A new Kate Middleton portrait

Tom Sutton Smith gave the royal couple a new portrait of Kate. William wants to hang it in their room. THIS article where I found it is really mean about it, but, I like it. Portraits are tough because, for an artist, it's easy to capture the face and make it look like someone, but, it's difficult to get that spark that makes them special. I think the eyes here are dead on and I like that the whole thing is..painterly. I think the author of that article is an art critic who can't paint shit. That is a good portrait. It's interesting to look at, it pulls your eyes around and the movements and colors are pretty incredible. A little mean around the mouth, but, I'd overlook that for the rest of it. Anyway, if William and Kate like it, then what's the problem? It's their house it will be hanging in. You can take that fancy, silky smooth royal portrait and shove it, in my opinion, it's boring. Shit like that hangs all over their castles. Yawn.

See? Who needs more of this crap when we have cameras now? It's just the artist showing off technical skills. I think tech skills are only important in the learning stage of art, mastering them helps you expand later. Now that we have cameras we get these kinds of images all the time. So, who needs it? They aren't Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn fer cripesakes. She looks like a Breck Girl.

Sidetracked now..I know some of you remember the Breck Shampoo Girls. There's were hundreds of images, all the same and perfect. But, they weren't real. So you could never be like them no matter how much shampoo you bought. Gag.

It ages her beyond her years. Especially around the mouth. It's not flattering. But it isn't the worst I have seen. She will look like that in about 10-15 yrs anyway.

OMG! The Breck girls. Amazing beauties. And that was back when shampoo came in a square glass bottle. Real safe in the tub. And conditioner was called cream rinse and you had to dilute it with water. I used to call fabric softener cream rinse when I was young. Same thing! The bottles were so beautiful. And you dried off with the striped towel your mom got in her box of Duz.

You hit the nail on the head, fellow artiste. A technically proficient artist is fine and things look spot on, but sterile - an intuitive artist can put feeling and movement and MOOD into their paintings.

Rox, yes yes YES! I remember all that, even the towels. I remember dishes that came in detergent boxes. Oh my. I wish they still did that.

Mary, I knew you'd understand. I love the brush strokes. I just do.

I've never seen her look like either portrait in any of her photos-that's why no one likes them.
And this one has elongated her cheek and chin and connected them with a line that is unlike the real smile lines she has there.
