Our favorite channel has decided we need to watch more educational stuff. I guess we're all educated enough about midgets, fat people, cake and multiple births. Now there's a new show about a Mormon man who has four wives. It's like Big Love, only you know, real like. They have 13 kids between them.
It's going to start on September 26th. Want to tell me what you think? Will you watch?

in a word, NO.
I'd rather spend an hour watching the Weather Channel or a test pattern.
No flipping way! I was raised Mormon, trying to get out of that so called church. I don't want to watch that.
Uhmmmm.... no.
Enough said.

Waaaaay too weird and creepy. 4 women drinking the same kool-ade??? And don't get me started on the f.....up Mormon "religion"..hell no I'm not watching this crap.
wow....televising bigamy that is ILLEGAL....and maybe kate can make an appearance and tell 'em how to profit off their children....
One marriage is legal and the others are "commitment ceremonies"..that's how they get around it.
As a Utard myself, I fully understand why the rest of the world thinks we are nuts. This is what they see, instead of the beautiful mountains, deserts and everything else we have here... Too bad there really are MANY people who really do live this life here, and to each his own, but I wish they wouldnt put on the freak show for the world.

One more thing, the reality of being a "sister wife" is that most of the "wives" are recruited VERY young, and do not have any say in it. I cant believe they are calling this entertainment.

Hey, I'm from Utah too, and I can't imagine why they would do this other than for the $$$$.
Remember, they aren't mormons, they are their own religion with their own rules.
I will probably watch it if it doesn't interfere with any of the other shitty shows I watch. Like Jersey Shore, Housewives(any city, Kardashians, etc. If it's mindless, dumb and ridiculous, count me in. Except Gosselin, will NOT watch that crap!!
Oh, yeah, Teen Mom. Love that!!
Watch that 'cult'...nah. I don't watch anything on TLC anymore.
I feel foolish but I probably will watch it. These fundamentalist Mormons fascinate me. I'll keep watching as long as it is interesting. I didn't know this show was out there. Thanks for posting the info, DD.
My interest in the Mormon faith ended with the end of the PBS show about inside the Mormon church. It was very interesting, and there were views from people who are in the church, as well as those who have left, etc. It was very fact-oriented, and was a real eye-opener as to some of the ritual aspects of the church, and some of the stories of people who were treated badly, etc. One woman was very well educated, and spoke out about the church, I believe in an attempt to change it from within. I believe they excommunicated her, and privately, every man on the board who heard her arguments, told her she was well-spoken and they found her views interesting, etc., but excommunicated, all the same. When someone dies, within that church, the women get together and wash and clean the body to prepare it for burial. I think it's an important time of bonding and ritual for them---she was snubbed, and not allowed to participate, or mourn her close relative when a family member died. She no longer existed for them. Heartless, in my opinion.
I will not be watching this show, and I can't imagine sharing a husband. Not happening for me.
DD, I for sure WILL NOT be watching this new crapfest that The Leprosy Channel is launching. They glom onto every perverted and warped lifestyle or situation and this "Sister Wives" is no exception. After that big FLDS thing with all those kids being being taken away by CPS from their compound, one would think people would find this sort of thing offensive and just plain sick. These sister wives may not belong to the FLDS fringe faction of the Mormon church, but they are still pervs, IMO.
Not a mormon here BUT this family is NOT the mainstream mormon family - this is such a stretch to even call them mormom - it's an insult to their faith. It gives America a steroetype of religion that is beautiful in itself (if you believe that way) It's really no different than any other organized religion.. They all have their faults and you always have they "extemist" that ruin it for everyone else....I will not watch the show just as I would not watch a show exploiting Catholism, Judiasm, Islam, Baptist's.....
I'd rather gouge my eyes out than watch anything that will put money in the pocket of the Mormon church, because ten percent of any payment they receive goes directly to them, either LDS or FDLS. They both follow the same teachings of the original prophet, one just hides the fact that they do, in order to be socially acceptable.
And by the way, anon at 4:22? They follow Joseph Smith's rules, explain that one.
There are many, many religions that follow only the bible...and they hardly resemble each other.
It's the same for mormonism, splinter groups that use the same scriptures, but interpret them completely different.
Agreed to a point, but the funny thing about LDS is, they interpreted the scripture the same as the FDLS until the government stepped in and told them to stop the polygamy or face the consequences. That's why the FLDS believe THEY are the true followers, they didn't cave to the political pressure. LDS is just a business with some nice ideas about family and healthy living.
Hey, the FLDS practice polygamy openly here in Utah, and I guess the regular Mormons could too if they wanted to...but it just isn't done anymore, and hasn't been for over a hundred years. End of story.
The law can't do anything unless it's for welfare fraud (claiming more children than one's own), child abuse (under age marriage), bigamy (if they are dumb enough to try to marry more than one person at a time).
I'm new to Utah, and was shocked that there's actually no law here in the USA against polygamy as long as the second, third etc wives just live "common law". They usually home school their children and stay to themselves more often than mixing with the rest of the neighborhood. Good people, well mannered children, just odd marriage practices.
I personally know them, and they're doing to let people know what its really about theres a lot of opinions and stigmas that are not true. They're trying to let people in to understand their lifestyle.
I am MORMON, and this group is NOT. They are Fundamentalist. MORMONs do NOT practice polygamy!
Also, for those people that are referring to the Texas compoud and the raid. This is a different group of polygamists. They do have different "sects". In this one they do not beleive in under age marriages or arranged marriages. They really get to date who they want, etc, and aren't "thrown out and forgotten" if they decide to live differently.
TLC has gone overboard with these programs.
Multiple wives are no big deal in my parent's country (Pakistan) so it doesn't shock me into wanting to watch this new program.
I have 3 uncles who have two wives each. The second wives are money hungry home wreckers. Maybe the wives on the TLC program are different.
N.
ps - It is embrassing to have such people in my family.
I for one am very excited about this show.
I am a second wife in a polygamous relationship and I have hopes that "Sister Wives" will help generate a positive outlook on polygamy. It seems we see WAY too much of the 'bad polygamy' in the media and not enough of the good. And it really can be good! It might not be for everyone, but monogamy isn't for everyone either. Plural marriage is a lifestyle choice...simply stated.
As for my own family, we are a bit different. We do not live in Utah, we are not religiously motivated, and we do not have 21 children. We are just two happily married women who happened to be married to the same man. The love, honesty, and freedom that we experience as a group is something that should not be looked down upon or shunned by those who don't understand. So much hatred out there...when all we are about is love.
I hope that 'Sister Wives' can illustrate the great things that can come of a plural relationship. We are happy, and we are happy to see a family willing to step out of the 'poly shadows' and share their story.
My family has a blog if you would like to read about us and our journey.

Okay, Anon 2:55 riddle me this: You marry your first wife and you are sealed. You divorce her and marry another, sealed to her as well. You all die. How many wives do you have in the celestial kingdom? Providing of course, that you've been deemed worthy to be there, temple recommend, paying your tithing, etc. You have TWO wives in the celestial kingdom. You may not have an active marriage to both on earth, but you sure as hell have multiples there, do you not? And isn't being in the celestial kingdom the grand reward? Isn't that what you sell to the poor people that don't know any better, family forever? You're splitting hairs, my friend.
Okay, everyone, this is from an LDS guy who joined the church while serving his country in the Air Force while in Germany. It is the ONLY church that could answer questions I had. None of the Christian churches had the answers. Everyone seems bent on hammering LDS over polygamy, but not seem to have a problem with old testament prophest, called by God that had more than one wife. What gives? Christians, Jews and Muslims all agree that Abraham was called of God, yet he had two wives, Sariah and Haagar. Oops! Not one person I have asked so far knows why God ordains polygamy for specific periods of time and for what reason (to raise righteous seed). So either God did ordain it in the old testament or he did not. So if polygamy was ordained of God in the old testament, and you view the old testament as scripture, then you must agree that, at least the priciple is correct, just not lived anymore. The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have not lived this law for over 100 years. It's purpose was completed and they disbanded the practice. But, if "congress shall make no law pertaining to religion" then what gives the congress the right to outlaw polygamy from adults who want to practice it and raise loving family. I admit, I wouldn't do it, but then again seems same sex marriage is being embraced by mainstream society. So, I can see the day where the "polygamy law" might be overturned. And while we're at it, why can't a woman have several husbands? Hmmm?
