Rednecks all over the Midwest make a little extra cash in the Spring by selling Morels to restaurants. Not any more. The state of Iowa passed a law that says you have to take a class at a university and get certified in Morel expertise to be able to sell them. And that costs money and most rednecks don't live any where near a university. This is the dumbest money grubbing law Iowa has come up with lately. There is NOTHING that looks like a Morel..they basically look like an ugly alien brain on a stem, but, they're delicious. There's a false Morel, which is a retarded name, because it looks like a bloody disgusting mess and nothing like a Morel. And they are not like, nor do they taste like any other fungus. Every kid in the Midwest knows how to spot a Morel. Lissa is 5 and she went Morel hunting last week. I am so sick of the government deciding people are stupid and charging them money for education they don't need and can't get. Fuck off Iowa. We don't need more dumb laws. "Oh, looky dad, (pointing at a barrel cactus) is that a Maple tree?" Sure son, let's tap it and get pancake syrup. Duh.

Yeah, pekerhead is another name for Morel. If you have Morels, you don't need steak. They are meaty and unique.
Looove Morels - with a creamy wine sauce, perfection.
I've never had them cooked in wine. I'll bet that's good. We always floured and fried them like a chop. Man, that's good eats.
Exactly! Floured up & cripsy fried. But gawd, it's so good with a steak. They really go together. But I do agree, you dont need a steak with them. Yum! We had a very bad season here however. Nobody was even talking about it. Used to be ppl would be sharing or bragging about the bucketfuls of them they find. Not this year. I am waiting for a wild blackberry patch down by the creek to fruit out. If I can beat the birds & critters to them! I will have a huge bucketful! If I can not roll down the hill into the creek! LOL!

You all are making me hungry now! LOL
Had several of them growing behind my shrubs last year. Guess I was dumb, gave them to a neighbor. I've never had Morels, so didn't know what I was missing. Now I'm going to check & see if they're back this year.
Nope, nothing there. But good thing I checked b/c one of my outside faucets is in that area and at the hose connection it was squirting all over. Had two guys here last week fixing a problem on my front porch. Now I wondering if one of them turned the hose on and didn't shut it off tight. Can't wait for my next water bill.
Was shopping this past weekend at the fancy grocery store, and morels were for sale, a small pack of maybe 7 mushrooms for $18.00.
We used to find them by the bushelful. They were wonderful.
CJ, Morels are odd like that. They'll just show up in your yard and then you never see them again. The spores travel, I guess.
Here in SW Virginia rednecks like my husband call them "dry land fish." It is a big deal to go dry land fish hunting.
I love wild mushrooms---some more that others. The best three days of my life was the night I hate some mushrroms. I think we scared the cows too! I was very happy!
The mushrooms around here are called oyster mushrooms and grow on the north side of a willow tree. If you cook them with beef, they taste better than the beef!
We had some morels here in our woods not too long ago. Not enough to do anything, but also they were past their picking time. I guess the spores came with something that got shipped in from another state, and the conditions were right this year in our woods.
Never heard of them but they sound really good. And I hate mushrooms. Before my hub and I were married and moved up north in pa. He use to go to West Virg to pick up mushrooms with he college buddies. Those were not ones you wanted to cook with.
We have something in the wild to that grows around here called leaks or ramps depending on what part of PA West Va Ny or Ohio you live in. They are wild onions. They are really good. I hope Pa doesn't past this law on this wild vegetable also.
