Halloweenish picture, when they get big like this one, they shake their web when you get too close. They can really get it swinging back and forth with some surprising power. I see there's a lot of these in the Marigolds and they set up house about 2 feet apart and keep to their own territiory. I like to watch them because they're so big you can see what they're up to. That's a pretty cool web and it's really strong too, kind of amazing. This is a big one. The flowers are huge this year too. These Garden Spiders get to golf ball size, not counting their legs. You can click it to see the web construction better. You can't buy that decoration at Wal-Mart!Thursday, September 3, 2009

That web is amazing. I love the zig-zag stitch they do to make repairs. I'm scared of them but could sit and watch them all day.
Do they ever wander in the house?
I sure wish I hadn't clicked that picture. That spider is enormous! I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing there were spiders that big in my garden. One night I saw a little one running across the living room floor and I was standing up on the couch screaming my head off. Hubby thought I'd lost my mind. Couldn't find it that night and thus I didn't get a wink of sleep worrying that it was going to crawl in bed with me. The following morning I tore the living room apart until I found it. I hate and I mean HATE spiders.
No, Garden Spiders hate being inside. They don't even take cover in the rain. The wolf spider come in though, there's a lot of them. I'm not scared of them, but, I don't like them in the house.
I'm scared shitless of crickets. They fuck with me bad. HATE them.
Dirty bastard cocksucker barnyard cockroach crickets. When the Garden spiders catch a cricket I cheer for them. "Take that, you sreeching bastard!"
Gosh dd I got a big spider like that on my deck
right now.
I got bit by a cricket when I was a kid. I avoid them now. If they get in the house, they do NOT get the patient, paper cup save. I go straight for the hairspray and paper towel routine.
Hairspay is awesome, freezes those little suckers right in their tracks. I never use it on my hair! I also hairspray yellow jackets, wasps and hornets.
DD I just took a photo of my spider friend and
emailed it to you please look at him and see
if u recognize the type he has a stripey pattern
and is rather large. But all he does is hangs out
on my deck. Thank you DD :)
That was me kiki not anonymous I posted to quickly.
Nina hi I was wondering why do u spray the
cricket with hairspray ? Are all pesticides
banned in your area too ? Kiki :)
Wow !!! Nina that's a great idea I will get the
yellow jackets with it next time they bug me.
So it renders them powerless and they can't fly
at you I'm so glad you shared that tip just wish
I knew it at the start of the summer I had a bit
of a problem with wasps and yellow jackets eating
into the wood of my deck. Paper wasps were
attaching a small hive to the underside of the
wood floor posts. Glad that it's gone now.
Now I gotta go buy me some hairspray. Here's something else that works... window cleaner kills flies. They buzz around the glass so it's actually a 2-fer. I kill the flies and get the windows clean at the same time.
Kiki,
I use the freeze-spray because it stops them instantly. I use a lot less product. I only use it if one strays inside. We live right on the water so the bees leave my decks alone. Every so oftern one wanders in or gets in the car.
With pesticide they still fly around for a bit. Plus, I hate the smell of bug-spray. The Aussi-freeze smells pretty!
Matilda,
THAT'S brillant! A 2-fer! Gotta love it!
I have some Aussie freeze! Gonna try that, you sure can't use it on your hair. The shit is like cement. I have a severe wasp allergy.
Kiki, that's some spider. I made it a post.
Thanks Nina Its on my shopping list. Youre right
the beespray is stinky but also very poisonous !
The hairspray can't be that toxic as the DDT in
insecticides. Hey your the Nina that I talk to
a few weeks back when we had the storms.
Hi there Nina :) & thanks for the tip.
Matilda thanks for the tip about the windex
and the giggle I can picture myself killing
house flies and washing the window at the same time.
I guess the amonia is toxic to their membranes
of the flies outer cortex. I love windex. I have
OCD and it's my best friend. My youngest child
is actually afraid of it I am constantly cleaning
all the surfaces of my house. It's great for the
glass stove top elements but wait unroll they cool down.
I use a natura cloth no residue or streaks and it's
washable too icydk they sell them at home depot.
I loved your website before, but now it rocks. You have the best pictures and comments. Keep doing what your doing!!
Even though I hate the look of spiders, they get the paper cup save in my house too. They eat ants and flys so they are ok in my book. Spiders and ladybugs are about the only things that get a save if they get inside. I hate centipedes (thousand leggers), earwigs, silverfish and water bugs. I can't help it, they get squished.
I've been using hairspray for years to kill trespassing bugs. I usually keep a can of Aquanet I get for a buck at the dollar store around just for that purpose.
Nina, yes they do bite. I'm glad you said that. People don't understand why I hate them so much. Crickets will bite, they jump on you, they're fat ugly barnyard roaches, they tear the shit out of your fabrics, they sreech all night long and they bite. Disgusting. I hate them.
