Snake bit

I just got bitten by a snake. I was mowing and I got to Mom's yard and those damn cats were on something so I shut off the mower to go see what they were up to. They were torturing a small ribbon snake about a foot long. I was so mad, that's why I don't care for cats so much, they don't kill to eat, they just torture things for fun. I ran them off and picked up the snake, but, it was so angry and scared, it bit me. I've never been bitten by a snake, but, I understand it's confusion. It didn't hurt, so I let it do it again so I could watch it. Garter snakes can flare like a cobra, but, this one didn't. It was too exhausted to show off. It would rear it's head back and stike lightening quick and slam itself into my hand. Then it would twist and turn it's body to seek a better hold. Not only was it not painful, but, it didn't even leave a mark. It kind of felt like being lightly slapped with velcro. I looked in his mouth and he had these tiny leathery ridges instead of teeth. The poor things are really defenseless except for their speed. I put him in the garden where the cats are not allowed. He seemed very glad to go..I'm sure he thought it was his last day on Earth. I really am tired of these cats, it's time to trap some more and haul them to the farm so other critters have a chance.

How do you keep the cats out of the garden?

I tell them once, then they get it with the hose. They learn.

Pat, I freaked out when I saw that snake biting your finger.... I'd have had a heart attack followed by a total hysteria episode, turned into a basket case ready for the looney bin. Arghhhhh I'm still with goose bumps.

must be snake week...did you see the pic I posted of the snake that was in our front yard? Almost bit Angus. This WAS NOT a garter snake, this was like 3ft long, with big nasty fangs and he was pissy. it was not a fun experience at all.

glad you weren't hurt

I would have flipped my shit. I don't mind snakes at all to look at from afar. That is a bit too close for my comfort.
Biz,
How did you make the snake go away?

He is a pretty little thing. Do you know what kind of snake he is related to? We used to have a corn snake and the markings look similar except ours was orange and red. One day I came home and the babysitter was sitting out on the back porch. When she heard me she stuck her head in the door and told me the snake was out and she was not comming back in until I found him. He bit me a couple of different times but he really didn't have much to work with. Once he got out and was gone for 6 months. I found him in the garage when I was looking for a screwdriver. I was glad to see him but he did scare the shit out of me when he suddenly moved on top of the workbench. I am not afraid of much but I hate being surprised.

Nissa, let's just say my husband *took care* of it. It wasn't how I would've preferred to handle it but it really was a scary situation and with a little one and the dog, my husband thought it was too dangerous to hope it leaves.

DD, you kill me. I could not under any circumstances pick up a snake, let alone allow it to bit me...ugh...shiver...cringe.

That is a cool pick :) I'm surprised it merely felt like velcro, he's a cutie :D

I don't think this is the actual snake. Is it?

wow, that's one hell of a picture! Snakes are pretty cool, they just want to be as far away from us as we are of them! My cat caught one once and got bitten on the ear. He didn't think much of that, had a teeny tooth in his ear for his trouble. I let the snake go after I let the little boy next door check it out. He was totally psyched, his mom got the willies, lol!

You are my personal hero. You not only didn't freak out, you actually managed to take a picture! Wow!!

I don't think that is "The" snake... my mom has long pretty nails. :)

but I could be wrong...

That's exactly how I feel about cats. They don't relate to people in a way I can understand.

That's orinalimo's photo. I couldn't take a photo, hold the snake and get bit at the same time. It was a red ribbon snake that bit me. That person has some dirty nails, man! I have to go look at Biz's snake.

Biz, I looked at your snake, but, couldn't see his head good enough. He looks like a typical pissy bullsnake to me, but, if your hubby saw fangs (and venom holes) then you had yourself a cotton mouth (water moccasin.) Either way, with a baby around it's best to get rid of it. They're both territorial.

AWWWW, I love the fact that you let the little fellow go. He'll probably return the favor and eat up bugs in onr of your gardens.

I am onboard with whatever Biz's hubs did to the poisonous guy though. I wouldn't want to take a chance with my pups or kids either. Sometimes they're just not bright enough to go away.

I just got a better look at Biz's snake. Constricted neck..cotton mouth. Dangerous boogers.

Thanks DD. Sorry about the pic quality, it happened so fast and I only had my phone to snap a quick pic.
