California lawmakers yesterday approved a $20 million settlement with the Dugard family after police failed to find her for 18 long years.She had been kidnapped as a girl and held captive in a secret backyard by a paroled sex offender who slipped through police fingers.
"I can't emphasise enough that we've got to be much more prudent in terms of how we provide oversight for released prisoners in the state of California." Assemblyman Ted Gaines said.
The money will be used to buy the family a home, ensure privacy, pay for education, replace lost income and cover what will likely be years of therapy, said retired judge Daniel Weinstein, who acted as the mediator in the case.
In addition, much of the money will be placed in long-term investments, he said.

I'm amazed that she got anything out of this. With the budget issues in that state, and as difficult as it is to collect money in any court case, ever, this is impressive.
It is way too easy for sex offenders to just slip into the general population without further monitoring. Totally deplorable the way this guy was able to slip through authorities' fingers.
I don't get the judge's comments about what the money will be spent on, either, unless he is just somehow trying to justify the award. Not that he needs to. . .

I am quite honestly surprised that she got anything. Money certainly cannot fix what was done to her, it might help her rear her two daughters and give them a better life, it cannnot erase emotional scars.

But the congress had just voted on the unemployment extension bill and finally passed it. Too bad. (Senate gives the unemployed Americans the finger) no money for you. This is the 4th week, going into the 5th week that unemployed Americans have had zero money, if they were on an extension at all. & now people on regular unemployment benefits will no longer be able to apply for extensions. Period. So, no food, no rent, no nothing for all those people depending on that check every week. & we all know you live week to week on them. It will be the Welfare lines & Food Stamp lines for all of them next. & thats whats expensive. Because that includes much more than just a weekly paycheck. They have to include healthcare for your kids etc. So, eff the senate. Eff this gov't giving Americans the finger and going on vaca. While they eat steak & lobster on their yaghts this weekend, and unemployed Americans again have no groceries. I am going to vote in November for anyone that is NOT an incumbant. I dont care if its Kate Gosselin. Incumbants, thats when Americans will give YOU the finger!!! Americans are arming themselves for whats next. This is so serious. There will be some serious sh** that comes from this. Wall Street & big banks are riding the gravy train & America doesnt even have potatoes. Eff them all! They are ALL history in November.

You are right MissTia. It's gonna take Californians to feel a little pain before realizing that too many entitlements are costing citizens jobs, billions in city money, and an education system stretched to the limit. It will be an interesting November.

i would bet that the states with the most financial problems have an over abundance of illegal immigrants who get WELFARE...they work under the table and contribute nothing to the tax base and they get services such as food stamps, WIC, ADC, healthcare, etc....they take way more than they contribute....

I've seen estimates of as much as 40 billion dollars being transferred out of the country every year by illegal aliens. Right again about the tax base and the city services being strained.

Well, Miss Tia knows very well my position in how illegal immigration is handled. I recently got awarded my greencard after a long painful process, and it just pisses me off that these people pay enormous amounts of money to cross the border encouraging human trafficking and crime. They spend money by the thousands per person, it's ridiculous, and they don't want to get a damn tax ID and declare taxes on their own. If they did that, some of the states that are broke wouldn't be that broke. The IRS is not gonna turn them in, they want the tax money. But they want it all easy and whine and moan and cry discrimination when the law gets on their asses, I say fuck them too, they chose to come in illegally they must deal with the consequences. I hate that the citizens of this country are asked to bend over and take it in the ass just to satisfy groups that don't even care.

A new grocery store just opened right by me Shop N Save. I applied before it even opened. Yes I have experience and I'm not above working in a grocery store if it puts food on my table. Not 1 person stocking shelves in that whole store can speak a lick of English. All the cashiers are Mexican. I was in there once and won't go back.
There are about 25 factories 2 blocks over from me. Come 4PM when they empty out, not one white or black face in the masses, all hispanic.
Now my neighborhood is turning. I live in an older area of all duplexes and townhomes. They are moving in with 4 and 5 families, living in these tiny little houses. They're doing it so much that the Alderman had to send out notices stating it's illegal to do this. Nothing will be done. Suddenly my neighborhood is starting to fill up with graffiti and gang signs. It makes me sick to my stomach. If you ask me, Az isn't going far enough. This is how I feel and I don't care how PC it is. Our murder rate is through the roof and so are incidents of drunk driving and hit and run. Much of it due to illegals.
My son is a nurse in the ICU in a level 1 trauma hospital. He said every week they are filled with gunshot wounded, gang affiliated illegals. They rack up thousands of dollars in medical care that they will never pay for while they don't put a penny into our system. Something HAS to be done. Sorry this illegal situation is a real sore spot with me.
I haven't read anywhere about an uprising or a revolt happening, but it has been in my mind for some time now. I don't see how we can avoid it unless we have a major overhaul to our political and economic system, and that ain't happening. Too many people in power are comfortable.
It probably sounds silly, but this is one of the reasons that we have chickens. As long as we have a little space for them to forage, and scraps to feed them, we will have eggs, and meat, if we really need to go that far. My plan to have a guaranteed broody hen was foiled by the little bird going all rooster on me, but I still plan on working out a way to hatch my own birds, as soon as possible.

I read an article last week that said Mexican drug cartels have permanent lookouts set up in the Arizona desert. If you go anywhere near any of them, you will disappear. Disgusting. Peg, the illegal immigration issue is also a sore spot for me....I went through a long process myself and spent money that I can't afford to pay the best lawyer I could get in order to stay with my husband. And it just pisses me off how these people want to change laws that they have no right to complain about and want others to bend over to make life easier for them, thus giving those of us who are doing things right a bad rep. Fuck them. I'm with Miss Tia on that one, they should all be rounded up and put them in the same trucks they sneaked in with and be sent back and permanently banned.
