Poor people all over India found TVs to huddle around so they could watch Slumdog Millionaire win Best Picture. And then they celebrated. Uh...why, exactly? Cause some movie that's sort of about them was given a bunch of meaningless awards in a theater full of people who make more in a second than they will see in ten lifetimes? I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but you guys are still gonna be poor and wretched. Plus...it isn't even that good of a movie. It's fine for a few yuks I guess, but...maybe I'm just cynical but was I the only one who found the whole premise kind of a crock? Guy rises up from the slums by winning millions on a game show. Sure, inspiring...except that he doesn't really know anything, it's just lucky coincidence that the questions happen to be about things he's up on. Basically, the message of this movie is, if you want to better your lot, go to Vegas and bet everything you have - cause only blind chance can rescue you from your dismal circumstances (hard work and shrewd angle-playing are for suckers). And don't give me any of that crap about fate. Only fools believe in fate. The dude gets over by luck in that movie...that is the only rational, non-polluted-with-mystical-bullshit way of looking at it. (I know what someone will say: He was only on the show because he wanted the girl to see him. He showed perseverence and a loving nature and the cosmos rewarded him with dough. Um, fine, if you buy into that kind of happy crappy. I don't.)

I completely agree. It's just another meaningless movie that won another meaningless award. There are much more important things in life than Hollywood!
Movies are suppose to be escapesist entertainment . Slumdog works on this level. people in the west ie white people dont get it.
This might be short-sighted but to me,
India = Outsourcing
Eh, give em their small victory. These are people who build houses made out of shit.
Build houses out of shit and then eat with their unwashed hands.
Yes, there are more important things in life than Hollywood, but this is the Oscars. Meaningless movies and awards, that's what it is about. The point is that a great movie won. Its not supposed to be "real" necessarily. He wasn't on the millionaire show for money, it was about love for him and yes, it was luck, but that was the point! I'm happy for India to have there moment of recognition. If you don't get, don't knock it. Anon 6:20 got it right.
The movie wasn't that great. It was good Wall-e was so much better. Hollywood has permeated every aspect of our lives. Even the political conventions of last summer were turned into film festivals.
We can get the meaningless movie, we just don't want it, Anonymous ass at 6:20. What amazes me is that the world complains about American Imperialism and our wasteful lifestyle yet they crave American Entertainment awards. The Ledgers behave abominably over the award that their overrated son won because he was dead. That performance was so over the top it made me laugh.
OMG on what planet is WallE a better movie then SlumDog?
EARTH!
happy crappy crab-ass
Crabbie is totally correct. It's sad that these Indians need validation from an American movie award.
Any film not made in the US that won as many Oscars would be just as celebrated, only difference being that it might take a more highbrow form. Dinners, gala's, clubs and more awards, instead of jubilation in the streets.
Those 2 small kids from that shanty town must who got to be 'in a movie' and all the perks that went with it must feel as if its a fairtale. And to their meager existences it has been.
You don't have to knock an entire culture because you don't understand it.
6:20 & 8:06 have the right end of the stick, it's suppose to entertainment, escapism, a couple hours that divert your attentions. Not unlike these blogs.
Oh and 8:56 & 10:41, sorry i don't agree, WallE was dead boring. It presented itself as an animation to haul in the audiences, and aimed to teach a global lesson on what we're doing to this planet, it tried to slip art house thought provoking in under the inevitable billion dollar marketing line. It fell short in a huge way, and all it raised was the need to nap.
In the end this movie will be forgotten just like the other lame best picture winers. Time will prove that this was a flash in the pan movie. Nothing to it.
They won by copying a game show like they copy most of the things they come up with whether it be music or movies, and that shows a serious lack of creativity. Why are most of their movies about boy meets girl but boys can't have girl ? It's getting old !
