The mailbox garden is getting pretty now. It was one of the hardest areas to clean up, it took me a long time. Mom had tried to garden there years ago, putting in perrenials that didn't belong there, like Goldenrod (OMG) and Yucca (yuk) then it became a junk area. Kids and people walking by threw their trash in it and weeds sprung up 10 foot tall. The mail person hated her. Mom also thought big blocks of broken cement were rocks and they were so big I had to leave some of them. Just another stupid thing. Then to top it all off, she thought carpet was mulch and would kill the big weeds. It didn't, the weeds grew through the carpet and the whole things was such a bizarre mess it took me month to clean it out. I did find a few flowers struggling in there and I added a few more. Now the ditch lilies have taken over the box and the rest is getting pretty too. *
I had some Lilliputian seeds I threw in there and at first I was unimpressed. Who'd really want Zinnia's that aren't big? But, now they're blooming in the Iris's foliage (the Iris are long done) and they are as tall as the regular Zinnia, but, their blooms are small, round and intense. I really like them there. That thing in the middle is a volunteer Walnut tree that sprang up this Spring and is now 5 foot tall. It's growing in a great spot. The city claims the curb belongs to them, even though they won't build us sidewalks here. Assholes. So if it gets to be a problem, it's not my problem. Maybe I should leave it there. That would change the garden though, so I'm still thinking on it. That's my neighbors house. They never plant anything. I don't know why. Maybe they know their kids and dogs would destroy it. But, their kids have a hidey spot over here, in the Pines and Forsythia, that they play in and have secret meetings. I made sure I kept it when I cleaned the fence row up.

Can you find petrified wood in your area? They make excellent garden ornaments! They are heavier than concrete though. My husband works at a gravel pit and sometimes comes across a piece of petrified wood, and also agates. We have a little random corner where he puts them...they show in the winter. It's covered by the summer weeds now, but, I like it when it shows.

Meissa..petrified wood? Maybe a rare find down at the river. I love agates though. I have a big one I've drug around with me for 30 years. It sits outside my door. I found it in a field.
