Here in Ireland, Halloween is known as Oíche Shamhna or "Night of Samhain". Samhain (pronounced "sow-un") is derived from the old Irish word Samain meaning "summers end". Interestingly enough, the Irish for November is Samhain, which I know doesn't make sense since Halloween is in October, but there you go. The Irish for October is Deireadh Fómhair (pronounced "derrah-fore"), meaning "the end of Autumn".

Concepta, Samhain is Pagan new years eve. Pagan new year is Novemeber 1st. Makes sense to me.

I have Wiccan friends and we always attend their Samhain circle. It's a beautiful ritual done outside with a huge bonfire. Everyone brings something for the feast afterwards and then some food is left outside as an offering to the deities and woodland friends. Very natural and refreshing.
No threats of punishments or requests for cash. Just simple appreciation and honoring of the natural world around us.
I always walk away feeling lighter and somehow more connected to the world I live in.
Even though we aren't Wiccan, Pagan or anything else, the group treats us like old and valued friends. A really lifegiving community of kind souls.

Long time ago, didnt the new year end when the crops were harvested? Not on Dec 31 as it does now? So, Oct/Nov would actually signal the end of the year. You guys are right-on with this. This is just ancient time tables that kids dont get taught about anymore, as far as I know. Thats why if Jesus was actually born in December it wouldnt make sense. He was born in October according to ancient calendars. If you choose to believe in him. I believe he existed, not that he was sent from heaven and his mother was a virgin, yea, thats gonna happen! But the shepherds do not herd sheep in the fields in December in Juresalem, according to legend thats what was going on when he was born. Their seasons in that part of the world coinside with ours. They have winter. It WAS the end of the year, but back then it fell in the autumn, not in the dead of winter. Crops harvest was the end of the year. Kids now dont know anything. Thankfully waaaay before the bible, man was keeping records. And thats the history I believe & the proof of science. Not made up fairytales. This was an enlightening post Pat. Looking fwd to more as the season draws closer. My fav time of year.
BTW-its only going to get up to 70 here tmrw! Cool weekend. Looks like fall is coming soon!

Interesting about Jesus, yeah, I've read that too. All Christian holiday dates were choosen because they are Pagan holidays. They didn't want to confuse the poor Pagan majority when they forced God on them. Mary became the Goddess replacement.

So true Pat. The Catholic church set the dates for the "christian" holidays, back when the pope was still going around killing people that didnt wanna believe the Catholic church or follow its reign. They matched the dates up with stuff already being celebrated so as not to upset the herd. The uneducated were still able to do their thing w/o even being Catholic. But it seemed like a church mandate to the believers, only it was a lame church ruling to attach itself to something in place for thousands of years already. So weak & lame. They didnt do shit. Just killed people that hated them.
