WTF? Weird Bee in the yard
I spotted this weird bee in the yard just now. I watched him guarding and fanning...something. He was intent on whatever he was guarding, chasing any insect who got close and then returning to fan. WTF? That is one of the weirdest bees I have ever seen. Looks like a Bumble Bee, but, bigger and has a blue metallic butt. What? I know, I was like WTF too.
He was fanning and guarding another bigger bee on the ground. I got it in the first two pics. It seemed to be having trouble, it looked tired. I know that sounds weird, but, it did. I gave them some water which he did buzz over and dip his feet in. He seemed to like it. You can only see the blur of his wings, but, they were long, large and transparent. His 'face' is adorable. They were not aggressive towards me. I don't have zoom..I was that close. Finally, he got his fat buddy off the ground and they went to the backyard. I left them alone. I'm gonna go see if I can find out what the hell these are.
Oh! Carpenter Bees! They live in dens they make by drilling perfect holes in wood. Wow. They do pollinate. They're good bees.

We better respect the bees. They go and they will take all of mankind with them. Humanoids have GOT to stop thinking they are the superior species.
I love bees and all the good they do.
It has a face like a bat!
Every morning when we walk to school there are consistently 4-6 dead bees just laying on the ground. Now I don't know if their lifespan has just ended or if something else is maybe cutting it short. I have bee friendly plants outside my fence but inside where the kids play - I try to minimize bee loving flowers. Doesn't help much as the neighbors have lots of roses.
We see carpenter bees throughout the summer too. They just seem to bounce lazily around.
I've seen Car[enters, but, I thought they were all black. Nope. All kinds of em. I was glad to find out they don't kill honey bees and they are pollinaters. I hope they stay so I can watch them, but, their life cycle sounds short and weird.
Jane, isn't that funny! It was markings, probably to scare enemies. I read all about them. They don't have hives. They mate in pairs. The female was tired! The male protects her until they can make the nest, lay eggs (6-8), and then she dies. So sad! The HE goes off to just suck flowers all Summer. I love the net!
OH, and the male has no stinger. He couldn't have hurt me, no wonder he wasn't agressive. I guess these are common in the Eastern US. I had never seen one, it was thrilling.
Huge bee advocate here. Monsanto is killing off the bees. Don't use Round Up in your gardens. Mix white vinegar, Dawn soap and salt and spray it on weeds. They will die and stay dead. Won't hurt bees. Bees = Life on earth. Save The Bees. Or we all die. Thank you for this post.
So sick of these environmentalists and all their bee crap. Bees do nothing beneficial. Kill them all. Save our children.
it is not a bee.
It is a fly.
Melvin, Did you use to dress up like Dr. Evil when you were a kid? We all know you're a pussy cat!
White vinegar, Dawn & salt,
I'm gonna try it, Roundup scares the crap out of me and the boiling water on the weeds has not been working very well.

x2
I'm going to try that white vinegar, Dawn recipe, though my chickens might be mad at me if I get rid of all the weeds. They love their salad.
Now that I know what Carpenter bees are, I might get one of those boxes.
