Surviving the Winter

..and is Spring really coming? I don't know, but, I am prepared for an Iowa ambush. We may still get a freak blizzard or an early tornado. I managed to find a sprouting Hosta in the dollar store trash and I planted it today. I put it in a pot with a Dusty Miller that had managed to live through the Winter on my back porch. I have several plants that shouldn't have lived, but, they did. From Geraniums to Sage. I will replant them. The point is, they made it through and so did I. I am never sure I'll see another Spring, so it always surprises me when I do. Now I have work to do.

Welcome to a Pagan household, no, I do not care to find your Jesus. Want some Mead?

Now I need to plant, take out trees that didn't make it and figure out where to place all the lawn ornaments that made it. They can't all hang out in the front. Junky. Hey, those are some of the lawn chairs I got for that old oil sign I found. I like them a lot.

Some things never change, but, I know it's time for me to stop hiding in the house and get out and about. I know some of you do that too, so, who's with me? I know how difficult it is, I get it. But sometimes we have to force ourselves through the fear and revulsion and just fucking do it.

  1. Winter is one gigantic pile of suck. Leonardo DiCaprio loves it though.

  2. This weather is a teaser, but we're getting closer. I'm anxious to see if my roses made it. I waited too long to put the covers on them. Again. You'd think I'd learn. The wind is crazy today, but along with the warmer weather, it's manageable.

  3. I have roses I left and I want them back. I also need to hire someone to move my arbor and some cement I left. That should be fun, dealing with the old lady. The good times just won't stop. But, I want my shit.

  4. We had an unusually mild winter. There were a couple of weeks of (for us ) cold weather, and a few snowflakes mixed in the rain. Daffodils are blooming, and the trees are budding, but we could still have a cold snap.
My yard sucks. It is truly ugly, and I feel badly for my neighbors. Emma has dug holes everywhere up front and I gave up trying to fill them in some time ago. I had bark dusted the area yearly for awhile to keep the mud at bay, but I gave up on that, too. so. . . Holes in the brown mud, that fill up with rain. Charming.

  5. I put a couple of pictures on your FB page.

Christina, I sure hope you don't twist your ankle in a hole.

  6. Hey, Border! Thanks for your concern. There are actually times it is a near miss for me. The backyard has fewer holes, but the mud is slicker, somehow. Always an issue when I go out to take care of the chickies. My ex did a poorly thought out repair on the chicken run roof a year ago, and the upshot is that there are probably about 8 or 9 leaks into mud holes in the run. There is an at least 3ft by 3ft mud bog just inside the door. The mud is probably about 4 inches deep when it rains hard. It's almost sucked my boots off before. I do not want to go down in that. Twisting my ankle is a definite concern, and I am not sure how I have not done so this far.

  7. Christina, your description of your front yard reminds me of a Wack-A-Mole board. Or a mine field! Walk with care!

  8. I've got grass growing over holes so it isn't apparent they are there. I'm learning to avoid certain areas I'm not all that stable. Do take great care, try to get your son, or call a company to get your mess fixed, maybe with rocks and bark or put boards up to remind you where they are.

  9. Christina, I have an idea. Get a bunch of potted plants and put them in the holes. You not only fill the holes but add beauty to your yard. Granted it may look a little weird but what the heck. At least you will know where the holes are. And Emma will know where to put a new hole.

  10. Last night I had a family dinner party here. It was probably the nicest party I have ever had. . . maybe because George was not here, I don't know. Anyway, I only bought two 2-liter bottles of diet ginger ale as pop, because most of the people drink cider, or sometimes wine. I put them just outside the back door (my ghetto cooler) because I ran out of room in the fridge. The doggies were outside, but up front. I went to get a bottle probably 20 minutes later, for my great niece, but there was only one where once were two. I wondered if the shady neighbor took it, but then searched the front yard from a corner of the front porch, and realized Emma had stolen it, and tried to hide it in one of the holes. I really do need to do something about the situation out there.
I don't know if I can put plants in the holes, as she has been one to pull out plants. She tore down about half of my snowball bush a couple weeks ago, and completely tore out my daphne (which totally broke my heart) last fall. I think this is just still puppy stuff, but hopefully I will be able to hire someone to help me with landscaping at some point.

  11. Christina: I have chickens too...and swampy mud problems in the run. I throw down a bale or two of straw several times a year...does the trick for us. Straw is cheap if you can find a farmer around that has it, or your local feed store.

Pat: Can't wait to see what you do with the gardens in the spring/summer.

  12. I have been throwing down an occasional bag of bedding pellets as they turn into fine sawdust on contact with moisture. It then needs to be dug out later, as it adds volume, especially by the door. As the leak continues, due to the faulty roof situation, I have to add more. I have only added eastern or western long grass or rarely, alfalfa, for entertainment, and for the girls to eat. The bales are pretty difficult for me to manage anymore, though.

  13. I'm sorry, but I have to laugh @ Border's suggestion Christina further ornament her cratered mud bog with boards. That just strikes me as hilarious for some reason, lol.

  14. Wow! We had an exciting day around here today. We have had tornadoes pass through here before. Usually one at a time. Today we had 4 in my close area. Although some news is saying a couple might have been the same just hitting in different places. It was really weird---bad for us but nothing like the devastation we see in tornado alley or Dixie alley. I had another procedure on my neck this morning and had to be at the hospital early. So by the time I got out of recovery and we got some breakfast (had to go to iHOP) the rain and the wind had started up. Made it through (going home)about an hour before the tornadoes. Of course when I got home, I went to bed and didn't even know all this was going on less than 20 miles from my home. Life is strange!

  22. I've never liked DiCaprio, either. I didn't like him in Titanic, or anything else he has been in, and as a matter of fact, I just avoid things he is in at this point. I do admit to kind-of liking his acceptance speech though.
