Whoopie stands up for smokers

source
[Whoopie to Joy (buttcrack)] Nobody is coming near you [with cigarettes]… Don’t bitch about the problem if you don’t have an idea to solve it.
All these people said no you can’t smoke outside, can’t smoke inside, can’t smoke upstairs, can’t smoke anywhere. I think it’s bullsh*t.
I have been asking for a [designated place]… At the View, there is a designated place outside where we’re supposed to go and smoke. Now, because they don’t think that smokers are people, or have any feelings, or have any rights at all. It’s next to [a] dumpster. So you’re degrading people. So why not just say ‘you guys are scum and the scum of the earth’?
That’s how you make folks feel as opposed to saying ‘You know what, we know this is a tough thing to kick. So until you’re able to kick it, we want you to go over here and smoke.’ In a place where you don’t have to stand outside shivering or getting rained on because people think that you’re a bonehead because you smoke.
*
She's right. Non smokers can be the most irritating judgemental people on earth. Cigarettes are legal, but, smoking them anywhere is illegal. Go figure that out. They're up to $7 bucks a pack here and it's all tax which is why they're still legal. I am not suggesting I should be allowed to smoke in hospitals, schools and restaurants (though I remember when you could) but, where am I supposed to smoke? I light one up when I'm in my car in the grocery store parking lot and get shit from passerbys who have genius insights like, "That's bad for your health!" No shit, sherlock. Even my grand kid will wave her hand in front of her face and give me a nasty look when I light up and I yell, I'm outside, go somewhere else! If you don't like my smoke in the open air, get yourself out of my butt. Honestly. You can't even smoke in bars now. Or prisons. That's fricken crazy. I don't know how they stay in business. It's REALLY cute to see someone falling down drunk and right before they crawl behind the wheel of their vehicle, the yell at me that smoking is pollution. Yeah, thanks for the heads up, buddy. Watch out for that school bus full of kids, okay? Or don't bother because obviously I've doomed all of humanity with my nasty habit. BITE ME.

I had someone bitch at me for smoking outside a building in New York City. She was actually worried what a 10 second whiff of my smoke might do to her as she walked down a street choking on the exhaust of a million cars?

You gotta love non-smokers. Reformed smokers are the worst. People have no problem with people drinking, and yet people killed by drunk drivers are in the news all the time. I can smoke all I want and drive fine. I could go on and on.....I agree with Whoopi and Chrissy.

Oh yeah I hear it all the time. We're the last group of people that it's still politically correct to rag on and ostracize. Can't call a fat person fat anymore, can't call a black person a nigger. But smokers are fair game! I once had a guy come out to clean out the air ducts in the house. He saw my big glass ashtray sitting outside the door and made the comment "oh I see the nicotine addicts smoke outside at least". I told him, "yeah we smoke inside too, not that it's any of your business". He says "why bother cleaning your air ducts then, you obviously don't give a shit about your health." I responded by kicking him off my property and got another company to come clean the ducts out. Fuck you dumbass, your holier-than-thou attitude just cost you my business.

Meanwhile, you can't even smoke within 20 feet of a fucking bus stop in my town. A bus stop! A frigging bus stop, which is right next to a road, which is full of bus, truck and car exhaust! What utter fucking horseshit.

In some apartments and condos, people are trying to make it so that you can't even smoke in your own home. What the fuck ever, fuck off nanny state.

We have a clean act bill in PA. That if you are caught smoking near a establishment like hotel, hospital, mall, and etc. You will be fined 1,000.00 and so will the business. I have not seen anyone with a badge fining anyone.

On are rich cards that people sign in at the hotel. It clearly states that if you smoke in a non smoking room you will be fined 400.00. We are still 1 of the only hotels who has smoking rooms available. But not that many since the clear air started. We had to decrease that room type. Since everyone get so tired walking into stinky rooms.

I agree with Daphne nothing is worst than reformed smokers. They complain and harp more than anything. They tell you how allergic to smoke they are. How horrible it is to walk into it and etc.

Smokers should have rights to. They shouldn't be backlashed and treated like mutants. It their own bodies that they are talking about.

I so wish that every person who smokes could just quit. The government would be up shits creek without a paddle without our tax money. There too much money to be made off cigarettes. That's why they will never be made illegal. They are up to over 8 bucks a pack here.

I chuckle every time I drive by a hospital and see groups of folks dressed in scrubs puffing away. Hell, I've been known to walk by a few of them just to catch a whiff - I quit over 10 years ago but sometimes still get the urge. Would I ever say anything negative to any of them? No way! "Live and let live." It's a personal choice.

Nattie said...

That's your addiction talking. I used to talk like that when I had the habit.

I am a smoker and I wish I could quit and I can understand the no smoking rules for the most part. People generally refuse to police themselves so the government has to do it for them. I mean, remember when you could smoke in restaurants? Even as a smoker I would be offended when someone started blowing cigarette smoke in my face while I was trying to eat. But what I don't understand is the no smoking in bars. Around here, there are tons of privately owned, little neighborhood bars that don't serve food, don't allow children, and are staffed by smokers and you still can't smoke in them.
The other thing I hate is the no smoking hotels. When we travel for work and cannot choose our own hotel, I will smoke in a non-smoking hotel room if a hotel doesn't have any smoking rooms available. I open a window, burn some candles, and flush the evidence. Then on the comment card when I check out I write "room smelled a little smokey when we checked in". So that always makes me feel sneaky--it's like highschool again!

There is still smoking in the casinos here in CT. The state was trying to get the no smoking law passed there but because they are soverign nations, no dice.
I am a ex-smoker. I will never be reformed. I have told my kids not to pick up the habit. That is where I draw the line.
How can I be a hypocrite and tell others not to do something that I used to do myself?
And it is a hard drug to kick. It is as hard as heroin.
You get over the physical need in a few days but it is the brain man..the brain is the one that gets you!

I remember when you could smoke in the waiting rooms of the hospital!

My "favorite" story about smoking was when my daughter was in 2nd grade(23 now), came home and told me I was an addict. I was like "what?" My teacher says if you know someone who smokes cigarettes they're addicted to nicotine. I thought being called an addict was pretty harsh and let the teacher know it, too.
I still smoke, wish I could quit, but never have tried too hard. I feel like an outcast a lot of the time, but, obviously I guess it doesn't bother me too much!

Go to the mall, get that fake cigarette that emits smoke but is harmless. You can't even smell it. I dont know what it's called but here it's right outside Victorias Secret!!! LOL! It's interesting to me cuz I used to smoke heavy years ago but have long since quit. I think I would try that fake ciggy thing, its probably cheaper than real cigs and might add a few years to your life. I am sure I have lost some years due to my heavy smoking, even tho it was only for a few years. My kids don't smoke and I am glad. My husband does but lies about it. WTH? He smokes menthols, we used to both smoke KOOLS. My son saw his dads cigs one day in his truck and said "He smokes black people cigarettes"! Jeez....but I had to laugh.

Here in NJ you cannot smoke in restaurants either. It is always interesting when we travel to other states and people start to light up while we are eating. I'll tell you once you get used to not having smoke in restaurants, it is really annoying when you are eating and inhaling smoke. Don't know how we did it all those years (LOL). I am an ex-smoker too and I cannot stand to be around it anymore. Actually gives me a headache if we are in an enclosed room with no air circulation. My husband smokes still but does not smoke in my house. It is so funny remembering back when I smoked and had ashtrays in every room and even smoked in bed!

I don't know Pat. I think this time we will have to agree to disagree. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, but my mother and her ex-bf used to be chain smokers in our old little trailer. I was always sick. Now whenever I walk outside of one of the buildings at my college its like walking into a cloud of death. I don't personally care if ppl smoke, its your life and your money (I personally don't like supporting a corporation that murders countless ppl with their products everyday, but do what you please). I however can not stand to walk through someone else cloud of death. I developed such a severe allergy to 2nd hand smoke after my mom stopped that I instantly get a blinding, nauseating migraine. I shouldn't get sick and have to use my $5/pill imitrex because someone is not curtious to move far enough away to where I dont have to breath it.

non smokers are irritating? Wow, that is so fucked up.

Smokers are the ones ruining the lifes of other peoples, stinking up the places, making other people sick, damaging equipment.

And then those self entitled assholes complain if others don't want to endure that shit any longer?

Smokers are like your dog owning idiot neighbours.

Anonymous said...

the best thing: quitting smoking is fucking easy. Smokers are just weak willed idiots.

Anonymous said...

Smoking is like farting. If you have to pass gas, be considerate and do it away from others.
But seriously, exposure to your smoke can make other people sick. My eyes swell up and asthma kicks in if I get in contact with it. If you smoke in your apartment, your smoke can and probably will travel into your neighbors home. If you smoke in a non-smoking hotel room and the next customer is sensitive, you could be responsible for making them very very ill.
I know it's hard to accept that the habit that makes you feel so good can make people near you miserable, but that's the truth. So why not make sure you puff in a place that won't cause harm?
Oh, and to the poster who laments not being able to call people niggers, is it really such a hardship for you to not insult black people? ReallY?

Anonymous said...

"If you smoke in a non-smoking hotel room and the next customer is sensitive, you could be responsible for making them very very ill."

5:47...What an asinine comment. I have a lung disease called asthma. I didn't chose to have it and there is no cure for it. I also have very severe allergies. Smoke of any kind, be it from a fire place or a smoker, makes me very ill. It can even send me to the ER. I have a right to not be exposed to what you and I both know is poison. I have a right to eat my meal while not coughing and gagging and wheezing. I have a right to walk through a building's entrance with out coughing, gagging and wheezing, as well as wreaking of it. And yes, this includes a hotel room. I don't care what you do with your health or money but you have no right to infringe on my health. So instead of telling people who don't agree with you or hurt your feelings to go back to our plastic bubbles, why not go into your house or car and smoke all you want and keep it away from the rest of who don't want fucking black lung?

it's like "the walk of shame" to go out and smoke but I appreciate it. I dont smoke and am thankful that I dont have to inhale carcinogens from the end of someones lit up cigarette. Christopher Reeves wife died from 2nd hand smoke, she got lung cancer from being a club singer. It's serious. I never understood the "no smoking" areas in restaurants anyway. It's not like the smoke knows where to stop. Everyone can smell it. I love smoke-free eating. Thank you for going outside people. My aunt told me how she smoked in the delivery room to keep calm, whenever she had a baby, she had 6! Times have certainly changed!

I appreciate that smokers are no longer able to smoke on planes, in restaurants, in hospitals, etc. The truth is, smoking was out of control for many years. As a nurse's aide in high school, I remember everyone smoking, and going into the report room meant a room full of nurses and aides, most of them smoking, and a heavy gray/blue haze down to the 2 1/2 to 3 foot level off the floor. Later, working at my hospital, I would have to go into smokers' rooms and try to do my work with that thick smoke everywhere. Where were my rights? What about my lungs?
Smoke doesn't just hang in the air. It also clings to surfaces and clothes. If you have been around smoke, it does flake and break off your clothing and skin, and expose other people wherever you go.
Whenever we stay in a hotel, I always try to check out the room before completely booking in, as my family is sensitive to smoke, and we can usually tell right away if someone has been smoking at all in that room.
I appreciate that smokers have the right to smoke. I am not disputing that, but why should the rest of us have to be exposed?

I don't think it's an easy habit to quit most non-delusional smokers would have quit by now. Nor am I judgmental. I have no basis on which to judge such a habit. I've remained silent on this subject and it's come up before. I even understand exactly what Whoopie is saying and I'm sympathetic. The bottom line is, find a way to make sure your smoke doesn't get in my lungs and I won't care what the fuck you do with your habit.

You know it will not happen anytime in the future. Too much money to be made.
So just deal with it.

I am sorry I am being pissy about this but I have strong feelings about it.

I believe in Australia a pack is about $12 or so and i think i read online awhile ago the Govt is wanting to put the price up.
I know when my husband came over one time and he had ran out of his smokes from America, we went and got a carton and it was around $60.

Look, I would be outraged if smoking became illegal. Heck, I'm pissed off that flavored cigarettes and pot have been banned. I assume smokers are aware of the risks and either don't care or are dealing with an addiction. I just don't understand why some people feel outraged and persecuted because non-smokers don't want to be exposed to those toxins.
Then again,I'm know there are non-smokers who go out of their way to lecture and stink eye smokers who aren't being a bother. There's always the "Let me tell you" crowd who are toxic in their own way.

In Maryland, there is no smoking indoors. The bowling alley used to have a smoking room which reeked to high heaven, but at least they could be indoors , warm and dry. I must admit that I'm glad there is no smoking in bars. My eyes would burn so bad when I would go out. Then the mascara would start running in my eyes, which made it even worse. I don't like smoke around me, I think it makes your clothes, house, breath stink. BUT- I don't care if people smoke, I don't look down on them. If it's not hurting me or my kids, then more power to ya! My ding a ling mother in law used to try to light a candle and then smoke around my kids saying that the candle kills the smoke. No, I didn't let that fly.

Here in WA we have the clean bill thing too, it's been in effect for the past couple of years...while I appreciate the fact that I can go to my favorite tavern and not have the smell of nicotine cling on my hair, I also think that the 25 feet outside businesses rule is dumb. Being outside should be enough. I don't care if you smoke around me. The only one who's gonna pay for it is you in the end. All I can say is be careful and take care of your health, but in the end it's entirely up to how you wanna live your life and it's none of my business.

The one thing that keeps me from smoking is how expensive a carton is. Just like fireworks, I just don't see myself making my money go up in smoke like that when I could be using it for something really useful. Now if somebody offers..... :)

I have a friend who recently bought a house from someone who's a heavy smoker. The walls had years and years of yellow nicotine stained walls and it smelled gross. Took several days of airing and washing those walls to get rid of the smell. It was so worth it tho, the house is beautiful.

Another friend of ours is a chain smoker, and he has often fallen asleep with the butt on, burning his mattress...thankfully not himself.

Valle, I have friends who have had their newborns exposed to nicotine. Letting granma, grampa, auntie, uncle, daddy, BFF's smoke around the baby all at the same time. Things like that piss me off.

Well, I'm glad that this topic came up and that there are actually nonsmokers willing to speak up for how they feel (even if they must hide behind the anonymous tag). Having said that I'd like to say "Fuck you" to all self-righteous nonsmokers. I quit last year because I got tired of paying hefty cigarette taxes and still being treated like garbage. And to the poster who suggested Pat smoke ecigarettes, let me assure you that the nonsmoking police have nipped that in the bud too and are trying to pass laws to make those things subject to the same laws as regular cigarettes. As in, they want you to smoke those outside too. I've been around people who smoke them and there's no odor or smoke but some uptight fuckers just can't let anybody have fun.
Next year this entire town is going nonsmoking everywhere and it pisses me off. Our restaurant is one of the few in town with a smoking section in the bar and we do a brisk business from smokers. We want smokers. We actually LIKE our guests (smoking and non) and yet we have no choice in the matter.
I don't know why smokers don't band together and fight back. I read somewhere that 21% of the adult population smokes. That's a LARGE group! There are also people like me who don't smoke anymore but believe adults should have the right to smoke if they choose.
I'm so fucking TIRED of the morality police in this country. I enjoy nothing more than going to the door to seat guests, asking if they want smoking or non and seeing them recoil in horror as if I'd offered them fresh child porn. It's a real pleasure to see those assholes leave. Smokers tip better too.

DirtyDisher said...

Morality police..fuck the lot.

I sympathize with both sides on this topic. As a long-time ex-smoker, I can still recall the satisfaction I got from taking a long drag of nicotine menthol (Virginia Slims! Do they even make 'em anymore?) - the smell on my clothes, car and breath never bothered me. A cup of coffee and a smoke? - cheap paradise!
Then, I quit my pack and a half a day habit. It took a short time to get over the initial horrors of what to do with my two "ciggy-fingers" (switched to a pencil - thus birthing another irritating habit) - stopped hacking up my smoker's crud first thing in the morning, and went on to better and brighter smokeless days.
But I will admit - it took me YEARS to get over the urge to want a smoke with my cup of coffee after a restaurant dinner.
YEARS.
So, I really feel for all of those folks who smoke and those who've managed to kick it.
And what I've discovered after all these years of non-smoking?
I am totally intolerant of tobacco smoke.
The least whiff makes me feel like my lungs are closing up.
Ironic, no?

I am happy with the smoking policy in the country where I currently reside. You aren't allowed to smoke inside any public building but you are free to smoke anywhere outside. That seems pretty fair to me.

I don't understand why smokers are restricted to a designated smoking spot outside. That makes very little sense to me. I guess Europe is quite different from the US in that respect.

Dirty Disher said...

I'm happy to smoke outside away from people. But, they STILL won't leave me alone. I mean..move! They have to go out of their way to walk into it to cuss me. WTF?

Daydream Believer said...

I quit smoking a few years ago for the umpteenth time. I feel this time it is going to stick. I do think folks should be allowed to smoke outside. I just wish they would not congregate around the foyer or entrance. I hated it when I was a smoker and hate it now. It smells so stale. Not like a fresh lit smoke. Just walk a few feet from the entrance. As a matter of fact, I think they should provide benches and a big ol tub of sand for them to put them in. This way there is no litter on the floor.
Let them smoke somewhere. They are people and have as much right to smoke as you holier than thou's do not to.
Can't we all just get along?

DD I love your posts!!!

Worse than a non smoker? A smoker who just quit. Seriously they do tend to get on the soapbox like they forget quickly what it was like.
I think designated places are ok, I think its ok not in restaraunts, I can go an hour or two without one to make it a pleasant experience for all. I am all for keeping them in clubs because smoking and drinking go hand in hand. I am all for laws not smoking with small children in the car but draw the line at them telling you not to do it in your own home or in your own car at a hospital (that is not their property I don't care what they say as long as the butt stays in MY CAR!)
I am a smoker and I like to think I am understanding but there is so much that is just downright prejudice.
