing will grow. It's better this way, right? Right.

Angie, your Z's will pop up soon. You can't keep them down. I love them!!!

I just planted the remainder of my seedlings. My Swiss chard, peppers and beets are tiny! My corn is doing good, we planted the butter squash and the sugar punkin in with the corn. Hoping the slugs don't get to them before we can slug-bait the shit out of the beds. I got a bunch of Walla Walla sweet onions planted. And zucchini, cucumbers and lemon cucumbers, of course. Last year I tried sunflowers, only one took and got timbered by the damn slugs.

Meissa, so good to see you again! I heard that slugs hate copper. I tried making a ring around one with pennies and it seemed to be true. Now I throw stray pennies in the garden. Couldn't hurt. I don't drink beer, so I dunno about that one. We hunt them with salt. It's quite the sport in Guntown.

You gotta try the sunnies again, we're having a Sunflower Brigade on here!

Someone sent me this the other day. All the things you can do with cucumbers, I went out and bought. Bagfull straight away, I love munching on them. But I'm asking here about point 12, where it says you can use it as a pesticide. Wonder if it works?

I don't know, but, come to think of it, not many bugs attack cukes. They eat the plants, but, not the fruit. Except those stink bug type beetles. Couldn't hurt to try it, I guess.

Hey DD! *waves* (did you get my email?)

I talked my husband into laying a couple of tires and filling them with dirt. So now I'm back in here to get my seeds and put them in there!

My veggie garden was so awesome last year.

I'll bet it was. Maybe this year, I'll get some pics. You know I love garden pics.

Goin' to look for that email.

I planted Lupine seeds last spring in pots. Nothing happened, but then I read somewhere that they take 2 seasons to sprout so I left them alone. Guess what came up a couple of weeks ago? So exciting!

Seeds planted and watered! When the garden grows more I will send you some photos. I have photos from last year's, a before and after. I will email you the link with a little blurb of what we did. It was a drastic change.

Meissa, it sounds like you have quit a garden going there. Is it as big as it sounds?

We have been very dry here for the last month so my seeds are slow. But I saw the weather forcast and it said thunder storms for the next 4 days. Hope the seeds don't wash away.

Ok just as easy to put the photos from 2013 on my dropbox:

here

The photos for some reason are out of order. You can see how out of control the garden was. The last time anyone did anything with it was 15 years ago, before my FIL took in a truckload of soil that was contaminated with equisetum, which spread throughout the whole property. We (mostly the hubby) pulled out some major grass wads out of the raised beds. We cleaned 5 out of 6 beds, but only because the backhoe wouldn't reach the bed in the middle.

There is another section behind the grapevines, there are three or four rows of trellis that used to have berry bushes. The in laws used to make berry wine. I would like to recover that too.

The corn was the best corn I've ever had. We planted two spinach plants, but they went to flower do quickly we had to give them up. The chard, on the other hand, that shit kept producing well into fall. Who needs spinach! Chard is awesome.

When the garden grows a little more this year, I'll share more pics!

I harvested the zinnia seeds from my plants last year, so I can't imagine why they wouldn't germinate...I love them so much and there is nothing like a vase of zinnias, so I will be patient.

I read recently about a cure for slugs. A 4:1 solution of ammonia and water, sprayed on once a week. I have a hosta bed that has been decimated by slugs in the past, so I gave it a try. So far, so good and the ammonia seems to also provide nitrogen. I imagine it would work for other plants as well, so that's my gardening tip for the day.

I don't have any of my stuff in yet :( I listen to a garden show every Sunday on the radio and the expert recommends to never plant tomatoes here before June 1st. I know the ground should be really warm for cucumbers. I have so many zinnias coming up from last year it's ridiculous. They grew giant last year. I'm going to have some transplanting to do.

Tomorrow I'm going to concentrate on pulling up my old garden fabric and putting down some new stuff. I also have a hosta and tiger lily to move because I want my tomatoes in a different spot along the fence this year. I had such good luck with cantaloupes I may put those in again. At least I know I won't get salmonella if I grow them myself.

I take half cans (cat food can work or also half the red plastic solo cups) and bury them level with the soil. Then I fill them with beer. For some reason the slugs love Guinness. The containers get filled really quick with slugs and bud worms. This year I'm spraying with BT again before the bud worms appear. First I have to make sure it won't hurt my praying mantis that always show up and kick back on my zinnias.

I love verbena but last year I had such a problem with powdery mildew I'm not sure I'll plant it this year.

I have rose trees in pots. (It is the best I can do, I live in a condo) Some of the leaves have holes in them and I can't figure out what is eating them!! The roses bloom beautifully though. Any remedy ideas?

I can't figure out how to post a picture to show the problem.

Dirty Disher said...

Briezy, I had that same thing happen. I love them.

Meissa, I planted Kale and Chard last year only to find out I hate Kale and Chard. That shit is weird. Kale chips were invented by Satan.

Eriny, don't know, but, try spraying with soap and water. Bugs hate that.

All these garden comments are making me so excited.

Pan, I put the new cloth right over the old cloth. It seems to work.

I planted night blooming Jasmine this year. Anyone else have that? I know nothing about it. It's pretty though, even without flowers.

I should clarify on my slug remedy post...the 4:1 solution is four parts WATER and one part ammonia...I typed it the other way.

We just moved to the country from a big city (Toronto) so we are having fun getting our garden together. A bit late because we had to clear the land first. We also got 6 chicks which my 2 & 3 year old boys love. Exciting times here!

Angie, I'm a zinnia person. Who can't look at a vase full of zinnias and not be happy. I save my seeds from last year and had a large bag full. I've been throwing seeds all over the place.

I also saved my sunflower seeds from last year but they don't seem to be coming up. I may have to buy some to make sure.

Meissa, I am envious of your garden setup. When you said backhoe, I knew you meant business.

Dirty Disher said...

I agree. Backhoe! Man, I miss those days. Horse poop for free and a man with a backhoe. But, then again, if he hadn't had a front ho too, we'd still be gardening together. Heh.
