Beware

It's Friday the 13th, which is lucky for me. I like the number 13, it's my lucky number. Are you superstitious? What do you avoid? Would you walk under a ladder? Break a mirror and not give it another thought? Cross a path behind a black cat? Do you carry a rabbits foot? I never understood that one, the rabbit sure wasn't very lucky. But, most everybody has a good luck charm they carry..what's yours?

Tuesday October 13th was the real bad day for knights templar.

I thank God every day as soon as I wake up and the moment I see the sun outside, and the second my head meets the pillow. I am not kidding or trying to start anything here. This really is my "feel safe" whatever you call it. It is not a routine because I mean it, and I don't ask for anything when I do. Just thanks for still being in one piece and relatively pain free. It all started when not all of us would make it back every day.

Be thankful if you don't need faith in your life.

I was born on the thirteenth and I like the number very much. I have no superstitions whatsoever. Mostly I find them amusing and I am intrigued when I meet someone who actually alters their behavior due to superstitions. Sometimes I find them tiresome. Like when I'm on an elevator and the building has no "thirteenth" floor. Who are they kidding?

You are going to laugh at my lucky charm.

Back in the mid 90s, somebody bought my Oldest a necklace. It is a metal cross (no decoration on it or religious symbol) with black cording.
She didnt like it (she was young) but for some reason I did.
It has been hanging off the mirror of every car I have ever driven.
I have never had an accident, fender bender, or any ticket in a car that has that cross hanging from it.
And when we get a new car (yeah right..some day) that cross will go in the new car!

Jarhead, you always give me food for thought.

No 13th floor cracks me up too, Frim. Who ARE they kidding? The lost 13th floors are the alternate universe, I guess.

I lost my pregnancy on Friday the 13th. I remember my ex-husband and I were scheduling an ultrasound of our daughter. It was going to be the Tuesday after Friday the 13th. The ex made a comment, "oh, it's the week after Friday the 13th." I got a cold feeling and asked him not to talk about the pregnancy and Friday the 13th. I started spotting on Friday the 13th and hemorrhaged. I lost the baby and I almost bled out.

I chose not to avoid the number 13, I wasn't superstitious about it before the miscarriage. I didn't even realize it was today until I read it here.

3 yrs later and I miss the baby girl I almost had. It some cultures 13 is a lucky number. You would be surprised how many times I get the number 13 appearing in my life now.

I more of a karma person myself. Superstitious dont bother me. I think they are just for little kids imaginations. Step on a crack brake your mothers back kind of stuff.

I carry a stone I found one day on my favorite rock on the beach. I felt it was sort of a gift left by my, thinking stone" to carry around all the time. I have had that stone in a pocket or purse for over 20 years.

I also like the number 13. Always have. I had 2 of my 4 kids on Friday, 13th and they're both doing fine!

When I was a little girl I used to actively avoid stepping on cracks so I wouldn't break my Mother's back because I love her so much. I still do it if it crosses my mind but I have to pump the brakes because I can get a little obsessive about things, even ridiculous things, if I'm not careful.

I like that jarhead. There's nothing wrong with being thankful with the status quo if the status quo is A-OK.

this is kinda stupid to say (or write ) out loud, but I'm superstitious when it comes to my favorite football team. If I wear a different jersey or if I'm not watching the game I feel as though I could jinx it. I know, retarded.

Elizabeth, so sorry for your loss.

A black cat just appeared on my back porch. I have never seen it before. If I was superstitious then I'd be spooked. I actually consider 13 a lucky number as well and was born on that day.

Nina, I carry stones too. And a green guitar pick.

Pat,
My son carries a green guitar pick in his wallet as well. It was his fathers who passed away when he was six years old.
I am not really superstitious. I have never been afraid of Friday the 13th. Other than the movie ones. ha

I was 13 on Friday the 13th and I had a great day. I love the number 13 and I've always felt it was mine, since no one else liked it...:)

My ex and I got married on Friday the 13th. I know we're not together anymore but it wasn't due to bad luck.

He would always buy me a little present every Friday the 13th. He was very sweet...I screwed that up.

I also have a black cat named Patrick. He is the smartest cat I have ever known. He comes when you call him, he runs to the front door when somebody knocks. Maybe he thinks he's a dog.

When a black cat crosses my friends path she drives around the block 3 times. Not sure why that helps but she is very superstitious.

I am not...I like that kind of stuff.

I was born on July 13th. Which of course will sometimes fall on a Friday. It's nothing, no big deal. I have a small black cat cross in front of me all the time at the same spot. I don't turn around. I don't have time for that! Thats almost a disease to be so crippled by superstitions. Live your life, be thankful for what you have & always be kind to others. You can't regret a day like that ever. My life is full of it's bad luck everyday. I can't blame it on a date on the calendar. 13 is my lucky number I guess, it's my birthday!!

Pat,
I have a really weird affinity for rocks and water. We visited Stone Henge years back when you could still get near the monoliths and I was all but hypnotized by just touching them. I don't even know why. It was weird but really nice. Maybe I was a rock in a past life and I'm looking for family...

Dirty Disher said...

Nina, you're so lucky to have actually seen Stone Henge. It fascinates me too. I just know it holds real magic. Are you saying people aren't allowed near the monoliths now??

Thank you Kiki.

My only superstion, is to knock on wood whenever I say something that tempts fate..like, everything is going so well..nothing bad can happen..yea that is asking for trouble. I beleive in karma, too..everything eventually come round again.

I carry in my car an old Rosary my great-grandma gave me when I was 8, for my First Communion. More than the 'religious' significance, it's the sentimental value of it. I freak out when I misplace it, it feels like everything is gonna go wrong if I don't find it. I feel she is with me when I have it and I feel protected by her love. It lives in my car.

Nina said...

Pat,
From what I've heard they fenced it off and patrol the area of the monoliths now because folks were going in and defacing them.

I guess folks had done some, Druid-like rituals and animal sacrafices as well.

coffeebean said...

I went to Stone Henge about 5 years ago. I had to apply to go inside the circle and touch the stones. The historical society said that they were trying to limit the damage to the grass from walking on it. It was so worth it to go inside and touch the stones. There is something special about that place.

no, I am not. Friday 13 is just another day.
I do not care about black cats. Not stepping under ladders has nothing to do with superstition and everything with workplace safety.
