But Michelle should not have curtsied to the Queen. Yes, it's good manners, for a private citizen. But the United States, whom she is representing, does not bow/curtsey to anyone, least of all the head of state of the country we fought the Revolutionary War against. Rant over.
All the news over here is going nuts that John Howard got in trouble for putting his hand on the queen. Who wouldn't want to make an international incident if Little Johnny touched them?
Mary your wrong, she is indeed required to curtsy in front of royality. And there was such a titter about her putting an arm around Her Majesty, that the Queen released a statement shortly afterwards that she wasn't offended etc, which was very gracious & sensitive to the publics reactions of her i thought.
4:19, you do know that Queen Elizabeth was a mechanic during ww2 right? She's a tough old bird and i like her.
Michelle is probably the only person alive who could get away with the arm around the Queen. We don't, as Mary said, bow or scrape to anyone with a title or anyone at all for that matter. Oh, I am just breaking out in red, white and blue here. No, seriously, I love Michelle. She is who she is.
Tia you are grossly uninformed when it comes to general decorum governing behavior in polite society let alone Royal protocol.
Walking from place A to place B or down a greeting carpet, amoungst "countless Briton's" as you put it, is not the same thing as being formally presented to the Queen, or any Royal for that matter.
You can't shake the Queen's hand unless she offer's first, and then you can not grasp her hand only a short light touch under her fingers. You can not turn you back to the Queen, you can not continue to eat a meal if she's finished. And hundreds of other Royal protocol's that expected to be met.
This is the reason why the First Lady putting her arm around her was turned into such a big deal. The Queen is not "casual".
Maybe for you her close american buddy she makes exceptions.
i do know royal protocal and have several boooks on it...
if you are a foreign head of state not in the commonwealth you are not required to bow or curtsey to the Queen....
you are correct with the handshaking, it's not a shake, just a light touch....
re: finishing when she is done...if it is a state banquet, she tries to make sure she eats at a moderate pace---Queen Victoria would gulp her food---so that most people finish their food before the next course is served...they have a series of lights in the banquet hall and when she puts her fork down they change the light and the footman take away that course and then others serve the next....
when her Uncle, the Duke of Glouchester was still alive (her father's brother, not the current Duke) he had parkinson's and she would eat very slowly so that he could eat...
from what i have read about this arm thing, apparently the Queen put her arm around Michelle first....so would it not have been rude of Michelle to not do the same to the Queen??
6.50 is right. I'm British and have shook the Queen's hand before (it is more like a light touch of the finger tips and she extended her hand first) and I curtsied. This is a big deal because the Queen is never so casual with even with close friends let alone foreign heads of state and their wives. And sure, foreign heads of state might not have to but they almost certainly almost always oblige. Usually when you are in another country you follow their customs out of respect.
I think it is a great gesture but honestly Miss Tia is being a bit of a royalfamilyophile. You don't know the sentiments of the British people or how we might react to something like this. Have you even been to England?
Just because you have read several books on royal protocal doesn't make you an expert.
Mmmmkay..."Royal" protocol, eh? Very stiff upper lip and all that rot! Yes, quite!
I guess a high five or fist bump might be too much, though, right Michelle? Of course, THE (former) JUNIOR SENATOR from Illinois doesn't know much about this foreign relations stuff. !
7:40 no one is making a big deal out of it, I think most people are quite pleased with Her Majesty's reaction to the extreme causualness of the visiting American's.
What people are reacting to is tia. How do you read all this and not have figured that out?
It's not just Michelle hugging, the Queen is hugging back. So if Michelle was doing wrong, so was the Queen.....anyway, it's nice to see them acting like real people. Go Michelle, heal some of the bad relations in the world. Act like a human being and ignore the criticism from the cheap seats.
You're right were all still applying Preparation-H from that fucker Bush.... Michele's behavior with the Queen was first class!! She's a great lady and the Queen is a cutie too!
Don't misunderstand me. I think Michelle is great, and her spontaneous arm around the Queen shows how down-to-earth and warm she is. LOVE it!!! The fellow she's with isn't bad either!! ;)
Not surprised. The Obama administration has proven to be a far-reaching, ideologically driven and amateurish at best. From his cabinet picks to the handling of the economy has galvanized conservatives across the nation. Next (congerssional) elections will be interesting.
Have you seen the video of obama bowing very deeply to the saudi king? It was a meet and greet after the G20 summit. It's on youtube and michellemalkin.com Does anyone find it disturbing obama is bowing to the saudi king, he shouldn't be bowing to anyone especially him.
...when in Rome, etc. etc. Of course anyone visiting GB or anywhere else should follow the decorum of the visited country. Miss Tia, sometimes I tire from your tirades.
Palace spokespeople are saying that there was no breach of protocol because they were told to say so, just as they are told to say everything else they say publicly.
There probably were at least some raised eyebrows at such a glaring gaffe. The Queen returning the arm around the waist doesn't mean it was OK to touch her. Just as Queen Victoria immediately drank the contents of her finger bowl when a visiting foreigner mistakenly drank his, Queen Elizabeth wouldn't make a public thing of the First Lady's mistake.
I can't understand the Obama's utter lack of correct protocol. You don't touch the Queen and you don't bow to the King of Saudi Arabia - even I know that. They are either not being properly briefed beforehand, or they are too arrogant and / or clueless to take it on board - either way, it's not good.

I wonder if the Queen knows how much Americans love her?

omg, reading the comments on that link you posted made me crack up...
"Ok…an iPod?WTF….the Queen probably doesn’t listen to anything else bedsides bagpipes."
hahahaha. Yep, of course the old gal only likes bagpipes...come on!!!

it is not required to curtsey for the Queen...she meets countless Britons every day who do not curtsey for her....
foreign heads of state, especially those that do not fall within the commonwealth, are under no obligation to curtsey or bow to the Queen...
of all i have read on the Royal family, i have never read anything about the Queen being offended by someone not curtseying to her...
oh, the Queen enjoys show tunes, especially from the late 30's, 40's and 50's...also Duke Ellington...

Anonymous @ 1:50: - I was outvoted. Unfortunately, that's the price I pay to live in a democracy.

He got rid of cap and trade last night!! Real tranparency! How is he gonna pay for the programs now? more taxes!
