The weather here has been pretty nice in the last week or so. Occasionally a little rainy, but for the most part sunny with a rare cloud, the daffodils and crocus are blooming, the lawn is mud/green, and a brisk breeze is blowing. I hope it lasts a little longer.
Today I am going to clean out the brooder and get it set up. I went to one of the local feed stores and looked at chicks but didn't buy any. Wednesday I will go to a farm store in Portland and buy most of what I will get for my second flock. It's driving me a little crazy because I thought I knew what I wanted, but am having such a difficult time deciding on exactly which breeds to buy. I am limited on space, and my husband doesn't want many (or any) more, but I do, and so I have to make that decision for myself. Bear in mind that I have a "wish list" of about 15 to 20 breeds I would like to have, and only have six breeds so far, and the plan is to get six more chickens. My son doesn't want them, either, but I've just decided to do what I want. (And I want more chickens!!!)
Otherwise it's just more housecleaning, etc.
I hope that you are feeling better, Pat! I have been very concerned, as I think most here have been. Take it easy, and I hope your relatives leave you be.

Pat,

I got accepted to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) which is like Ivy League for art/design majors. I got accepted into the Architecture program. Will be going this fall after I graduate from SELU this spring with my bachelor's in design drafting. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The down side: It costs 30k per year to go there plus I will have to take out extra for an apartment and living expenses. They gave me a $6500 scholarship per year so far.

Could you send positive energy my way. I am submitting my portfolio this week and I need them to be impressed so they give me big money!

Much love,
Sole`

congrats Sole!!!!

Sole',

Congratulations! I'm about three hours from Savannah. What a beautiful place. We went for St. Patrick's Day a couple of years ago and it was crazy!

It's starting to feel like spring in SC, even if it's short lived. Yesterday it was in the high 60's. It rained this AM, but it's clearing up now and the sun is coming out. Unfortunately, I think it's supposed to cool down for the rest of the week.

Glad to hear you are feeling better DD.

Sole, that sounds very exciting. I have heard that SCAD is an excellent school. Congrats!

Nothing much happening here other than that it is snowing again. Like we didn't have enough! I need to go somewhere warm so that I can stick my feet in the sand and thaw out...

Sole` said...

Thank you all. I'm so very excited, just terrified of the price tag.

Sole` said...

On the other hand, back to the kitty, a picture fell off the wall a couple days ago and smacked my shoulder and then tumbled down to the ground and squished my cat's paw. He is ok, but was limping for a while. I was concerned because I had him declawed not that long ago. Luckily I still had some of his pain killers from that and gave him some so it wouldn't hurt anymore. He ran around the house high on whatever those drugs where. From the way he was acting I think the drug is like kitty lsd... He is so funny.

Anonymous said...

Sole', you should be afraid of SCAD's prices. I have a friend who finished there YEARS ago and is still drowning in debt from student loans. She did well in her studies there but could never find employment in her field. She has been a waitress all these many years.
Another friend's twin sons graduated from SCAD and work for Hanna-Barbera studios in Hollywood.
I guess it is all in the cards, good luck.

iambriezy said...

Congratulations Solé! That sounds so exciting and Savannah's such an amazing city.

We just got back from the doctor, Audrey has been itchy on her palms and feet all weekend...I was afraid she was allergic to the new puppy. Instead, they said it's Hand, Foot, Mouth (though her mouth isn't affected). According to the Dr, there's no treatment...it just needs to run it's course. Anyone familiar with this?

OOOh I see someone left the door open again marked at 2:28 and something small and slimy slithered in.

iambriezy, both my children have had h/f/m disease (called 5th disease too I think?). Nothing to it, it goes away after 5 days or so. It is pretty common to catch in daycare settings. And if she has no blisters in her mouth, she will be back to normal pretty soon. I had a friend whose daughter had really bad blisters in her mouth and it was tough to get her to drink or eat anything.

Peg said...

Iambriezy, Years ago my then 11 month old son came down with that only he did get it in his mouth. It was horrible. Inside his whole mouth was covered with these fever blisters. He couldn't eat for almost 11 days. It was horrible. Please be careful because it is contagious.

I just got finished snow blowing all the white crap that came down last night. They were predicting 5 - 10 inches but we only got about 4. The problem is a lot of it was mixed with rain so much of it is heavy slop.

Now I have to run to the store to pick up sauerkraut since the 2 stores I went to yesterday were out of it.
I'm making baked spare ribs and sauerkraut for dinner.

So, now that U R back DD ... how are things from Hollywood?

I was visiting a girlfriend one Summer a lot of years ago when her Dad came home. He went straight to the room in which we were, so I jumped out of the window with only a handful of clothes.

Her big ass dog chased me back into the room as soon as my feet hit the grass outside her window, so I was stuck in a similar position as the cat when her Father walked in.

Early Childhood Educator here.
HFM is pretty common in the winter, just have to let it run its course. Sores in the mouth are awful, we see a lot of kids come back a lighter than when they left. It is very contagious, but once you have it you become immune.

Fifth's disease is different from HFM, it is also known as "slapped cheek" since that is the main symptom. Once the symptoms appear you are no longer contagious, just like chicken pox. Most of us had it a children but never knew it as it wasn't a "big deal" back then, our mothers just brushed it off as a flushed face. There is no treatment and isn't harmful, unless you are pregnant, (especially the beginning and the end) it can cause complications such as anemia and difficult births. You can get tested to see if you are immune, I am, and I recommend it to all my co-workers of child bearing age get tested because you can't be around it til it has run it's course.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the very nice comments regarding my kids photo Dak and Shay and yes they are a handful but love every laugh.

Sole, I don't mean any disrespect to the SCAD-grad waitress, but some people are better at being students than they are at applying their skills to job hunting, which is a skill all its own. The advice to seek as many internships while you're still in school is good advice....and not just to learn the ropes of the profession, but also (and perhaps more importantly)to learn the skills needed for successful job hunting when the time comes. Good luck!

A-Gran said...

iambriezy, I'm glad your little one is feeling better.

Jarhead, don't leave us (proverbially) hanging. What happened? Did he catch you?

Anonymous said...

By popular request,

Kim's Father caught me hanging halfway out of the window with a bundle of clothes under one arm, but he was holding in his hands my shoes and shirt, which I had left on the couch in the living room.

He gave me a stare and pointed to the door without saying a word. I collected my clothes and walked out to the hallway (past Kim's Mom) and on to my motorcycle and rode home.

I felt bad for Kim having to face her Dad and Mom, but self-preservation won out and I hoofed it out in a hurry.

Valle;

Happy Birthday to your daughter, born on the anniversary of the raising of the 2nd flag in Iwo Jima!.

Kiki;

I was 17 years old and indeed lucky to escape intact. Her Dad was always nice to me, but under the circumstances his even temper could have easily boiled over.

Kim's Mom came over and had a talk with my Mom, but I was set to go to college (U.S. Naval Academy) later the same Summer, and so it all blew (no pun, ha, ha) by quickly and was forgotten.

Their dog was a menace though Bayou Jane. As soon as my feet hit grass on the other side of the window I could hear the dog cough out a bark and charge towards me. My only concern then was for keeping my wedding tackle intact and escaping those chompers in a hurry. He never gave me a chance to make my exit over the fence.

It snowed a bit this morning. I am in the middle of trying to spring clean but I am still feeling under the weather. I just go slow.

Today seems like a hot dinner day. Like soup, stew or chili. Something substantial like turkey or roast beef dinner.
I have a turkey breast but it is frozen solid and will never defrost enough for dinner tonite.
Soup I can do..Off to allrecipes.com to find something.

Hope you are on the mend Pat!

away from that cujo in the yard or you

this lil faux pas took place ? Do u still go out

To: iambriezy....

Are her palms and feet peeling? Did she have a slight fever that went away? There is a littlel known illness called "Kawasaky" and often goes undiagnosed, in the long run it can cause damage to the heart. How old is your child, usually kids don't get it after the age of 5-6.
A friend of mine is doing research on this illness since in the last few years it has become more common in PR. Ask your pediatrician about it, just in case ok....

Jarhead hi :) it's me again Kiki sorry to bother
you I hope u don't mind but I forgot to ask if
you are on Twitter ? Again I'm just curious.
Just in case a marine tweets me 1 day. Kiki :)

Hi Kiki,

Hard to believe it was 24 years ago!, I was 17 years old. I guess it must have been traumatic because I can still remember details of my mind racing to decide whether to stuff my clothes in the dog's mouth and run, or jump back over the window naked into the room and take my chances with Pa.

I am not on Twitter or any other social network. I post here and crabbie's and nowhere else. Pat's blog has helped me a lot to express personal pain from lost comrades.

Fishing will be back on this Spring when I get back. We catch Trout, redfish, and flounder right of my Mom's pier in Corpus Christi. Going offshore allows you to hook-up to just about any fish from snapper to sailfish.

Are you an angler kiki?.

iambriezy said...

Nadine...No peeling. Just red, itchy hive-like bumps on her palms and soles of her feet. I looked up Kawasaki's, and her symptoms don't seem to match. But thanks for the heads-up! I'll keep an eye out for any changes.

valle said...

wow Jarhead, I'm not math expert, but if my calculations are correct you about 40ish? You seem wise beyond your years!

OMG! Jarhead! You from Corpus? I lived there for over 10 years. Have family there. My son was born at Spohn Hospital right on the bay and my daughter was born in Corpus too. It's fabulous. I haven't been there in a long time. But next time you go, be sure to get some Kiko's Mexican Food for me & hit up ol' Ctafish Charlies too. See if they still have the old ET phone booth! I miss Corpus now. I caught a huge stingray out on my uncles island once. We had fresh fish for all our meals when we were out there. So fun. It was off South Padre, part of the National Seashore Park. You have fun fishing there!

Yup! I am 41 (will be 42 in June), Earth monkey for those into Chinese astrology. I graduated High School at 16 and lived in Europe for a couple of years, then college, the Marine Corps, War and Gov service. I fit in a lot of living in between, but sadly almost none of it around my family. All that will change this year.

Hi Rox!; I remember you mentioned being from C.C. It's great there, and you can't beat the fishing in the bays. I fish mostly Copano and Upper Matagorda bays.

Jarhead good afternoon I've been fishing
a few times but I wouldn't say I'm an angler.
However i'm not sure if you understood my ?
it ( fishing) was meant metephorically. Maybe

so cheekily ;) hmmmm I wonder which one it
really is ? I do hope I get a reply back to my

3-tiger
4-rabbit
5-dragon

8-sheep
9-monkey

11-dog
12-pig

I'm glad you post here at DDs I think you and
crabbie are the only male posters here it's nice
to meet and stop for a chat everyday or so
with people all over the globe. It's also nice that
DD s place provides you with a place to heal.
Writing is a theraputic medium. I'm on Twitter only
and use it sporadically under 777Kiki & I don't do

today Jarhead. I wonder if we could continue
posting/ talking on this almost abandoned thread
hmmm I will check back later& see ? Kiki :)

kiki;

I wondered if that was what you meant by fishing. Answer is not lately.

I've been lucky in that my brother is helping me right now during the due diligence period, but it leaves little chance for cheeky business, and I've been working on this project for a year consistently, but for five years during the planning phase and manufacturing, so my presence is required.

My social life is limited and I am literally on call 24/7 for now.

As soon as I am done here (Spring), my brother and I decided to go to Amsterdam for a couple of days and then go back home.

I'll check back as well kiki.

Wow. I can't believe how many of you checked back to the post!. There must have been curiosity over the number of posts.

CJ; I love Austria as well. I went to school in Krems, not far from Vienna. Back then it was a beautiful rural place with the nicest people. All the ladies baked bread and pastries for the kids going to school, and there was farmland that stretched out like paintings. The chocolates, and the horses is what I miss most since everyone I knew there has moved.

Now it's and industrial warehouse depot with housing for immigrant workers from India...or is that New Jersey?.

Salzburg is my favorite Austrian city now. I have never been to Switzerland, but I'm sure it's beautiful as well.

Bayou Jane;
Are you near the coast? My brother is looking at land near Houma and New Iberia. Aquaculture and fishing are his passions, and he has the crazy idea that I'll partner-up with him.

See y'all next post!

Skunkalpha is a military call sign for unidentified contacts on radar, it was my nickname because I once stumbled drunk and in my underwear out of a car and into Military Police guarding the gate on base. Since I did not have my ID, they called me Skunkalpha and entered me as such in the gate log. They took me to the brig until my buddies showed up with my clothes and ID card. The name stuck.
