Tooney was out by himself last night. He stayed in the yard and banged on the door, to be let in, around midnight. Maybe I should just start letting him run around late at night? He doesn't like to get too far from me. Last night he was by himself out there for over two hours. I kept checking on him. It's safer for him when it's dark and most people are asleep, dogs are locked up and traffic is almost nonexistent. I am rethinking this release. Maybe he can hang around here where I can keep track of him for awhile. It's not like he's the only one we have here. Look at him in that last picture. He walked right up to the neighbor and said hello. That's crazy. How can I release him when he does things like that? I'm afraid he'd just go look for people. Man, I don't know. But, Coons are all individuals, maybe he won't become a problem. You think? I could always take him somewhere if he started be a problem. Beats me. But, he just doesn't seem to want to grow up and be by himself yet. He's still such a baby.

Raccoon antics

I don't know anything about rehabilitation of raccoons, but I have to believe that if one just walked up to someone in the middle of the day, it's going to get shot. Keeping him around for a bit might be better for him. Maybe not better for you if he does get bitey, though.
Yeah, I've raised tons of them, but, this one is the first in town. I had to raise him much closer to me. I just don't know, but, I can't let him loose somewhere when he's such a baby. Another few weeks should tell me more about him. Right now, releasing him would be just like if you took your dog or cat and put him out in the country. And left. Oh, man, panic time.
He can't just be walking up to people. Really bad.
Went to doc. Got chest X-ray that looked better than the lungs sounded. So am getting refills of all my pain stuff and some patches plus antibiotics and steroids. And inhalers. The neighbor will go to the drug store. I am too weak to do that. But I should perk up again. I lost weight, 90 lbs now. I wear not depends but the child size overnight pants. They have them for kids who might wet bed who weigh up to 120 lobs. They help if I cough and something comes out. Mikey watching tv all day, nat geo wild, where her sees all the lions and tigers and wild dogs, and hyenas, oh my. Too hot to be outside.
Is neutering him and keeping him as an indoor/ outdoor pet an option? They're orphaned all the time I'm sure- but you're all he's known and he's so sweet. Can they ever be kept as pets?
Border, I'm glad the doc filled your scrips. That's always a relief when you're sick and in pain. It's one big thing not to worry about. 90 pounds is really little. Man, you need to just take it easy, do as little as possible, take your meds and rest up. I hope you have groceries in the house or someone to help you out. Get well.
Shelly, of all the Coons I've raised, only one other could have been a pet. He just never developed testes and never got mean. I don't know any vets who would neuter a Coon. I've never known a neutered Raccoon. I just don't know about the pet thing. Just about everyone here has a 'pet' coon story, but, they mean a Summer pet. Not forever. I'll just have to wait and see, I guess. Seems like he should be about ready to go, but, he's nowhere near it really. He still wants his mommy and he likes people. Which I never encouraged. He hasn't been around a lot of people. I wish I could keep him forever, but, that creates all kinds of new problems. I'd need a serious enclosure. Fuck, I just don't know. All I know, is, he isn't ready to leave me.
Aww, he is so sweet. I just could not let him go. At least until he tore my ass up and then maybe I could. I was thinking about those old houses you and your friend used to explore. Maybe when the time comes, he can be let loose in one of those.
Off topic (again)---I know how you like to look at houses. I've been looking at pics of the Sowden House in Los Angeles. It is a Frank Lloyd Wright house built in 1926. It's huge and real old Hollywood. It was also owned by George Odell for a while. He is thought to be the person who killed the Black Dahlia. But the house is spectacular.
Sorry, I was wrong. It was a Lloyd Wright house---Frank's son. It's still fabulous.
I think he'd go out of his mind with loneliness once released. Maybe a very gradual transition would be best. I wonder if he will ever actually want to leave completely. He's a doll, btw
Jane, have you ever read FLW's life story? It's pretty bad ass and tragic. The houses are involved.
Gradual, yes. He went out again last night, but, he only stayed out about half an hour. Then he came banging at the door.
But, Raccoons are supposed to be solitary.
Pat, I will look for that book. I love his houses. But that Sowden House was really something and all the plants really made it exotic looking. It's sometimes called the Jaws House because the Mayan influence looks like the mouth of a shark. I just like to imagine the Hollywood parties that were given there back when stars were stars.
As for Tooney, I know regular coons like to be loners, but do you really consider him a regular coon?
"Can't we keep him ma? Please! Please!"
what about that baby cat?
