there was guy that lived in our little town when I was in high school. He had a big red fro. This was about 1971. Everybody called him "nigger"...i think they still do. His name was Steve. I could never call him nigger. He remids me of Hyde on That 70's. He was cool like that. He was so cool, being called nigger didn't even bother him, in a town full of the KKK!!!

How about back in the 60's when you went to the drug store & ordered penny candy and ordered those little delicious "nigger babies"...thats what they were called. Now they are called "black babies" or "licorice babies". But I was like 4 or 5, we didn't know. Thats all we knew to call them. gawd, how awful was that? Anybody that was little back then knows what candy I am talking about & you know you called them that too. How can we redeem ourselves for that? That is a owrd thats just not said anymore tho. It's a hick word. Like someone that never went to school says it.

My mom, who grew up in Ireland told me it was not uncommon to name a black dog Nigger. Her dog was named Spot. I guess they just weren't very creative in Ireland back in the day.

The other day at the Drive-Thru window my beverage maker handed me a customer's coffee and said "black" (no cream, no sugar) so I would know which order on the monitor it belonged to and which person to hand it out to.
As a joke, I said; "hey, it's African American now, be politically correct" and we laughed. Then I started to feel uncomfortable, like I said something extremely non-PC by making a joke about being aware and PC and I apologized and said I didn't mean anything by it and I hope nobody would think I was demeaning anyone and don't anyone start calling it that blah blah. Kinda sad.
Actually, I don't know about the candies you had when you were young, Rox. I was born in the late 50's, and got my share of penny candy at Thrifty Drugs, but don't remember anything like what you were describing. Maybe it was a regional thing.

The repeated attempts to be PC by changing labels makes my head hurt. Mentally Retarded, Developmentally Disabled, Differently Abled, Mentally Challenged, etc. it's to the point where it's difficult to express what I need to say, at times. I am speaking as in a professional sense. When someone with diminished mental capabilities has a baby, there has to be a way to refer to their mental state without getting someone's balls in an uproar.
The re-labeling thing has taken over in our hospital in general, too. X-ray became radiology which became diagnostic imaging which became computerized radiography. Admitting became access services. Cafeteria became dietary which became nutritional services. We have a labeling disease in this country. When I need to contact one of our other services, I really have to work at remembering exactly which name they are now under, and often it takes several tries.
Sorry I hijacked this thread, but it's one of my pet peeves.
it was one of george carlin's pet peeves too....he wrote (and did bits on stage) about euphemisms and how the language keeps getting watered down.....

I'm no Reggie fan; but he earned the Heisman while at USC. The money he got he used to help his family, and it wasn't even that much money anyway, and he was getting wooed to leave USC; not stay.
