I wanted to blog all day, but, I have 3 kids here, in ma face. There's an old Castoria bottle I dug up in the yard today. No chips or cracks. Cork top, pale green, uneven glass. It amazes me that something can lay out there for 100 years and be fine. My grandma always told me about Castoria, she took it as a child. It was an old time remedy for children's constipation. Lovely, ehh? I'll keep it, it's only worth about $10 bucks. I can set it on the windowsill for that and enjoy it. Put it with the rest of the glass I've dug up. I think I've discovered the site of the old out house. A bounty for bottle collectors.
Weird, but, very beautiful long vine growing on the woodpile at the new house. They thought, Sumac or Oak maybe, you know, the poisons. But, no leaves of three to let be. Hmm. I'm thinking Virginia Creeper, which is rare here. Because I'm an optimist. Okay, that's bullshit. I already touched it and nothing happened. Besides, it looks like something that would be called Virginia Creeper. Whatever it is, it's getting peeled off that wood and put on a trellis.
Picked from the garden today. I really thought there'd be more tomatoes by now. Well, there are tons, but they just stay green. Everything else is doing well though.
Alissa just had me take her to spend her money on a slip and slide thing. This was after I took them all to the bank with bags of pennies. These kids are driving me frickin' crazy. Seriously. I may have to be institutionalized. I have managed not to raise my voice all day, but, now they're just messing with me. I am on my last frayed nerve ending. They have been warned.
There's two more pics of that strange vine, I didn't have time to put on before because.....kids. OMFG Kids. Anyway, I had time to Google Virginia Creeper (for 30 seconds) and I think I'm right. I have no idea what made me say that, since you don't see that in Iowa. Maybe I'd seen it in a catalogue and liked it? Strange things stick in my damaged brain. The reds and patterns are incredible. The newer leaves are green. My cousin Joey suggested maybe it came in with the wood. Some of the wood came from down South. That makes sense. It sure is pretty stuff and at around 20 foot long, I'd hate to try and move it and kill it. I'll betcha I can unhook it though when we move that wood pile and a trellis would look nice there. I noticed a smaller start of it on one side about 6 inches high. I know, boring, right? But, I get so excited by new plants and figuring them out. I've found three rare plants over there and I plan to protect them. I just love finding new varieties of wild plants. If anyone lives where they have Virginia Creeper, could you click the pics and take a look for me?

Love old glass bottles. I can't wait to see whatelse gets uncovered at you new old house!
My tomatoes aren't ripening either (I'm in PA). Green beans, lettuce, peppers and eggplant are all doing well. Go figure!
The kids know just how long they can push your buttons. They all enjoy being with you.

The bottle was from this house. I was digging some Lemon Balm starts. But, I'm sure the new house is just as rich in junk and more junk. I know it is. What is with the tomatoes this year?? Hundreds of big ones..all green. At least I got one red one, finally. Joey told me my mom thinks it's hilarious to steal mine and feed them to the dog. Thanks, mom. Joan Crawford.
The kids are all nice today but ONE. Guess which one? Yeah. I have never spanked a kid. But, today might be the day.
Our tomatoes are all staying green too. Apparently it's not Hot enough this summer. In fact. It's down right chilly here. Ppl are saying it's like late September. But they can't turn red in chilly temps. They need sun. And heat. I am craving my annual BLT feast. 🐖🐖🐖. Sweet corn is doing great. Our freezer is full of corn. And we are still getting more. I love me some fresh corn dripping with real butter.
Never spanked a kid? That takes lots of self control. Sometimes, and haters gonna hate, but kids just need a spanking.
My mom has virginia creeper, and her leaves are pointy. They turn red more like a tree leaf would, sort of gradually...not around the edges like that. But maybe it's different in different areas?? Everyone has it in Edmonton. My mom will find a new shoot and just pull it up and plant it where she wants it. It's beautiful in the fall when it turns red, and it has little berries.
Hey DD I've been wanting to post pics of this year's garden but haven't gotten around to. Here you go!
Garden 2014
What a gorgeous bounty of veggies! Yum! Makes me crave a Greek Salad.
I love those little medicine bottles. It's nice to let the light catch through them in the window. I like to put food coloring in the water and one stemmed flower and watch the flower turn that color while it absorbs the water through the stem.
Well, did a spanking occur? Oh oh. Hope the rest of the day and evening was peaceful. x0

I had potted tomatos last year and didn't completely clean the pot. Tottal neglect for a year. So now I have beefsteak tomatoes growing on vines that migrated from the pot to the pavement and to a tree. Yes, a beefsteak tomato tree, what fun!
I remember castor oil very well, from my grandma administered to me.
Damn Meissa! I think I've got watermelons like yours- I thought the May be pumpkins - I planted a lot of seeds. I still have all green tomatoes too.
Hey where is everyone's Sunflowers, from the sunflower project a couple months ago? Mine are about 5' with no fowler yet. Pat, can we send our sunflower pics to you for posting?
Shelly
We get Virginia Creeper here in northern Indiana and I yank it asap. It'll grow 50' in a year if unchecked and will strangle trees, bushes, & fences.
And it will make your hands itch like crazy if you don't wear gloves while pulling it. It also sends out runners and can be crazy to keep in check if it gets away from you.
There are a lot of plants that I'll let be as long as they're not bothering anything, but if that's a creeper, (and it does look like one) then I'd be digging it up by the roots and tossing it before it spreads all over the place.
I remember Fletcher's Castoria, and Chamberlain's, too. My mom would take them occasionally when I was little. I really liked the smell of Chamberlain's. Weird, and medicinal, but, interesting.
The garden is a complete bust this year, but I bought some tomato plants on clearance, and we do have some red ones on.
Rats. They just called me in. I'm only scheduled until 7:30, and they have to pay me for 3 hours minimum at time and a half, so I am committed to the rest of the shift. Bummer. Andy has been so sick that we have been staying home with him, and George and I both wound up home today. He was up during the night, so he is upstairs sleeping. I will have to wake him up to let him know I am leaving. I guess some sleep is better than no sleep. I'd better get ready.

My mom gave us Castoria too. And I remember her being addicted to enemas. Once she gave each of the 3 of us kids an enema one Saturday morning. Bad idea. 1 bathroom. Lol.
Love the glass bottles, went to an antique store today and they had a million.
Shelly, they are actually sugar punkins! Those were from three days ago, I uploaded photos from today and they got bigger! Also, check back on the dropbox link, I added a couple of clips of the neighbor's cows :D
My sunflowers are getting tall! No flowers yet.
Oh I keep forgetting to share this one. A tour to the veggie garden, from three weeks ago!
I'm on my second round of sunflowers and they aren't doing so good. The first got washed away. This has not been my year for anything. A few zinnias and that's it. Maybe I'll do better with fall tomatoes.
Meissa, what a nice garden. I envy your grapes, so big. I hope you get ripe grapes this year. What will you do with them? Also, where are you located? Ice storms were mentioned in the video and I was wondering where that would be. Didn't see any tomatoes. I thought that was the center of all gardens.
I have another question. When you grow onions, can you use the tops like you do with shallots or green onions?
Wholy shit Meissa, that video was so cool! I love the above ground beds. The walk to the garden looks like where I use to live in northern michigan. And yes, those little pumpkins are what I have, but not as big as yours. So cool that all that awesome stuff comes up from seeds and tiny plants!
Shelly
I'm in Olympia, WA, Jane. Tomatoes are on his parent's deck where we don't have to hike that much to get to them. The grapevines are pretty old, there's two varieties. His parents used to make wine, but not anymore. They are tiny and seedy. We don't do anything with them but try to give them away. Yes we use the greens of the onions as well. We picked a fat purple scallion and I chopped it all off in my salad, it was yum. I used one of the new Walla Walla sweet in a potato and zucchini hash. I sprinkled the greens on top. Gawd, yum.
Shelly, the garden itself is pretty old. It was abandoned for more than 15 years when the last load of soil came contaminated with equisetum, and we recovered it last year. I posted this one before, but here it is again, this album has pics from 2013, the before and after.
