Growing by the front door

Hibiscus blooms and a red Cocks Comb came up through a volunteer Squash. I like the surprises. I get up everyday and say, well, look at that! Which is a good way to think about it when you're just too feeble to remember what's actually planted.

LOVE your flower/veg pics! Can't believe how wonderfully healthy they all look - my poor plants are coddled and they tend to look not as robust as yours.

You really have the magic touch, DD!

(I have 3 Hybrid Hibiscus plants in pots on the deck - all healthy growth, nice leaves, etc., and NOT ONE FLOWER!! On any of them!)

Beautiful flowers, DD. My hibiscus never did well here, nor did my gardenia.
Birds seed a lot of things here, but not so much as of late. Used to have holly growing up everywhere as well as little pines, astilbe, wild bleeding hearts, california poppy, etc. but not anymore. I'm not sure what made the difference.
On a sad note, my little Welsummer hen Twiggy has not been doing well for the past few weeks. I think she had been an internal layer, and we helped her rally several times, but yesterday she was doing so poorly that I had to help her out of her misery. It was truly about the hardest thing I have ever had to do, and I still wonder if I could have done more for her. She laid the prettiest dark terra cotta eggs with speckles, and she didn't pick at the others. She was a good girl. She's now in chicken heaven, where she doesn't have to lay eggs, and they never run out of sunbeams to rest in, and they never, ever run out of raisins. Rest in peace, Twigs.

My deepest sympathies on your loss Christina. Twiggy sounds like a good little hen who you gave a wonderful life. May she rest in peace in chicken heaven.

That happenes to me every summer! I love surprises. Those are just too beautiful for words. Nature is the greatest artist, the colors are the most glorious in the morning. These look like morning shots.

Cyn, I don't know a lot about them, but, they are late bloomers. I don't know that mine had any blooms the first year. Well, surely not like now, they're loaded.

DD - my hibiscus are 3 year old plants - bloomed like crazy the first year, some last year and we repotted them last fall, hoping for a great show this summer.

Good thing I didn't hold my breath waiting for them. On the other hand, my Clivias are spectacular!

My MOST favorite flower!!!! next year I am going to plant these. I used to grow huge ones in Cleveland that were a gorgeous burgandy color. Do you hang yours upside down to dry them? I did that and they lasted for 2 yrs and were simply beautiful and made me happy all winter.
