I know this woman who gets off on insulting me and trying to make it sound like a compliment. The last time I saw her, she said "That necklace is so cute on you." Which was fine until she added "I can't wear cheap jewelry, I have sensitive skin." Sigh. First of all, it wasn't cheap. It was costume jewelry, but, vintage Bakelite. I happen to like costume jewelry and have no problem wearing stuff from the dollar store if I like it. This particular woman always has something insulting to say to me and she irritates me to no end. She always points out that the necklace she always wears is a real diamond. It looks like that thing up there, which is Kate Gosselin's. She always wears that thing. They act like it's the friggin' Hope diamond. Or that fuck all thing from the Titanic. Do they honestly think no one else could save up and blow a few hundred bucks on those things? Yeah, they're so fucking rare. They're in every Wal-Mart flyer. When I see those diamonds on those delicate chains, I think you have to be a teen with your first real jewel or someone who's scared to buck a trend. If you wear one for sentimental reasons, then I get it. Otherwise it looks like you're scared to death to be different. I know I'm going to see that bitch today and I'd like to wear a hubcap, but, I'll settle for the biggest junk I have. If I've offended anyone, I'm sorry, but, that's how I feel. As for the bitch, I can smile, because she has to pay me to talk to her.Wednesday, September 2, 2009
Underhanded compliments, blatent insults

THAT itty bitty thing is for teenagers. Real women dont wear things like that. Thats a sweetheart gift from a boyfriend in the 11th grade for crissakes! Too bad you can't insult her too. If you can find the words you should. Backhanded is her style! Learn from her. Just say it. "Is that your daughters necklace?" Its cute for a teenager isnt it?" Now, thats not a dis, exactly. She wont say anything. No comeback will she utter.

LOL. I like that. "It's cute for a teenager."
anon,
Perfect return! I did give my daughter one similar to that on her 16th B-day.
I love to see interesting jewlry though. The bigger and more different the better. I don't wear much myself though. I love hand-made stuff that some of my artist buddies make.
You could even say, my 5 (not sure how old Lissa is) year old granddaughter has one identical to that.
Or, you could say, 'Yeah, I just saw that exact one at the thrift store (or dollar store, garage sale, etc.)
Also tell her she looks pretty. TODAY.
Got to add in that "today" to insinuate that every other day she looks like crap.
You guys are great! LMAO! I love the comments. We are all capabale of being a smartass bitch, eh? I particulary loved anon 3:52!!! hahah...she wont be able to say a damn thing back to you! And be sure to say it with a smile! Thats really being a nice smartass/bitch!

What a bitch. I can't stand people like that and I don't let them get away with it. My husband says I have a big mouth but I think I just have my own opinion and have no problems letting other people know it.
LOL Snark.. I like that one.
Wow, I really like all of these come-backs! I need all of you with me when I visit my MIL.
I have a big jewelry box o' diamonds that I never wear. It all belonged to my Mom and my Grandmom, and I inherited them. Every few months or so, I lay it all out on my bed and look at them for a while. Then, back in the box they go.
My favorite jewelry is the cheap pieces that I make myself.
People who say things like that are hopelessly insecure and are only trying to get a leg up on you any way they can.
If I were you, I'd start dressing progressively crazier each time you see her.
I have a standard answer for those kinds of comments.
"What a great outfit. I swear you shop at the best yard sales."
Keep in mind, that I enjoy yard sale-ing and I only say this because the sort of person who usually makes such a back-handed comment would be highly offended at the implication that they shopped at a yard sale.
If that is a diamond kate is wearing. Its stupid and tiny and its not rare. Cubic zirconia is better to wear. Its not made out of carbon. Carbon will burn in a fire. Cubic zirconia will not burn.
Well you're automatically superior to anyone who's such a skank, so keep on acting with integrity (at work, anyway).
I don't buy diamonds since I read about mining them around 12 years ago. Don't care, since as you said, I'm wayyy past feeling special due to the jewelry I own.
hey,i know what you mean... i read your story after i had that incident tonight... from my friend's boyfriend trying to cut me down about my bf ...
i was trying to find other people to relate to...
i figured that yeah they are insecure... and that they see you as a threat to them... you are secure in who you are...
i admire that...
thanks for posting it helps to other people... esp me.
