Urban chicken coop

Some smart guy thought up a solution for all those green going suburban new farmers..the portable chicken coop. It's cute and works..you can put it together with only a screwdriver. And he's charging $440.00 each! I know! OMG. Nice design though. There's a small door in back to collect eggs. You can move it around to give the hens a new pecking place everyday. It wouldn't work in cold climates, like Iowa though. Still, I like it for people who only want a hen or two. I'd make it a little longer.

There is a man down the bayou from me who makes these to sell. Ready to go--chickens, chickens feed, what ever you need! He also decorates them. The covers the complete coop so he paints the cover like the sky with clouds and somehow along the bottom, he has flowers and vines. They really are cute. And I noticed last week, he had built a larger one. Clever idea!

I think these are really clever, but who would have just one chicken?
These should be built to house at least 4 hens.
Christina - you're our chicken expert. Any thoughts?

In the article, there were two chickens in there. They shared.

You always want to have more than one hen. They are very social creatures and would be very lonely if left by themselves.
This is really called a "tractor". We have one, but it is about 4 feet by 8 feet or so. The top covered end of the A-frame is a nest box, and the bottom part under the nest box is for pecking in the grass under cover. The "Little Flockers" as my husband calls them, are in the tractor every day, and we move it to a different area of grass every morning, so that they can peck for fresh stuff and not have to be in their own droppings. I always have to water the old spot very heavily, or else my female dog, Mia, will munch "cookies" all morning. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, but, oh, man. . . her breath.

Having spent an unusually large amount of time observing them, yes, I think they do gather and bitch just like us.
There is always someone assigned to guard duty, too. Both flocks have a bird (responsibility seems to rotate) whose job it is to keep an eye on the back door of the house, from whence the "yummies" appear. The guard sounds the alarm (a series of "bok-boks" and head-bobbing) which serve to rally the flock instantaneously. I'm telling you, I hope our military bases have such alert sentries. . .

I've noticed they're social creatures and have friends and enemies. They chatter, hang out, warn each other and share nests. They also like people and are really cute pets.

DD you're ahead of the crowd.
Guess who just followed your lead and got a chicken coop to feed her starving children!
