HERE for details, but, basically a group of SEVEN!, very smart Chimps escaped their enclosure at the KC Zoo and the zoo was full of people at the time. No one was hurt because the employees led the visitors to safety in locked secure areas until all the Chimps were lured back and the danger was over. Ironic, that the people ended up in cages and the chimps roamed free for an hour and a half. The people were compensated with free passes. Yeah, come on back, maybe the Lions will escape next time.
It's not that interesting, but, it terrified me. Yeah, me, the crazy chick who adopted an abused Black Bear. (Who was actually brown and huge and looked like a Grizzly.) But, Chimps scare the living shit out of me. If it had been Gorilla's or any other ape or monkey, I would have strolled calmly to where ever staff directed me. But, Chimps? Oh, fuck no. I would have grabbed my kids, any weapon-ish thing I could find and ran, shaking like a crack whore in church. Chimps terrify me.

BTW, zoos confuse me. I am not convinced apes, monkeys and elephants should be in zoos. They seem to close to being human. At least the KC zoo is a nice place. I've been there several times.
Instead of animals, zoos should feature down and out celebrities. Gary Busey would gladly sit there being stared at for 12 hours a day in exchange for food and drugs.
I'd pay two dollars to see him. I kind of like him. Would he take food stamps?
Chimps scare me too, something about having ones face ripped off...
If any chimp ripped off a face of a human, it was because the human had no right to try and make a pet out of an intelligent animal that should BE LIVING IN THE WILD. Upset the balance and animals react. Zoos are disgusting. San Diego Wild Animal Park is an exception because it's grounds are replications of the animal's natural turf. They bring back nearly extinct species (stupid, greedy humans again) and help animals in peril.
Lisa, no shit. The damage they inflict when they go bad is worse than any horror movie.
Mary X 2, I think I tend to agree with you. Zoos should be held more accountable. Animals are not slaves.
